I still use version X2 but have wanted to upgrade. However, the newer versions have an adjust window and an edit window........why do they make it so difficult? You have to save an image if you want to do both.

Someone please explain or is it easier than I think it is?

Actually the later versions have THREE workspaces, "Manage" which is a file browser, "Adjust" which is a simple editor with pre-sets, and finally "Edit" which is the full editor where you can do more advanced editing plus everything you can do in "Adjust."
As you say, over complicated and unnecessary, why have "Adjust" and "Edit" which can both do the same thing?
A simple file browser and full editor would be a lot better in my opinion, and I have never even used "Adjust" in my X5 edition.
Some of the cloning , healing and scratch removal tools are pretty useful and I tend to use them on scanned images, but for raw development and general photographic editing I use Lightroom these days.

For some people full edit mode may be too overwhelming at beging. So for them (but not also) was created Adjust mode which provide only basic operation which are commonly used for simple editing.

If you do not like to use adjust go directly to Edit mode.

Strange animals aren't we? We complain if we don't get enough features and complain when we get too many!!!

Go to 'Preferences'. Find the option to open on Edit. Then forget all about having more tools than you need.

regards

have had many PSP versions over the years.. currently have X6.. just use the Edit mode it's all you'll need

I'm using PSP 6. I have it set to go directly to edit.
Doesn't alter the fact that there are two other, largely unnecessary, modes.
If you are trying to produce a product that will offer a complete photo production environment, You need SOME sort of file manager. It's there. If you are a beginner, and intimidated by the full fledged editor but STILL want to to simple touch up edits, the "Adjust" tab is there and available for use.

There is also a raw converter utility and an HDR utility. If you don't like THEM, don't USE them!

This is the oddest thread I've seen in a while. Corel has made it pretty easy to avoid the tabs you don't want to use. So don't use 'em. Seems like a no brainer to me.

I just bought the upgrade to PSP X7 Ultimate. I'm not sure about all the new features as I haven't had a chance to really use them yet, but have dabbled with Face Filter 3 (not as easy to use as Portrait Professional). The Clear thingy might be OK, too, but haven't really tried it.

I always open in Edit. For file management, I just use Windows Explorer--easy to drag & drop and create files for edited shots. I tried the Manage function when it first appeared (was that version X5 or X3?) but for my workflow, Windows Explorer just seemed easier.

If I'm just working with a couple of RAW files, I'll use PSP. But it's too slow compared to Lightroom 5 to handle 200 files from a single shoot, and LR allows a much greater range of adjustments to the RAW files before I export to JPG. But the re-touch work is always a PSP job. It's blemish tool, scratch removal, basic skin smoothing, noise control, and most importantly, it's sharpening tools are really quite useful. It clones well, too. Moreover, I like using it's resizing tool for web posting (and the accompanying jpg optimizer to squish the file size).
