Shoulder Strap for 5DIII

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I decided to go with the OpTech Super Classic Pro Loop strap and the Domke Gripper 1.5" strap. I'm sure that these will be more comfortable than the Canon straps that I've been using for years.

Wise choices. I'm going to try one of them too. Thanks for initiating this thread.

I just bought a 6D and it came with a promotional accessory kit which (amongst other things) included a deluxe padded Canon strap, and it's much nicer than the regular one that came with the camera. I imagine it would be available separately.

That's a great alternative to the sling strap........if this is the same one I'm sure you'll be pleased...... http://optechusa.com/Videos/ProLoopSysConn.html

Those loop connectors are very strong and unobtrusive, much more secure on the camera strap lugs than using the tripod screw......

That very well could be the OP/Tech utility strap as that is what they use for their CPS branded strap.

Not a very good image of it, but here it is:

This Kickstarter project might be interesting for those searching for a better camera strap.

Kickstarter: Air Strap

The project is launched by Custom SLR, who appear to have a good reputation and track record. I have put in a pledge. There's just 3 days left, so be quick.

I'll give another vote for the black rapid straps, fit great and it's really easy to move the camera around.

Have been following this thread with great interest as I needed new straps for my 5D3 and 7D (which my wife uses). After taking account of our needs 2 OpTech Pro Loop Straps arrived today. They are easy to fit and distribute the weight of our cameras much more comfortably.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this grest thread for their sound advice, and also special thnaks to the person who started the thread.

Carry Speed FS Pro from eBay

I have a Black Rapid and a Carry Speed. Carry Speed much better. Doesn't slip around. I attach the strap to a RRS Attachment :

which attaches to my RRS L bracket so I can stop hasseling with detaching a strap. I like the sling straps MUCH more than neck straps.

Carry Speed was sued by BR so not available now... but an eBay seller in Brooklyn has new stock and is relaible.

See what they have left as the price on these babies is skyrocketing!

Hi

The Op/tec Pro strap has been by choice foe years for Medium format and all Canon Pro bodies. I have never had any problems.

I prefer the straight strap ends to the loop ends (they are a bit short for me but easier to attach).

Good luck

I really appreciate all the input! I will check out all the great suggestions. Thanks everyone for your help

If you talk to Nikon, they will tell you the bottom tripod plate was never meant to carry the weight of the camera. When you add the weight of a camera + heavy lens this gets worse, ........I'm sure other mfrs will tell you the same.......

I've had few various ones, optech, lowpro and have settled on the Blackrapid. I have the sport which is a shoulder one with an additional strap to prevent it moving around, and i also have the dual which means i can carry around 2 cameras comfortably for a long time (especially useful for weddings).

The quarter-inch thread used for tripods will carry roughly a ton before failing (assuming good quality steel). It's up to the manufacturer how firmly the tripod socket is attached to the camera chassis, but I'd expect plenty of complaints from portrait photographers if it wasn't pretty solid.

Heavier lenses have tripod collars to avoid straining the lens-mount.

I'm looking for a more comfortable shoulder strap for the 5DIII as an alternative to the original canon strap. I would appreciate any input on which of the Optech shoulder straps would work best? Or, if there is another type of shoulder strap that you recommend over the Optech, I am open to that as well.

I am still not convinced on the straps that attach to the tripod mount (with plate or not). Can anyone tell me whether the tripod screw mount is designed to hold that much weight?

I found about the following strap recently and a lot of users are recommending it.

http://www.wapitistraps.com/

I have not ordered one yet.

I have used UPStrap in the past (with Kevlar lining - due to Canon's slot on attaching the strap) and I liked it. However one problem I found on UPstrap is the metal buckles (where you adjust the length). It can cause scratches if you are not careful. Otherwise you have to get their models with quick release.

Used Op Tech and now only Black Rapid for a few years. Use it with 5DII + 24-70/2.8, 70-200/2.8IS and 100-400L. No problems at all. There are various similar/clones of black rapid nowadays.

The socket itself will hold about a ton before failing, assuming it's made of good quality steel. The real strength of the tripod mount depends on how it's attached to the camera body. The same goes for the strap attachments, of course, and I can't see any mileage in making the tripod mount weaker than the strap attachments.

Anybody using their camera on a tripod in portrait orientation puts plenty of stress on the tripod mount, and I think we'd hear about it if it was a weak point.
