I would be glad to have some suggestions for a memory card for a Canon 20D. The manual recommends a Canon CF card. Any recommendations from 20D users would be greatfully received.

When I had a 20D, I used Sandisk Ultra.

8GB is max for the 20D I think.

Just about any name-brand CF card is fine. I agree with the other poster about making it 8GB or less. 8 GB is big for the 20D file size, and I'm not sure that anything larger will work on the 20D (it may).

I have a 20D, but have not used it for some time. It has just gone out on long term loan to a friend to give him some initial experience of using a DSLR. The specs for the camera state that it is compatible with CompactFlash Type I/II and also Microdrive. No size limitation is quoted, but these specs were written a long time ago!

In practice, as others have said, a good quality, fast transfer 8gb CF card should be more than sufficient. In practice I never used anything more than a 2gb card, with a couple in reserve, just in case. What is most important is that the CF card you choose is compatible with the camera - but you will be surprised at just how many are compatible.

I've used Lexar ("professional 133x") and Sandisk ("Ultra 2" and "Extreme III") 2 GB and 8GB cards with no problems on my 30D, which is almost the same camera.

For general photography you will be fine with less expensive cards from the likes of Fujifilm, Sandisk, Transcend, Lexar... ... if you want to use the camera at its full frame rate then newer Sandisk Ultra cards will fine. The 20D as far as I am aware doesnt support UDMA mode so its not worth it forking out $$$ on expensive CF cards :-)

Thank you to those who responded to my posting. I am going to try an 8GB Sandusky Ultra and see how that works. Regards to all.

I have a 30D which is almost identical and have always used Sandisk Ultra II CF cards, I've never used any larger than 2GB and have never filled one up. Not sure how large a size you can use since when it came out most cards were smaller. I've been using the same cards since 2006 when I purchased the camera, and have never had any problems with them.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a Transcend 8gb, 133x card from Amazon for about $14. It works well!

In my reading it seemed that was the fastest the camera could use anyway, so I went for cheap/slower since any camera I was looking at buying didn't use CF anyway.

Actually 20D can read 16GB CF Cards(i guess selected brands only). Though don't format the card in Camera - it would format to 8GB - and will need to be re-formatted in PC. Be on newest firmware as canon does released some updates for card reliable writing updates.

If this discussion is still valid or for people who are just now looking at this I have found a solution that will allow up to 32gb cards before they become completely unreadable to the camera. I'm sure this applies to any other canon camera that has a limit like this on the amount of memory that it can use.

To solve this issue, I formatted the memory card in the camera (64gb but only able to use 32) and then plugged it into my windows laptop. I then used a program called "Minitool Partition wizard". Click on the 8-ish gb partition on the card, and then select the option, "Move/resize partition". Then in the menu determine the size that you want, I just did 32000, and click ok. Then at the top click "apply" and then let the program do its thing. After it has finished, put the card back in the camera and after about 20 seconds or so the photo counter will read 999 and you are done.

If you want to protect yourself from having to redo this, take a picture and then protect it in the system menu. This will keep the camera from reformatting when you select to "delete all images" in the playback menu.

Hope this helps, it took me about 2 hours of messing with partitions and such before this worked for me.

Good Luck!
