.....the urges to pass the buck,

the easy way out...

This seems like directed to those who keep saying Canon should use Exmor, Toshiba or Panasonic sensor. :)

A teaser. Only about 20 hours to go. What do you think?

Haloween edition cameras. Lifting shadows reveals dead people.

In all seriousness I dont think it is a printer, why take out a NYT ad for that. It is one industry even less mainstream than photography. I don't think it is a photo competition, the last India teaser was obviously worded as a photo competition (i.e. get ready to get your camera out).

People believe that no big announcement would come out for the US prior to Japan, but on the otherhand why not...Japan is not such a massive market for big cameras. No word on rumor sites but they honestly have not been on the ball with anything Canon related recently except for hours prior to a real release. If anything it might make sense to release something that does not involve having to stand out against other manufactures at Photokina, etc.

Canon did debut the 1DX at Photoplus in NY in 2011...also remember the forum member that said he just got off the phone and mentioned a photoplus debut...you all thought he was crazy! What now?

I agree. It seems like a camera announcement to me. I am thinking of Canon CEO's interview with DPR. He did mention about announcement of high MP camera and new mirrorless coming soon. Maybe that's what we will see.

I could eat my words, and I really hope I do. I'd love to see a big MP camera, but I don't think Canon's teaser is going to have anything at all to do with photography, in any way whatsoever.

I think that way because the newspaper ad from Canon is obviously targeted to a general audience. A mass audience isn't going to pay big dollars for a large MP camera, even if its price is comparable to the Nikon D810. And a sensor update for a camera like the Rebel isn't worth the advertising cost. As well, lenses and printers would be of zero interest to the general population.

Canon is involved in far more technology than cameras and lenses, and a number of their products not related to photography would certainly interest an American audience. Yes, I'm aware that all companies have a tendency to misjudge the importance of their products, so far as mass interest is concerned, and so I won't be shocked if Canon does indeed announce a photographic product that the general public has little interest in. But I don't think that's going to happen. I have a strong feeling that Canon will announce something relating to 4k display, and that's something that might perk more than a few ears up.

If I'm wrong, I've eaten shoe leather before.

Yeah, the NYT ad points to something for the mass. On the other hand the message itself points more to photography related products than anything else. See the words such as 'critics', 'cynics', 'so called experts', 'pessimist' etc. These are all known entities in photography related forums, blogs and magazines only and have nothing to do with mass.

So, my feeling is that if they indeed announce cameras/lenses they don't necessarily want mass to buy them, they just want mass to be aware that Canon has made some breakthrough in cameras and this will promote the brand and will help their mass targeted cameras.

Less than a day to know. :)

Has to at least be a new never before used sensor by canon.

The Powershot N2 in graffiti colors!

You thought it was impossible, but we did it!

Order your Louis Vutton bag with it in matching colors for $2999.

Impossible! Gim-mossible!

It'll end up being another lame-over.

If they launch a marketing run like this...and it is just another lame over...they are done.

The strongest tie in to their 'see impossible' slogan would be the 5 layer foveon like stack that takes in both UV and IR light.

http://www.imaging-resource.com/new...-five-layer-sensor-with-uv-and-ir-sensitivity

Canon which already has a good reputation for skin tones is pushing the envelop further in that direction. And I would also imagine a UV/IR sensitive stack has interesting possibilities in astrophotography, and probably the best possible CA corrections possible (i.e. purple fringe for example is CA off of mainly UV light I believe). And of course the color stack means far greater color resolution.

Given the strange marketing push and slogan I am almost convinced its the fruition of the UV/IR sensitive sensor stack...

My second guess for the slogan would be an EVF/OVF hybrid, but IMO that slogan doesn't fit nearly as well...as seeing UV/IR to the human eye is truly impossible...and seeing an EVF/OVF hybrid is just a neat idea but not really 'impossible'.

The weird cube logo could also be a representation of light being absorbed by different stacks of the sensor.

It can also somewhat validate DPP 4's lack of backward compatibility (i.e. here are the traditional sensors we will support, but DPP4 will mainly be for supporting the 5 layer RAW conversion that will not be supported by 3rd parties for some time, etc).

It definitely needs to be worth of such fan fare.

Makes sense, although 'see impossible' can be interpreted in many ways.

And I am not too sure that minimizing wrinkles is a good idea (improving tone is), after all in people with wrinkle you want to capture it as it adds to the 'character' of the subject. Maybe studio photographers have a different take on it.
