So for a bit of fun .... maybe, here's a RAW of a Kingfisher shot taken with the NEX-7 and the Canon FD 500 F/4.5L.

www.birdsinaction.com/DSC04589.zip

Be interesting to see what you do with it. Its in a zip file and anything goes with how you decide to process it with whatever you choose. Crop it, boost it, whatever you want.

So just for a bit of fun and a break. Of course, most might not be interested, but its worth a try for a change in here.

All the best.

Danny.

Danny,

What a wonderful opportunity!

I have never even seen one of these (except through you) and now we can "play" with one . . .

Wonderful!

Here is a very quick try.

Now, why does mine not look as good as yours??

Thanks for a great idea to liven things up!

Jack

Gees Jack, never even thought about a vertical mate, very clever and love it. Colour and exposure wise, we are very similar Jack, so close it hurts ;-) I've gone with horizontal, but cloned a few bits out I didn't like...... you know which bits :-) I also made the eye a little lighter, hey I'm a cheat. You've caught the feathering really well Jack.

I was wondering what people would come up with and this is great to see Jack, really like the vertical for a change. Funny how we see differently, I like it. I'll post my version later on if people get a little more into it.

All the best Jack and that V2 / V3 is looking good, I've been watching.

Great idea. Thanks for letting us try :-)

Here is my take.

Thanks Danny. Since Jack took the vertical, I'll try a square.

That Canon lens just makes me want to cry everytime I see something from it.

Think its hard to PP wildlife without knowing what it looks like in real life. You run the risk of over processing it or making it look unnatural. But here's my try:

Focus on what you have, not on what you don't.

I know what you mean, but tell you what, you nailed it ;-) Exactly what they look like in the colour department. Its the size I don't think a lot realise, these are the same size as a Sparrow, a little bigger than a Swallow but not by much.

All the best and thanks, that is the correct colours, very nice.

Real afternoon glow going on. I do have a few shots pretty much like this with low angle sun later in the afternoon. Boney a guy I shoot with, gives that glow to nearly every shot he takes.

All the best thanks for that. great to see and fun IMO.

Its a pretty sharp lens, but without the sensor I wouldn't be using Sony ;-) Sony knows how to squeeze a sensor for sure and the lenses tend to show it well. What I like about the 300 and 500mm is no CA, I've never seen any, I have from the 800mm though but its easily fixed. So it must be the fluorite front element that does it.

I tend to boost contrast a little with the Raw's, maybe a little too much in reality. Nicely done and a darn good crop with the square look. It works well. I'm surprised with the crops in here, some I would never have thought of, so I'm learning a lot to be honest.

All the best and thanks for giving it a go, I like it.

I'm liking the verticals in here Mike. Its not a way my head will work half the time, so this is great to see. Very nicely done and very natural.

All the best Mike and thanks for the time. We should have a few more of these from different people. Love seeing what others come up with.

These "do my RAW" threads are always interesting to see how others see. Thanks for the look at a FD 500L.

In b4 someone gives it a cigar, laser eyes, and a sniper rifle.

I have the FD 80-200L and did some test shots just recently. The lack of CA wide open is bloody wowing. Give me fluorite, give me lead! And give me whatever else they put in those old, longer FD L lenses.

I like the branches, so I didn't crop too much. I also like the warm color, so I didn't cool it down much either.

you capture so much flipping detail. This starts to get into the territory of "heavy crop"

They're small, but every now and again I'll make up a set of notecards with 5 x 3/12 images on an appropriate matte. These have enough structure to hold up.

Jack,

if you took the same image with your V3 - 70-300mm do you think your crop would hold up for an 8 1/2 x 11 print? If it would, my A77-Minolta 400mm would probably be on its way to a new home on Monday.

I've tried to keep colours natural using my 500L and NEX-7 colour profile in sunlight.

D Williams,

Now that is a tough question.

My first reaction is:

1. From a MP point of view it would be close. Danny's 24MP file at equiv 750mm with the APS-C sensor was a 5.9 MP image after cropping (or a little over 1500mm equiv). A V3 18MP file with the CX sensor shot at 810mm would be around 5.2 MP to get to the 1500mm equiv. My guess is both files would print very well at 8x10.

2. But only in very good light! Danny's shot was at ISO100 and the best the V3 could do would be ISO 160. And the APS-C sensor has far less noise than the CX. On a cloudy day, the ISO difference would show up and the Nex 7 file would print better for sure.

3. The other factor is the focus issue. Danny's MF technique is unique and extraordinary. Trying to match that with an AF system is a challenge. The Nikon 1, from what we have seen in our recent tests with the V2/V3, would outperform the A77 AF system (we had one for a couple weeks prior to the A77m2 release). We then had a A77m2 for a brief time and my sense is that it may very well be a better AF for BIF than the N1. If you couple your slightly faster Minolta 400mm (f4.5) with the A77m2, you may well have a better birding setup for AF than the V3/70-300CX (f5.6). We were going that route until the size/weight issue "pulled us back to earth".

Looking at your gear list, I would seriously think about renting a N1 system for a week or two before selling anything!

Interesting question, for sure!

Good luck . . .

Jack
