Dustin Abbott wrote an exhaustive review about the image stabilized Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD super zoom. He defines the Tamron as a “game changer” and compares the lens to the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS.

He breaks down pros and cons of his long review (with lots of sample images taken at different focal lengths).

Pros:
  • A truly fantastic price/value
  • Optical excellence throughout almost all the focal range
  • Versatility of a 4x zoom range
  • Reaches 600mm (900mm+ equiv on crop sensors)
  • Sturdy, weather sealed construction
  • Excellent VC
  • Better than expected focus speed and accuracy
  • 6 year standard warranty in North America
  • Low CA and strong resistance to flare
  • Excellent color rendition
  • Smooth bokeh transition and highlights
  • Good minimum focus distance = good maximum magnification
  • Did I mention the price?
Cons:
  • Slight sharpness falloff at 600mm
  • Focus speed slightly slower towards longer end of zoom range
  • Exhibits zoom creep
  • No internal zooming means that overall length grows significantly
  • Case not included
  • 95mm filters will be expensive
  • Maximum aperture of f/6.3 on the long end
  • Fairly big and heavy

I certainly hope it's a game changer, but unfortunately all the links are broken except for the youtube video which is so badly lit that you can't see anything.

if it is too good to be true....it usually is ;-)

cheerz.
LOL! Valid point. I'm heavily thinking about this lens. Reviews are sounding great but I was burned with a Tamron lens once but this was years and years ago. Lots of pondering going on ...

Haven't seen any stand out image taken with it yet but maybe the best option for me to get the reach, hopefully better IQ wise than a x2 extender on my 3000 f4 or an SX50 !

:)

That must be some beast to carry around a 3000 f4, and those 750mm filters must cost a bit as well unless it has the slot in type - lets hope so.

:)

All links work for me on my MacBook Pro

Mac 10.7.5 / Safari 6.1.1

Looks very interesting, especially as it would give me the same sort of reach on my 5D3 as my 100-400 gives me on my 7D.

Would like to see an SLRGear review sometime soon.

they moved sites, because there was such demand and the site overloaded. so, just be patient, try again later.

Takes forever to load, but I finally did. Keep trying

those links are working a-ok for me...

I already have the 95 mm filter . Last month when I went in to shop to ask about the lens they said there was more info on web than they had .

Anyway , I asked about the filter - OOS [ out of stock / back ordered ] Probably be a run on them when lens come in . Order now and get 10% off - OK order me one . My info is on file and filter came last week .

As far as the adapter rings go , they work but are a pain to use , warp / bend to easy . The plastic ones don't stick as much , but after 2 uses - were not tight anymore . If anyone tries the adapters , be sure to order the filter wrenches to . If you have filters you should have a set of wrenches anyway ,

Yes , I am in the filter camp - protection , kind out - easier / safer to clean a filter than a lens . Now , I am watching ebay for a spare - -

Great review by ephotozine. They have said everything that I've wanted to read! I'm just finding excuses/reasons to buy this lens.

On a side note, to everyone, how important is 'weather sealing' for a telephoto zoom?

Good question, keep in mind that neither the 100-400 nor the Sigma 50-500 are sealed either, so...not sure what options you have that are with that kind of reach. 70-300L and the L primes I guess.

Yeah beats me too. Its something that struck me when I went on my debut photography trip to a wetland reserve. But I guess even if it were weather sealed, I wouldnt really want to fight through the weather with my expensive gear!

Placed my pre-order. Btw the website says the lens has a Moisture-resistant construction that helps prevent moisture from penetrating the lens.
