Which Camera

Hi,

This is my first time here and was looking for some help/addvice in selecting a new camera. The range today is getting so confusing, I presently have a Samsung NX11 and a Cannon G12 and was looking to upgrade to something more suitable for some Street Photography whilst travelling overseas. Things I would like but not a necessity are a large sensor, interchangeable lens, view finder and a tilting screen. Would be great if it also had good low light ability and focus as well as took great photos and not be too large in size. Is there such a camera or am I asking to much in a single item?

Cheers

OK.

I'd have said the G12 and NX11 were very well suited to street photography ( and traveling ).
Things I would like but not a necessity are

a large sensor
Like an NX11
, interchangeable lens
Like an NX11
, view finder
Like an NX11
and a tilting screen.
OK, here you have me. :-) But as you say it's not a necessity.
Would be great if it also had good low light ability and focus as well as took great photos and not be too large in size. Is there such a camera or am I asking to much in a single item?
Well there's no camera that takes great photos - that's your job. That's about technique and composition and all that. I'd really look at technique and composition before I'd suggest buying anything. Maybe you might get a lens ( what do you have now ), but nothing you buy will give you great photos without you knowing how to make that happen.

I'd have said the NX11 and G12 were about as small as is sensible and they may not be state of the art in some respects, but they're well balanced and good for general use.

You could easily spend more money ( a lot more ) and gain nothing in practical terms and specifically in terms of producing great pictures.

I know what you mean about the cameras that I have but I am not totally happy with the NX11 and prefer the G12 out of the two as it feels a nicer camera to handle and use. So I thought that it might be time to upgrade a bit to a newer camera in the range finder style with a few more options. Cheers

Olympus OM-D E-M5. But at this point, I would wait a few weeks for the rumored E-M10 and see what it brings, unless you are in a hurry.

If you have a collection of lenses for your NX11, you might want to look at NX30, but don't buy before trying.

Good low light performance comes from the large sensor, plus a reasonably wide aperture lens (prime lenses are generally brighter than zoom lenses).

Taking great photographs comes from the photographer. The world is full of people taking boring photos with expensive cameras.

Focussing in low light is always tricky. Often manual focus works better - use a lens with a distance scale on it and preset the focus to, for instance, 8 ft.

If you look at the work of Willy Ronis, or Brassai, or Doisneau -- all their photos were shot with manual focus, typically on a full-frame 35mm format with a 35mm lens.

Some people like the Sony RX100 as a P&S style camera with a moderately sized sensor. It's not quite my idea of a camera ( no viewfinder ) but it's small and might suit a street shooter.

Thank you as this advice removes quite a few cameras from the choice that is available these days.

The cheapest is probably the Panasonic G6. It's a good camera and a good value. The older G5 and G3 can sometimes be found at very low prices. They are similar in shape and features, but the G6 was significantly upgraded and is worth what they ask for it. The Sony NEX-6 also has what you want. It isn't cheap, but is a good value. It's more compact than the G6 and has a bigger sensor. It also comes with a tiny kit lens that collapses down to a very small size. That's nice for street shooting. It also has a nice zoom range that starts out at a wider angle than most mirrorless kit lenses (the equiv. of a full frame 24mm instead of 28mm most start at.) Another mirrorless camera that would be great for street shooting would be the tiny Panasonic GM1. It doesn't have all the features you asked for, but the body is the size of a typical point & shoot and the lens is tiny when collapsed. It also starts out at the equiv. of 24mm, but doesn't have as much range as the Sony lens. No big deal. What you get here is the tiny dimensions. Other cameras with a viewfinder tend to be more expensive, like the Panasonic GX7, Olympus OM-D E-M5, and Fuji X-E2. Nice cameras all, but in the $1000 and up range (with lens). The Samsung NX20 is cheaper, but it has a reputation for slowness, and you don't like your current Samsung, so maybe not for you.

Thank you I will start looking at all the suggestions regarding the cameras mentioned, could go over the $1000 for something special. Spend a bit more now and save in the long term.

Thanks for the help.
