I have recently sold my Fuji X-Pro 1 and X100s, and I am selling my remaining lenses for the system. Having previously owned a NEX 7, I was thinking of returning to the Sony fold, and would appreciate some lens recommendations for the A6000.

I would probably get the 18-200 zoom (though not sure which one to buy), but would appreciate some advice as to which other lenses are regarded as 'good' lenses. I'd be looking for recommendations in relation to primes to cover my interests, but do not require long zoom facility.

The reason for my questions is that the Sony E-mount seems to offer a fairly bewildering range of options, some of which I think are FF E-mount, and with a bewildering range of quality.

Thanks for any assistance.

I got the 18-200LE for my NEX-7, my only E lens. That lens is a piece of trash, well, at least for me. IF I want to buy an APS-C E zoom lens now (which I am not), I would go for the Zeiss 16-70/4.

The FE lenses are full frame. I would generally skip them as they are just going to be more expensive, larger, slower, etc. The best bets are the SEL24, SEL35, SEL50. Each has pros and cons. Pick which focal length (and other factors) you need most.

SEL24 - expensive, - no OSS, + sharp

SEL35 - least sharp (still very good), + best general purpose lens (cost, AF, focal length)

SEL50 - slow focus, + cheap, + sharp

I'm not sure how anyone can answer that as you haven't said what sort of photos you want to take!

Based on my experience, if you want to take landscapes/architecture I would highly recommend the SEL1018 wide angle zoom - I have so much fun with that lens, and it is one of the few, if only, E-mount lenses in that range, so it makes it a fairly easy choice if you're interested in that focal range.

You have two paths with higher quality. One path is if you want to stay APSc and a second path to go FF either on its own or as a two body system. Assuming APSc path in the foreseeable future, IMO, a high quality complete system would be (pick depending on your needs):
E 10-18/4 OSS (or Touit 12/2.8) - ultra wide
E 16-70/4 OSS ZA - normal zoom
FE 70-200/4 OSS G - portrait/action zoom

The above covers you from 15mm to 300mm equiv range (20x) at f/4. Then, consider primes:
E 20/2.8 (landscape/snapshot/pocket solution) or E 24/1.8 ZA
E 35/1.8 OSS (or FE 35/2.8 ZA... this is where it gets interesting, if staying APSc, the 35/1.8 makes more sense). Touit 32/1.8 is another option.
E 50/1.8 OSS (or FE 55/1.8 ZA... The 55/1.8 gives upgrade path to FF and is better portrait FL on APSc but more expensive and does not have OSS if you want it)

The longer FL to come should be FE lenses.

Yes, I was aware that I had not specified anything other than prime lenses, although was looking for a spread, to offer flexibility. The suggestions in the responses are very helpful. However, as I thought, from reading as much as I could before posting, the quality of lens for the system does not appear to be as consistent as the lenses for the Fuji X system. What is attracting me back to Sony is the prospect of a mirrorless camera with AF performance which gets close to DSLR performance, i.e., the A6000. I have found it very difficult to develop the skills necessary with the Fuji to get decent photos of moving subjects, such as my daughter. I may be deluding myself but thought the A6000 might give me a decent chance of success.

Anyway, thanks to you for your response, and for all the other responses. I will have to make a decision soon, as a holiday in Germany is in the offing, and the info offered is very helpful.

This looks great. however, the reviews of the E 16-70/f4 are very varied. This would have been a definite for me, but the lens seems to polarise opinion, and the QA seems to be questionable. That is what is making me hesitate, as that would have been my 'walkabout' lens of choice.

That would be the only zoom lens I would conside on any mirrorless camera today: great range and size. I don't but too much into personal ramblings in these forums (more are willing to put it down for its price tag and that they beliee it should be smaller and faster). This includes reviewers.

I read similar ramblings about Sony 16-50/2.8 SSM (A-mount) when it was launched. I picked up one and wouldn't trade it for another on APSc cameras. Take a look at reviews by owners complete with samples to get a better idea.

And in an era when everybody demands stabilization, it is possible that sometimes there will be decentering issues (potentially also because the reviewer did not bother to turn off OSS on tripod). The E 35 is my only lens with OSS and that thing is impressively sharp, anywhere on the frame. Wide open it is superb too (you can view some of my samples at different apertures and including demonstration of OSS at dyxum).

