DPReview user-created article retirement

I'm very disappointed that user-created articles are being killed off. It's a very important part of what I do here, and this will force me to set up an external site to retain the content I have created.

DPReview, please reconsider this decision.

If you want user-created articles to stay, add you voice here.
I've read all the responses in this thread. I think change is needed to keep the dpr site interesting and in line with demand.

However I think a way for forum regulars and mods to have articles or sticky posts that can be endlessly edited is an important factor to help build and support the community.

Taking away the good and great articles from their respective owners (as I understand it) and make them 'official' takes away their repeated and constant efforts to update and maintain the articles. In the case of Wilba's FAQ it has grown considerably over the months adding new stuff with newer cameras and technologies covered. If DPR takes over, will these be equally maintained, is your staff capable and knowledgeable, and more importantly do they have the time to maintain them? Why not add a select few like moderators and regulars the opportunity to maintain a forum/subject specific article/sticky post for them to update regularly without having to repost every week? A select few to prevent the spam and nonsense posts.

Another way would be the wikipedia way of collaboration and review, a way for the community to self regulate, like you did with moderators in their respective forums. If a writer of the article abandons his/her article another author could take over, maybe by vote of the community or by permission of a moderator.

Something like:
  1. User prepares article/propose sticky thread for review. Remove 5000+ character limit, upgrade to 1MB or something for longer articles.
  2. Moderator gets a message stating an article/sticky is requesting a review
  3. Moderator reads article and clears/denies posting the article filtering all the nonsense. DPR provides guidelines to which user articles must adhere to. Borderline cases can be discussed in moderator forum.
  4. In the case of a sticky post, the moderator could be granted the power to assign a user to the article/post to maintain it, or reassign someone else to take over abandoned articles/posts/threads.
  5. Moderator is empowered to delete abandoned and/or articles that lost their relevance.
Invest now in an infrastructure and reap the benefits of volunteers doing what they love best! We all benefit :)

Otherwise I think this site has been at its peak lately, it's fast, accessible and love the interface/editors/image viewers, inserting images in a very user friendly way etc. Gear lists, lens reviews, challenges, user reviews, man you haven't been sitting idle! It was a huge effort to build all that and I appreciate it very much!

The OP went top a tremendous amount of effort for no compensation to provide an FAQ for beginning users of Rebel DSLRs. This FAQ is frequently referenced in the Rebel forum and is a valuable resource. IMO it would make more sense to keep it as a "sticky" post in front of the the forum.
It will be turned into an official DPR article and will get better visibility, as well as still being featured in the forums.
I have the same concern as imqqmi - the beating heart of my FAQ is the updates I make, responding to new questions, insights, and resources. If it becomes an official DPR article, can I continue to edit it?

I also like his idea of some sort of submission and review process, which would weed out inappropriate content. If there's a volunteer "article moderator" job going, let me know. :-)

and I've been on this site regularly for almost 3 years
I've been here 13 years and I never heard of USER articles. There is something called ARTICLES. Is that what he means?
It was introduced in October '11 in a news item on the front page (Site updates: Gear List, forum articles and more). An "Articles" item appeared in the toolbar of your profile, and "user-created articles" appeared under the "Articles" item in the main toolbar that appears on all pages.

Simon,
I put a lot of effort into my article as well, and I was about to begin another. I had hoped that it would be an appreciated contribution to your site.

If spam prevention is the issue, why not just restrict these articles to users with over 500 posts and one year of membership?

The only thing I would add is that there should be a way of tracking traffic on the sticky so it can be removed by the moderator or editor if traffic gets below a certain threshold.

This will avoid the problems of articles that no one reads.

I'll have you know that my article on how to inspect a used EOS 7D has garnered one Facebook Like and TWO comments! (Which is two more than nearly all the other user-generated articles).

If the articles are occasionally promoted on the home page of DPReview, I'm sure their hit counts will go way up. But there's otherwise little chance that someone will stumble into a user-generated article that's he will read.

Is there any change in your decision, Please DPR?

I have more NEWS & INFORMATION - for NEW ARTICLES! How to bring it to Respected DPR Members?
