So... who wants one? Yay or Nay?

I've got a full EOS3 system, including three (count 'em, THREE!) 550 EX's, an ST-E2, and umbrellas/stands for the 550's. I was waiting for more megapixels and full remote flash control. This sounds like it!

I was thinking about a Minolta D7hi, but by the time I bought external flashes, etc., I'd be spending almost $2k, which seems a bit iffy since I already have a full Canon system. I have been waiting on an EOS 3 Digital (hopefully better than 1.6 magnification factor -- 1.3? -- more focusing points, more refined, more like the EOS3), but will probably go for a 10D for now and just sell it when the one I want comes out.

Time for me to upgrade my now ancient Coolpix 950. G5 looks good if they've fixed the barrel in the vf, and the sensor manages noise very well. Otoh, the 5400, which seems to take aim squarely at the G5, has 28mm at the wide end of its 4x...that is in itself tempting. I'll be watching the reviews and deciding between the two (if I can't afford a 10D...)

Noel...

I'm one above you with a CP990 and I might bite. Sight unseen, I'd take the G5 over the 5400. I would prefer the G5 faster lens and auto focus asisst over the extra wide of the 5400. Have you lost many low light level shots as I have because the Nikon refused to focus? Also unless Nikon's done a major turnabout, the menu system has to be better on the G5.

Good point on the low light...yes, the late 90s era shutter lag and miserable low light focus on the CP have indeed cost me many shots and caused much frustration. That the prosumer Nikon's refuse to use the helpful features on my SB-28 is annoying too, though I'm not sure the G3/5 can use the focus assist on the 420ex or 550ez either. Overall the CP was reasonably priced and with accessories has served me well. But I'm thinking, like you, that Nikon's not keeping up, and since Canon looks like the first vendor to bring DSLRs into my price ranges, I might as well be accessorizing a G5 or 10D now...

Otoh, I DO use the viewfinder all the time, and find the obstruction thing very disturbing in the g3's I've tried. I know it's a small defect, but it feels more significant. It's an embarrassing design flaw, imo.

I wanted more (Optical Image Stabiliser, 6x Optical Zoom etc, different design etc) but this camera will take up the slack where my s400 leaves off. It'll match it with my EX420 external flash and it's designed to work flawlessly with this device. I'll need a wideangle lens and a telephoto but this is pretty much the perfect package even without the accessories.

Couldn't care less about the viewfinder since , like an SLR, you want to see what the camera sees so the LCD is the way to go. My Mother-in-Law bought a black G2 on my advice and hers always looks slick in black.

Can't complain overall. Expected more optical zoom though.

Sweet!

being that i have absoulutly no idea what the new features are, other then then it's a 1mp more and looks so much like the last camera, that all they had to do was change the number in the corner for the ads. i don't care at all about it. it doesn't have the features i want in a camera. to me it's just another silly toy that everyone will find some odd flaw to complain about.

Sure but for such a minor improvement, only 1 mp
That's a million more pixels. And while pixels are not everything to everybody, I need 'em for the pictures I take. :-)

I'm not saying that I will, but I'm not yet saying that I won't. "Probably" is definitely on the menu, however. Heheheh...
spend all that money or just keep what you have another 6-12 months
and get a 5-6 mp prosumer camera with enhancements beyond just the
extra megapixels maybe something that focuses in lower light, takes
more fps, has an enhanced CCD etc.
I've already resolved in myself that I'm a camera hog. I like it that way. In fact, I've been an advocate for a long time now that if you CAN, then you SHOULD have two cameras. I'm half-kidding, and I'm half not. :-)

I'll get what I can now, and let 6-12 months from now take care of itself.

Besides, I'll have plenty of gear to sell, which will make up most of the cost of a new model, whichever way I go.
Everyone clearly has their own
answer to this but if Canon is targeting this camera beyond the P&S
crowd into the prosumer market they should be making improvements
beyond just a 1 mp enhancement after a year.
Uhmm... the G3 is already pointed squarely at the prosumer market. I even know pros who use it for some work. I've used it for pro work myself.

It's not the improvements that matter so much as what the camera is simply able to do. If the G3 was a great camera, then the G5 will be great --- but with even more pixels. The fact that it's not what everyone had hoped does little to tarnish its ability. :-)

I'm sure the G5 will stand on its own merits.

My take is that if Canon chose the sensor, then the sensor is most likely doing a very nice job.

There are things I like about the 5400, like the wide.
There are things I don't like about the 5400, like the F4.6 at full tele.

I've pretty much written off the 10D for myself. Perhaps the Pentax may draw me later on.

Please step to the back of the line. hahahahahahahahah...

Just kidding.

What makes you want to go with the older 5000 rather than the 5400? I'm very curious.
My next Canon will be a Coolpix 5000...does that answer your question?

See my G2 pics at http://www.threewood.com
I'm new to the forum, exhausting myself on which digital camera to buy, I keep coming back to the G3, the G5 looks great, but it just doesn't seem to have $200 more worth of features. I looked at your pics ...they are awesome. Are most of them in a manual mode or automatic? I would love to get results such as yours with little effort. The low light photos look impressive...did you have any focus problems??

1) I like new toys
2) I like black color
3) I like extra 1MP (I crop many prints)
4) Anyone wants a like new G3???

Bill
Yes! I want a G3 to upgrade from my S30 (which by the way is doing just fine). I think I would be plenty pleased enough by the G3 change to not miss the extras on the G5. If you are serious about selling the G3 (any accessories?) e-mail me. I check this e-mail about 3-4 times a month, so might be a little slow responding.

Oh,just speculation that Sony might do like Canon and release a non-upgrade.

I thought there might be some sort of rumor about a major body redesign or a completely different form factor... :-)

Interestingly, THAT might get my attention, as I bever liked the F-series body design.
You didn't hear it from me. :-]

Even if true, I'm not put off. I just want to take pictures in the
end.
Although there are threads saying that it may not be what some
users are expecting.
Really? Like what?

(just curious)
