Hello,

I'm new to the Canon SLR Forum but not to dpreview. I used to be very active in the Fuji Forum. I currently have a Fuji 6900Z and want to move to a DSLR.

Here's my delima. Should I buy a new 10D for about us$1,500? Or, I have an opprotunity to purchase a one year old used D1 for about us$2,500?

I would like to hear from folks that know both cameras well and any advice you have for purchasing a used D1.

Thanks!

Dan

Abargath,

I shoot a variety of portraits and sports. I am so tied of messing with the EVF and want to here the slap of a real shutter once again. My Fuji is starting to do some quirky things, so this is a good time to move up.

Thanks,

Dan

.......Sorry couldn't resist ;-)..

Depends on what you want to do, if your main line is Sports or other fast action stuff, the 1D was made for it, that isn't to say that the camera won't do other stuff as well , or that the 10D can't shoot sports but certain cameras have heavy biases..

Things to watch out for on a used 1D are the serial number, early ones had problems with noise banding and some may have slipped the net of the hardware upgrade - otherwise , it's not like buying an old D30 or a heavily used D60 as the 1D is a heavy duty Pro hack camera with a shutter life measured in hundreds of thousands of clicks instead of thousands, as it's a PJ's dream camera it was designed to take the Hammer and rigour of daily thrashing..

I'll leave others to point out image quality differences between the two - Hopefully someone who has actually USED both or owns both - as my 1D hasn't arrived yet for me to make a judgement..

People moan about the weight of the 1D and it IS a heavy camera, but Juli Valley was doing the math of the difference in weight between a 10D fitted with the all essential BG-ED3 battery grip loaded with two BP-511s COMPARED to a 1D plus battery and the outcome was that the 10D + Grip was only 200g lighter , 200 Grammes is only about the weight of the 1.4X teleconverter or a couple of Macro extension tubes so nothing really and the extra bulk of the 1D means that it seems to balance lenses better as there is more to grab hold of (that's going by my experience of the 1DS) .. Of course you can take the grip OFF the 10D (or not buy it at all) if you want to travel light, you can't do that with a 1D

It all boils down to your favoured use of the camera and the age of the 1D and it's history

I have both and I'm am ready to throw my 10D against the wall sometimes. Once you've used a 1D, going backwards is hard. The 10D is too slow taking pictures, too slow writing to the CF and mine is not sharp, not even close to my D60 or 1D. I have sent it to Canon for repair and I am not satisfied with the imagesl compared to my 1D. But that is just my 10D, others here have no problems, I was one of the lucky ones to get a dud and it seems that I'm stuck with it.

The 1D is much faster in use, operation and review. If you do long telephoto work, it might have you at a disadvantage. The 10D battry condition is 1000000% better (read much much).

The AA Filter is weaker on the 1D. This provides for more detail to get to the sensor but also provides the possibility for moire.

I think the color is better on the 1D. My opinion.

The 10D has more resolution.

1D. Fast Fast Fast.

1D has more button to control WB and such.

1D has true RAW+JPEG option. Two files and not an embedded JPEG like the 10D.

$2500 is a steal for a 1D.

Speaking for myself only:

If I wasn't intending to ever get a 1Ds, ...and unless i KNEW that the used 1D was in excellent working order, ...I'd get the 10D for now, concentrate my attention on some good glass, and wait(hopefully not too long) to see what the next generation 1D offers performance/cost-wise.

If it's the winner it should-be, then get that one too, and have a good complimentery pair of cameras and a darn-good back-up in case either fails.

Thanks for your comment. I have been lurking the Canon SLR forum for a LONG time and have watched frustrations of the early 10D buyers. Good luck on getting your issue resolved.

I also understand that the 1D has easier controls and requires less post processing. Any thoughts on that?

In the case of sports I would always say the 1D. Sure the 10D has a slightly higher megapixel count but the autofocus system in the 1D awesome and 8 frames per second? The viewfinder is bigger and brighter on the 1D compared to the 10D.

Also the 1.3x focal crop is a big plus over the 10D, don´t get me wrong, I have the 10D and it´s a great camera, suits me better than the 1D.

I also had the Fuji 6900 and it´s a giant step upwards if you know how to handle a DSLR.

Either camera would be an improvement, but the 1D is super on sports. Megapixels aren't everything. It just depends on if you have the extra money and trust the person that the camera is in good shape.

Thanks Adam. I'm a loyal Canon user from my AE-1 days (which I still have)

I've been lurking this forum for a long time and remember the banding problems. How would I know what era serial number the problem was fixed?

I don't know if the 1D battery is heavier than the 10Ds or not, but the body of the 1D minus the battery and the 10D with the grip minus the battery is not that far apart. 200 grams.

Be sure that you understand your FD lenses from the AE-1 will not work with either of these newer cameras.

"I also had the Fuji 6900 and it´s a giant step upwards if you know

I notice in your pbase account 6900 images, 602 images and 10D images. Nice shots. I'm new at the DSLR, but I really miss the control of a real SLR.

Well, I don't know the person, but he is in my same town and says it's in perfect condition. If I buy it, I will definitely visit him and see the cam before I purchase. I just wanted some opinions from this forum so I wasn't wasting my or his time.

The Fuji Forum was a great resource of information when I was learning my 6900Z and I look forward to visiting this forum often now.

Thanks!

Hopefully DavidP or Lee Rothman can answer this as I don't know, also there is the point that many will have had the mod done afterwards, how long has the guy had it? maybe that will give a clue
