Vario-Tessar T* FE 24-70mm F4 ZA OSS mounted on A7R

If this lens is a bit of a flop like the e mount 16-70 zeiss, it will really hurt sales of A7(r)...

SEL1670z doesn't seem to be a "flop", at least here in Japan, where it was a #1 sold lens (of all brands!) for about 2 months last year, almost impossible to get until about Christmas. Now it is ranked #15 (according to kakaku.com which aggregates all major retailers) overall, and the top of all Sony lenses by far. I wonder how it sells in other countries? But "flop" seems like a rather strong statement...
Sorry, I meant flop as in Optically. It's not worthy of the Zeiss badge from the images I have seen.

Apparently the lens extends a little (few cm) when zooming.

Looks quite nicely balanced to me; looking forward to seeing resultant images :)

Comparison to the Tamron 28-75/f2.8 I am currently using:

Looks like without the lens hood the Tammy would be 4-5cm longer, barrel size is about the same (67mm filter thread for both), and about 200g heavier with the LA-EA4 - but you get the extra stop.

AF is pretty good with the LA-EA4, no OSS though.
It can be a good choice ,but the 28-75 has a more poor quality than 24-70 tammy .

Night landscapes are rarely done at wide open apertures anyway, and more frequently for star burst effect as well when you might want to down to f/11 or further.

I do think Sony Zeiss 24-70/4 OSS will be complemented well with any combination of a 24/1.8, 35/2.8, 55/1.8 and 85/1.8. I think the 85 will be announced in couple of months, and the 24 will happen later this year or in 2015.

The FE primes are OUTSTANDING.

However with the A7r designed mainly for static subjects like landscape, I'd bet the majority of users would want a good zoom....

If this zoom is as sharp as say, the Canon 24-70/2.8 mk 2, sony will have a winning combo on their hands.

How does Tamron perform on A7? do you get any AF?

Yes, the 24-70 Tammy (or the Zeiss) are slightly better when tested on the A99:

Plus the Tammy and Zeiss 24-70 are 800g and 1kg respectively... almost double that of the 28-75 f/2.8, and bigger and longer.

It's full AF and full aperture control with the LA-EA4 since it's a Sony A-Mount lens. AF is quick and accurate, better than my E-mount lenses. Colour rendition and sharpness are quite good.

Don't have too many samples uploaded yet, but here is one I shot at an animal sanctuary, through some nets (hence some funny bokeh):

Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 @ 75mm, f4.5, 1/80, ISO320