Hi,

To be honest the range of lens from E-mount cameras are fairly limited and those that are of reasonable quality(not excellent) are rather expensive in excess of $950 each. They are also very bulky from the zoom lenses, e.g 16-70mm and 18-105mm

High quality(close to excellent) are available in wide range of focal ranges, typical prices range from $300-$400 each for the prime lenses. These lenses are really compact and handy to carry around. The zoom range is also very compact but not cheap about $1000 for f2.8.

I am buying more m4/3 lenses for the bodies, but still maintaining my Nex range of cameras which still give high quality images using kit lenses and cheaper lenses from Sigma e.g. 30mm.

I got the original 18-200 E-mount lens when I first got my NEX-7. I used it almost exclusively for the first year. Once I began using Sony E-mount primes, their superior image quality (compared to the 18-200) made it hard to put the 18-200 back on my NEX-7. More recently, I purchased the Zeiss 16-70; I've gotten some good images using it, but I still use the primes for most of my shooting.

This is what I recommend, starting roughly with the lenses I like best. (The situation determines which one I pick.)
  1. SEL35F18
  2. SEL24F18Z
  3. SEL50F18
  4. SEL1018 (10-18 zoom with maximum aperture of f/4.)
We also have a variety of A-mount lenses that I can use via the LA-EA2 adapter. (My wife uses them on her A77 too.) I recently purchased a pair of macro lenses made by Sigma (180mm and 105mm) that are very nice. I've also gotten some nice shots from the "Bigma" (Sigma 50-500). The nice thing about these lenses is that they all have very good optical stabilization and they are all full frame compatible in the event that I decide to purchase an A7 or A7r.

- SEL1018 + SEL1670Z + SEL24 OR SEL35; (landscpae + walk around + low light)
- SEL24 + SEL35 + SEL50 OR Simga 60mm; (prime/portrait shooter);

NEX-6 + SEL50F18 + Sigma 30mm F/2.8 + Sigma 19mm F/2.8 + Canon FD50 F/1.4 S.S.C
Yep. Option 1 is my preference, I just haven't plucked up the courage to buy the 1670 yet. You may want to also consider the 55-210 for wildlife/sport/other long-distance activities.

yep.

i have option one with the sel24. i'm trialing this out on a couple upcoming trips.

however, i also have the sel50, sel55210 + tele conv, and sigma 30 so i can pretty much shoot anything.

Fe 70-200 f4 can we attach in nex 3 or nex 6

i never tried ff lens on nex 3 yet

Not sure how much your budget is but if it is just one lens, the Zeiss zoom is awesome!!!

Good luck with whatever decision you make.

I'm new to E-mount myself, but so far what I've been able to gather are these points:

1) 18-55 is better than 16-50

2) 16-50 has absurd distortion, and the power zoom is annoying when the camera goes to sleep. It will hold you up when it needs to wake up.

3) 18-200 come in two version, one Sony, the other Tamron. Tamron is the better one. Both are pretty bad at the long end.

4) 55-210 is much sharper across the frame, across the range, including long end, than either 18-200.

5) 35/1.8 is very good, but it's starting to get a little pricier at this point. However, I've seen claim how it's the cheapest 35mm with OSS of any brand.

6) Except for a few prime lenses, the rest of the lenses are absurdly expensive.

7) Primes to consider are Sony 50/1.8, Sigma 19/2.8, 30/2.8, 60/2.8 (?).

8) LA-EA2 adapter can be found for about $200 used, and will let you use A-mount lenses. The camera becomes technically just like an SLT but with stabilization (except for a few Sigma lenses that have stabilization inside the lens). This adapter feels odd and massive, and A-mount lenses are heavy and awkward on an E-mount camera. E-mount lenses tend to be pretty good quality. The 18-55 for instance, competes with a hugely expensive 16-50 2.8 A-mount lens on an SLT for instance (IMO). Opinions will differ here.

If I were to get one expensive lens, it would be the 18-105 lens. It has motorized zoom and I don't know how good it is handling manual focus adjust. But the range is good for walkaround, and it's constant f4, and it's supposed to be pretty sharp throughout the range. It's much better than the 18-200 superzoom. I don't like superzooms, because the image quality in a given range *always* is hugely compromised. A super zoom that's good at everything, is not possible I think. I've never seen it done anyway. I had an A-mount 18-250 once, sold it two weeks later, couldn't stand the compromised image quality.
