Let's Get Louis to Return

Sometimes, in order to affect change, one must be the spear carrier who is the point man. I don't see any changes in the forum that Louis wanted.
Sorry to ask, but who is Louis? And what is his DPR handle?

The reason I ask is because I would like to read his past threads to understand what changes he wanted in this forum.
he goes by l_objectif

his concerns about changes in the forum were stated in this post

Louis is a stalwart of this forum, talented, generous & gracious

Has Louis actually left us? I read his 'construction' post. I thought it was pretty reasonable but didn't think he was saying he was going to leave.

Its fair to say that there have, in the recent past, been a few posts which are a little 'thin on content'. And perhaps there has been a tendency for us to focus on our own images at the expense of constructively commenting on others - although this charge could never been have been levelled at Louis. I try not to be too self indulgent but if I have then, I apologize.

I didn't get the feeling leading up to Christmas that Louis showed any intention of leaving. In fact one of the last posts was full of christmas cheer.....

I will miss the cheeky old gent if he has indeed left - he was part of the fabric of the forum. Lets hope he reconsiders and in the meantime lets try to keep our posts relevant, well mannered or at least amusing.

He seems to be upset with someone - who and why?

I think it is a case of "noise" vs "signal", to use a popular current expression. "Noise" meaning posts without any real content, vs posts that add value and information to the group ("signal"). Of course we all post "noisy" posts, but I guess it is a matter of balance and Louis probably felt that the balance had been tilted the wrong way.

More specific, my reading was that he felt that some people were spamming the forum not only with "noisy" posts, but also multiple threads. The problem is that given the way the forum works, anyone who posts multiple threads pushes other people's threads out of sight, which is really not very good.

Also, I saw him having some "strong" exchanges with some people, and I guess he felt that they were impolite or even rude towards him.

Anyway, that is my subjective opinion of why he decided to leave.

Personally, I feel that sometimes, but not often, the discussion is moving too much away from Leica products and images. For example in one instance out of the first 25 posts, 17 of them were non-Leica related. I am not suggesting we do not have non-Leica related posts, but please let's have more Leica related posts. I would love to learn more about Leica lenses for example and how they can be used in different situations and even different systems, e.g. GXR, A7R, Fujifilm cameras etc I would love to see more images from MM and X-vario. I would love to understand why some people still prefer the M9 vs the M240, because in most cases I do not see any relevant evidence. I would love to see more images from S shooters, and so on.

I will finish by saying that I know that my own images are not good enough to be posted here, but there is a process of learning and encouragement in this forum that I appreciate. I would not want to lose that, so I think everyone should feel comfortable posting their images ever if they are not sure of their quality. But, we need to keep the balance right.

I guess this means more "signal" less "noise"...

D,

I think we were both essentially writing the same thing at almost the same time, see my post.

I wonder if that makes me a spammer...mmm...

I think you should have more confidence and post more often BTW. Its not about posting the worlds most amazing images its about posting what you consider to be worthwhile images. None of use are HCB not even hugues ;)

I always look forward to your posts.

I am confident that I am objective in my self-assessment. ;-)

Also, the better I get, the more I realise how much work I still have to do. It is like education, when you finalise realise how little you know, you are ready to get your degree and move on to the next stage.

If Emil says he left, I think we can trust that he knows what he is talking about... Also I have seen him posting at LUF which I do not think he was doing before.

He will not come back if you use such language Paul! :-)

Very true and well said.

Having read Louis rules now, I thing there are sound, and in this forum were (are?) too many aggressive unproductive comments. Even comments about hardware, they have never seen and used, but have a need to be sarcastic. What a pity. But this is not unusual in various forums !

are you saying Louis left because the noise of other posters was drowning out the signal of his posts?

Seems quite a feeble reason to leave.

David

and don't give a sh*t about what other people are saying.

Be a good sport, and come back!

I did not mean that, as I never said that he considered his posts the only valuable ones in the forum. I think his focus was on how other people behaved and posted. Anyway, this is my reading of his posts and I think it was not difficult to understand who upset him. By the way, I thought you knew as well because you did challenge him in another forum about this, before the thread was locked or disappeared.

Look, I do understand that communication over the internet is difficult and people misunderstand each other. But, given Louis's contribution to the forum, my opinion is that we should have all made an effort to understand what upset him and if we could do something to keep him here. It is always easy to make other people upset and push them out, it is much more difficult to create a space where differences are resolved amicably and we care for each other.

Anyway, he probably does not miss us, he seems to have a good time at the other forum.

I guess it is true what the Greek philosopher Heraclitus said, "nothing remains still and everything changes"... We have lost many good members of this forum, hopefully many good ones will join.

Yes I did challenge him in the "Feedback and Suggestions" forum when he suggested that DPReview introduce a limit on the number of posts anyone could post in one day.

He proposed 10; which I thought was very hypocritical as he himself is (was) one of the most frequent posters to the forum.

Kind of goes against one of his own rules (no.5) about freedom of expression.

To keep the conversation light, I remember one time I went to the theatre and the play starts with the two characters coming on stage. Suddenly, one of them starts screaming and screaming. The other one looks at him completely shocked... "What are you doing?" he says... And the other guy says, "I am abusing my freedom of speech!" :-)

I think this was more about limiting the number of posts started, rather than the number of times anyone posts responses to other's threads

I could not find your reference in Feedback & Suggestions, but inferred this from my discussions with Louis

we have been inundated with folks posting their daily takes, rather than photographs they felt were outstanding or for which they had questions

when constructive criticism is offered, these new contributors take quick offense

Leica Talk has undergone a major transformation & one that saddens old timers, like myself

The thread got locked and deleted very quickly.

Nothing even remains in my posting history.

So it was okay when Louis was abusing his freedom of speech but not others?

David
Do you really think that Louis was over-posting? I do not think so... Most of his posts were encouraging posts to other posters and his own threads were always extremely well received.
