The Watchtower stands at the eastern end of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. From a distance the building's silhouette looks like the Anasazi watchtower it was meant to mimic. In plan the structure is composed of one enormous circle at the north, a small circle at the south, and gently arched forms connecting the two. As Virginia L. Grattan wrote in Mary Colter Builder Upon the Red Earth, "The Indian watchtower at Desert View was not a copy, but what Colter called a 're-creation' of an Indian watchtower." Standing at 70 feet, with a 30-foot base, the tower was unique in having a concrete foundation and a steel framework well hidden in the stones of the tower. The ground level of the tower was a large, round observation room with a spectacular view of the Grand Canyon. Upstairs the Hopi Room presents paintings by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie, who took the room's theme from the Hopi Snake Dance. An outdoor observation deck is directly above the observation room.

Very nice Dan. I was just at the Watchtower in December and it was gorgeous with the snow and dark clouds. It is worth a trip back if you have the opportunity.

Nice work!!! Thanks for shering. I am just starting with video. Your work in part as well as ownership of RX100mk3 inspires me to get into it. Your advice on PP technique and software used would be greatly appreciated. May I ask what video quality and format it was shot with and how was the final conversion done before uploading to Vimeo? Have you done any grading? Was the time laps done with the Sony App? Thanks in advance. I need to start somewhere I suppose :-)
Many thanks for watching.

Shot XAVC 1080/60p. Edited with FCPX. No grading, only minor exposure adjustment on 5 clips. Uploaded to Vimeo at 1030/29.97. Sony Time-lapse App.

Good shooting...

Great video. Just curious, what settings did you use? Was it landscape? What level of saturation, contrast, and sharpness? I didn't see a single portion with blown highlights... very impressive.

.

That is a fabulous video !

This really got me going because I will be walking these same steps in 3 weeks.

thanks Dan !

The clips are very nice however I find the editing too snappy with no transitions probably this is deliberate but to me a bit hard
Have you considered shooting 30p to increase the dynamic range of the shots even more? You have near to no panning and render in 30p anyway so there is no point loosing information to more frames?

With the time-lapse app, what kind of files is the camera generating? Also mp4-files like when shooting video? Thanks!

Unfortunately, RX100M3 XAVC 30p suffers serious moire issues and shooting 30p doesn't increase dynamic range. Also, shooting 60p allows the use of the extra frames for slow-mo, etc.. if I need them.

Thanks for watching and commenting.
