AF is possible with Pentax KAF2 mount lenses with a maximum aperture of f4 or larger...

But amongst the compatible lenses mentioned, is also the Pentax HD560mm that features a maximum aperture of f5.6. Of course a warning is given that phase AF may be inaccurate.

So I'm now trying to guess how it will operate with the Sigma 500/f4.5, that should be ok. but AF is so important at a 700mm focal length....

They seem to have gone for the uncompromising IQ route, judging by the price...

Many see this as a precursor to a FF camera. I'm not sure but glad to see the TC anyway.

Its priced in line with the competitors 1st party TC's

"**The camera’s firmware must be updated to the latest version before using the autofocus function. Compatible camera bodies are: K-3, K-50, K-500, K-30, K-5 II, K-5 II s, K-5, K-01, K-7, and K-r. Autofocus is possible with a PENTAX lens having maximum aperture of f/4 or brighter."

This could mean that the latest firmware update might make AF work better on current PZ TC's and various SDM and HSM lenses automatically

Not that i will want to use it with those lenses ;)

But i would certainly use it with my DFA100mm Macro WR !

Good news, sure the price is high but rthe Canon Tc 1.4XIII is not cheap either !

If one thinks that it is aiming for an FF camera lens compatibility, it might be interesting to see that they did not comment on the FA's and they warned that the teleconverter will not be able to convert the DA 15 and DA 21 to full frame compatible.

May I ask what the line of thinking is behind that? How does the release of this teleconverter (perhaps) add to the belief that a FF is coming?

Man - I thought it would be pricey, but they surprised me. My A* 300 and Vivitar 1.4x cost less combined than that converter. It even makes the 1.7x look cheap.

On a side note.... "exemplifies our commitment to providing photographers with useful products and accessories that enable them to execute their creative vision."

What an unimaginative load of tripe.

I miss the Ned days.

You might look at the kind of result obtained, with the use of such a teleconverter, by Ricehigh on his blog to make his Pentax kit lens become FF compatible on a Canon 5D. You will understand.

I wonder why AF would be inaccurate, because it is f/8 effective?

Maybe just went for uncompromising price.

The Canon 1.4x III is 7 elements in 3 groups, where this Pentax is 4 elements in 3 groups.

It also makes me wonder if they had to put special electronics in it to make it work. Don't people say the Tamron with PZ contacts doesn't focus properly with some lenses?

Hey my friend,stay cool ;-)

Pentax AF is working till 5,6 without any problems :-)

DA*300 + AF adapter 1,7x gives 6,7 without any problems ;-)

The optical quality of the new converter is very high with DA*300,absolute on Canon 1,4x III niveau :-)

Best regards

That's nice to hear! Official specs are always cautious anyhow: the Sigma 1.4tc EX DG that this Pentax will replace has only "MF" as official spec with the Sigma 500/4.5, for all the brands. Still AF was ok. on the K5IIs. So the prospect of K3+sigma 500/4.5+pentax 1.4tc is exciting. The HD coating is a nice feature as well.

That's the $600 question. The Kenko SHQ PZ 1.5X is already sharp enough to stand pixel level cropping. If the Kenko can auto-focus a DA*300 properly with the new firmware, I may not jump on the new Pentax TC just yet.
