the answer to 1 it would seem - everytime you install firmware

Have a look at these - same lens, same standard settings JPG fine - the lighting changed (the sun came out) but have a look at them AND the chimneys in the Middle - the lens is as sharp at f5.6 as it was at f8 BEFORE the reset !!!

Unscientific maybe, but the camera was routinely taking SOFT photos after the firmware update - now I've reset it , it's back to its normal sharp (OK sharp by 10D standards) self again ....

Ignore any colour / contrast differences as the lighting changed - BUT the camera is a good one which focusses correctly

The second time to Canon they determined my finger wasnt sitting on
the shutter button right....so they attached a new finger ;^)
A two times defective and angry user.
I wish this 'good catch' could wait until tomorrow. Hate to see
'Canon broke my camera with firmware upgrade' threads. Why don't
you all wait one more day, even less than that? You will have a
list of issues fixed and detailed instructions on how to install
it. If you don't do it rigth, you may need to send it to Canon for
a fix. It will be at least a month, since all service senters are
already flooded by defective users.

My 10D has worked fine (to me at least) since day 1. No "softness" issue. Did try "reset" out of curiosity, nothing changed.

I have just upgraded the fireware too. Images as sharp as before even without a "reset".
I'd sure like to hear Canon's explanation of this phenomenon.
I'm sure that Pekka or someone actually proved it with before /
after shots when it was initially mentioned and it seems to have
worked again, if it hadn't my 10D would have been back to Canon as
the first shots were rather soft! . it's just fine again now :)
No, not me. For my first 10D reset had no effect at all and I have
not done it on the new one yet because everything works. Now we
have one question left: what does the reset do for GOOD cameras? :)

Mine is a good one Pekka, it never did focus incorrectly, what it does is sharpen up the image in standard mode, my 10D is sharper on standard settings than my D60 was !!! ..

Have a look at the crops in reply to David - the "before" ones are similar to how the camera performed out of the box (they're all unmodified) and the after ones are like when I did the reset the first time it was mentioned - last time I forgot to keep the old shots, this time I DID and have sort of proof that it works

Sorry , I thought it was you who did comparison tests..

If it happens gradually then only explanation is firmware bug
which does e.g. rounding errors in internal settings which in time
become visible in picture (for example there is a lens table in it,
if it has self-adjust code which is buggy then there it is). Most
likely this bug happens only when you have certain camera settings
selected, or certain lens connected.

Something seems to be drifting so your explanation sounds likely. Hard to guess what they really did at Canon but as a former system engineer I know very strange things take place almost daily when folks are designing and building electronics. Usually the really weird stuff happens as fixes and work arounds when they find last minute bugs or problems after they have committed to a release date either internally or publicly. Most things done to put out a fire seem to have unintended consequences.

Are you sure? You are saying what everyone wants to hear. Tell me more please. You can even lie.
To me it seems (almost definite) that the pics are less soft than
before and it doesn't has much blown highlights anymore.

as it happens the lasty time I did it and noticed a difference, it was the 28-135IS I had on as it's the main lens for that camera NOW and before it was the only lens at had because the Ls were at work on the D60..

file size too. After the firmware update i could only get 247 images in large jpeg fine on my 1 GB MD. I kept formatting the card and messing with it. After clearing all settings I'm now back to 425! wierd.
I took some test shots (with the 28-135IS) and despite beibng
focussed correctly they looked a bit on the soft side so I did the
reset (Clear settings) thing for both and it seems to have
sharpened back up again ..

It may seem like snake oil but something worth noting before all
the posts of "My 10D is soft after the formware update" come
flooding in..

I know what kind of soft pictures my 10D produced, now with the same lens they are sharper and i took some pics with heavy backlight and it doesn't produce that much blown highlights anymore , i even set my cam to normal exposure against the half stop underexposure i used to use.

I have never installed any Canon software or connected the 10D to my PC, i always use CF Card reader to copy the picture to my PC.

Do I have to install the canon software first (according to the instruction on the uploadfirmware e), or I can just use the card read to copy the 10DV101.fir, and insert the CF card to 10d and upgrade? Anyone knows?
You have to run the exe and unpack it first, then copy all files to
card.
