I have the SL1 with 18-55 and 18-135 STM lenses. I can't decide how interested I am in the 55-250 STM, since I'm not much of a medium tele shooter. But I'd love to see some images with that lens on the SL1, if anyone has any to post. I'm more interested in the lens for outdoor use (architecture and travel) than for Macro or indoor, since I have the other two lenses for those uses.

Thanks guys ! :-)

Are you asking for images of the camera with the lens mounted?

If you're asking about the image quality of images shot with the SL1 and 55-250 STM they're going to be just as good as with the lens on any of the other 18 Mpix Canon cameras...

These are with the 55-250 STM mounted on a T5i. Which I think has the same internals (processor, sensor). The last image is random houses on a hill. And, my first indication the local sheriff has tagged our truck just for fun.

Here's a few. So far, I haven't had a chance to get out and shoot anywhere, so all were taken inside my house.

You may notice that all were taken wide open - part of seeing how well the lens would perform. The sharpness of the last one is limited by the ISO - but still pretty good for ISO 12800.

Those are exactly what I wanted to see re: inside images Jeff. There is almost nothing better than a cat for checking fine-tuned IQ detail ! :-) Your cats are obviously very cooperative subjects. Mine is photophobic :-/

I think the last one at 12800 is just fine, even at full size. The first one and the flowers were incredibly beautiful at full size. . I found from the first day I had the SL! / 18-55 STM , that it handled high ISO beautifully. The 55-250 lens at wide open is beautiful IMHO. I am totally impressed. Thanks for posting these.

BTW...and o/t, ... when I tried to reply to your post with pictures, it wouldn't let me. I've been having problems with the "text editor" field on both of my computers lately. Sorry my reply didn't pick them up for others to see. I kept getting a message asking if I wanted to change to plain text editor, and if I did, the pictures would be removed. Not today's problem, but I didn't want to remove the pictures !!!

Thanks again Jeff

Just thought I'd send one of a Northern Shoveler duck that I took a couple of weeks ago with my SL1 and the 55-250 mm II (not the STM version).

Cheers,

Gary

The DPReview editor has been giving me fits ever since they switched to the GUI editor a while back. I started a thread about it (originally in "Open Talk", but it was swooshed into the backwaters of the "Feedback" forum.)

Please look at the thread I started about DPReview text editor problems. If you are having the same problems that I am, consider posting to that thread:

Thanks for the great duck image !

Re: why I have "ranger a.k.a"... before my name....when I first signed up for depreview in 2002, I was really dumb, and didn't quite understand about how to list myself on the forum, and didn't really want to put my full name, so I decided "ranger" was appropriate, because I have a great grandfather who was a Texas Ranger, and I am a 5th generation Texan. Later, when I was more comfortable with the forum, and was including my name, to avoid confusion, I just added the "a.k.a." ..... Does that help ? :-)

Wayne - I'll definitely reply to the thread later, or tomorrow. It is dinner time in Texas and I need to get off the forum for a while. I'm glad to know that someone else is fighting with Text Editor . I'm on a Mac, (two of them), and I posted the problem on the Mac Forum, and found that running Onyx fixes it temporarily. But when I do that, it resets some printer settings and I have to then resort those. Solve one problem and you mess up something else.

Thanks for the advice about your thread. Maybe my reply later will give it a bump! Meanwhile, if you have any solutions, please let me know !!!

(I had to switch in and out of text mode to fix the code so I could type this line. The editor had it at the same level as what you wrote.) I'm using Firefox on a Windows 7 PC. But maybe we are seeing the same problem.

Thanks pcake for these images at different focal lengths from 55 to 250. I really like the one of the bench best, but probably because of the composition ands subject, but was glad to see the one at full tele. I appreciate your efforts and for posting them! :-) Sorry "text editor" is giving me a problem with including the pictures in my reply.

You said you rented the SL! / 55-250 STM. Did you like it enough to buy it , or was this just a fun experiment ?

Wayne... I'm on a Mac using Safari. When I try to reply to a message with images, I'm suddenly (as of yesterday), getting a half picture, and asking if I want to "switch to plain text editor". When I click on that, I have a window saying:

"We found images in your post and they are unsupported in plain text editor. If you continue, they will be removed. Would you like to continue?" .

What I want to know is.... if I "continue", will the images be removed from the image poster's thread or reply, or only removed from my reply ? I don't want to remove anyone's images, so have been opting not to "continue", but to only reply without previous text or images. Can you clarify, because I'm clueless here ? :-/ I'll go to your "Rant" link above shortly and put in my .02 cents.

Thanks.... carolyn

If you're not 100% set on the STM, the 55-250mm II can be had mint-condition on Ebay for around $120-$130, significantly cheaper than the STM and nearly as capable (though focus noise is audible, so not really for video).

Below are a few pics I took in my back yard w/ the 55-250 II on my SL1.

Thanks. for posting these nice pictures. I'm not entirely sure I would use a 55-250 enough to justify the purchase, but if I get any lens in that focal length , it would be the STM.

This is a different symptom than I have. I don't have any problem displaying the images. My problem is editing text below the image. If I can't edit the text I can't finish the post, so my only option to abandon the post (if I don't want to lose the images.)
and asking if I want to "switch to plain text editor". When I click on that, I have a window saying:

I'm pretty sure that any images will only be removed from your post. It won't affect the images in anybody else's posts. The problem is because the markup codes that DPReview uses in "text" mode doesn't support images. Simon replied in my post saying that they are working on extending the text mode, presumably to support everything that the GUI editor supports.

Simon hasn't replied in the thread. Maybe he'll reply to your post and say something about the status of fixing the text editor.

Carolyn, I have taken thousands of pictures with the Canon T2i (550D) camera and 55-250mm IS lens for a little over two years. A lot of mine can be found on the weekly Show Your Snaps threads.

I assume that the Canon SL1 (100D) camera with the 55-250mm STM lens will be slightly better (from what I read in the reviews).

Here's one of my images that I took in early February. I also use the lens for flowers, insects, landscapes and people pictures too. It's relatively lightweight and easy to handle. It has served me so well, that it's one of the reasons that I didn't rush out to buy another telephoto lens.
