Site updates: Gear List, forum articles and more

We've recently introduced a few small but, we hope, welcome improvements for dpreview members. You may have stumbled across them whilst browsing, but we thought it would make sense to bring them to everyone's attention. In brief: you can now edit comments you've made on news stories, articles and previews, we've introduced a 'Gear List' to your profile, and you can now feature your articles in your chosen forum(s).

Note - we haven't mentioned the new-style profiles here, as they where actually introduced a while ago, and we've got some cool new features on the way, which we'll tell you about soon. If you've not yet seen your new profile check it out by clicking here.

My Gear List

Your profile now has a 'Gear List' where, if you choose, you can detail the equipment you have (or had), and the bits you'd like. Every product page and every news story featuring a product in our database now features an 'Add to My Gear List' button, to allow you to add it to your owned or wanted list. You can go directly to your gear list by clicking here.

You'll find your gear list on your profile page. Click on 'Add to your Gear List' and start typing the product name to add items quickly (you can also enter custom names).
You'll also find buttons for adding products directly to your gear list in many news stories (left) and all product pages (right).

Featuring your articles in your chosen forum(s)

One of our hopes for the user-created articles feature was that it could be used as a sort of 'super stickies' tool for the forums, giving you a more powerful, permanent place to store FAQs, top tips and heavily bookmarked posts. We've taken the first step towards this goal by adding the ability to associate (feature) individual articles in up to three forums.

When editing an article you'll see a new 'Forums' link in the properties area. Click on this to feature your article. You can associate individual articles with up to three forums.
within a few minutes you'll see your article appear in the 'Related articles' widget on the right hand panel of the forum(s) you picked.

Please fix the "Gear" list. It is very hard to use. For example, if I type in "Can" to get to the Canon list, the items are shown in apparently random order, and there's no option to scroll down the list. Instead, I have to read everything shown, click on the next page option and look again, etc. It would be much nice if the window showing the list was sizeable, that the items were in alphabetical order and if I could select multiple items at once.

You can delete any item by putting your mouse over the name - you'll then see a little trashcan icon on the right hand side.

Products filtered by search terms now appear in alphabetical order, which should make it much more logical to search.

Making the window bigger and allowing multiple items to be selected at once are both on our list of items, but adding your gear list in its entirety should just be a one-time inconvenience.

Is "Gear" list work in progress? It is missing many of cameras and lenses I've owned over the years and still do. For example it is missing venerable Fuji F10 and F30 camera (I have not checked if F11 and F31fd are on the list).

On the lens list, several discontinued lenses are missing, such as, for example, a very popular Nikon 28-105 F/3.5-4.5 AF-D, Nikon 70-210 F/4 AF, or Nikon 180mm 2.8 AF (although 180mm 2.8 AF-D is in the list). Did you guys only put lenses currently in production on the gear list?

There was an error in our weighting algorithm that should be fixed now. The FujiFilm cameras you quoted should be appearing now. Thanks for reporting the issue.

This will allow amazon to target very powerful ads to Dpreview viewers. You know what gear each user has and they might be interested in. Smart marketing move!

The new features are fine but what I REALLY want from DPR are more (and quicker) camera reviews! Please concentrate on the basics. We seem to be getting lots of 'previews' but these are of no more than interest value - it's the in depth reviews that make this site stand out.

i've said it before, and i'll say it again. Our software developers don't review cameras.

"i've said it before, and i'll say it again. Our software developers don't review cameras."

Maybe that's the problem?

Edit - That came out blunter than I meant it to! I meant, maybe you could take some staff off dev and onto reviews? But you know your stats - I guess more people must visit DPReview for the site features than reviews now. You've got to cater to your market.

Our 4 software developers are essential for the smooth (ish) running of a huge, complex site serving around 1.5 billion pages a year. They are not, however, qualified to write camera reviews. That's what the rest of the staff are here for. And they're all busy writing reviews of production quality products we've just received. We cannot review cameras 'in depth' quickly. It's fast, or it's exhaustive. You can't have both.

Simon - I work in IT, and fully appreciate the amount of upkeep a site of this size takes. I just think that your initial comment didn't exactly reassure anyone that reviews are this site's focus, as you did in your second comment. It's a problem with forums generally - things are open to misinterpretation. Apologies.

I hope DPR will expand gallery tags in near future as they promised, so everyone can see photos of any particular camera model. Now there is just few most popular models and search seems to be not working. It will be very useful!

P.S. Probably you should ask members to add more tags to their photos so it will be easier to find images from particular countries, cities, conditions, camera settings, lenses, filters, photoshop plugins used. And one more thing - there could be also a tag that denotes that image is out of camera with no post processing applied - untouched.

Nice, but is the "Ignore List Header Bug" that I've reported twice ever going to be fixed?

Is there a chance anytime soon that we can delete or update posted forum messages within a 24 hour time period versus the 15 minutes editing time we have now?

Posting 'our gear' is a bad idea in many ways and will be taken advantage of, BTW. Mine is bigger than yours...

people have always listed their gear on dpreview, we're just providing a fancier way to do it. As with all these features, you don't gotta use em.

I think you'll find that's a nice cash cow for dpreview. A lot of people would like more then the 200meg monthly bandwidth limit.
