That was a good read.

I personally want full frame in the most compact package but need fast autofocus with my Nikon lenses: Df.

"the Df is almost £800 more expensive than the D800′s current street price"

Not where I am - the Df is a couple of hundred dollars less than a D800 here.

Warped Nikon UK pricing does not make the Df a 'luxury' product in the rest of the world. Certainly no more so than a D800 or pretty much any other full frame DSLR except Leica perhaps.

That link is an example of the strange way people compare apples and oranges. If the article had begun with the AF systems, it would have ended there.

would not buy any of them. Both overpriced and in this case, I would go for the D800E/D800

Since you are not really asking...
so get a Canon 5D III,

The Df's competition will be within Nikon.

Anyone contemplating the Sony with an eye toward Nikon would do better to consider the D610.

It is surprising that well over a week after it's release reviewers can't understand that this is a different concept than the latest greatest...

If you already own a D800 and you are looking for a smaller and more discrete street full-frame camera, what would you buy?

What are your choices?
  • RX1
  • a7/a7r
  • Df
  • M9
  • D610 (largest of the pack)
All I am aware of.

Get D610 and some decent glass instead.

The Df isn't that much smaller than the d610...don't know about the others.

The difference in cost between the Df and d610 is $750.

What decent Nikkor glass can you buy for that?
  • 14-24mm f2.8G ED - $1996.95
  • 24-70mm f/2.8G ED - $1886.95
  • 70-200mm f/2.8G ED - $2396.95
  • 16-35mm f/4G ED - $1256.95
  • 24-120mm f/4G ED - $1296.95
  • 70-200mm f/4G ED - $1396.95
  • 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G - $2696.95
  • 50mm f/1.4G - $439.00 - We have a winner!
  • 58mm f/1.4G - $1696.95
  • 85mm f/1.4G - $1599.00
  • 35mm f/1.4G - $1619.00
  • 24mm f/1.4G - $1999.95
Yep, that sweet little 50mm is going to be a great addition to your D610!

Which highlights the real problem with buying into the Nikon System, the decent glass will cost you far more than the body that you choose. For those of us that drank the Nikon DX Koolaide and believed that they were going to continue to support the format, have to replace their expensive decent DX glass with even more expensive FX glass.

Frankly, the fact that you can buy an X-E2 18-55mm/ 55-200mm and a 14mm prime for the same price as the Df - give or take, has me thinking...

I wouldn't touch Sony for any price. They are more than flakey when it comes to supporting a lens mount.

You get what you pay for.

If you think Nikkor is expensive, try Leica.

For sure!

I guess my point is that if you have bought an FX camera in the last 3 to 4 years you would be better served to spend whatever money you have set aside for a new body on new glass. It is a much better investment.

My big gripe is that my now very elderly D2x/D300 are sorely in need of an upgrade for better low light ISO and I am faced with either buying a D7100 which I don't particularly care for or going FX and having to fork over around $3000 minimum for a body and then another almost $4000 for equivalent glass coverage.

Sigh....

I was lucky - I thought. My first real digital camera was the D2H when they were first released.

While a great camera in its time I really wanted a full-frame version of my N90s and purchased, almost exclusively FF lenses with the idea that when I could upgrade the pain would be a little less.

Then I bought the D700. When the D800 came out I bought that, but then found out the limitation of some of my FF lenses needed upgrading anyway. :-|

Err...you left some great lenses out...

There's the 28 1.8g about $700.00
the 85 1.8g about $500.00
The 105 2.8 micro: $900.00, not that much more than the 750 differential...
That's not counting all of the older Nikkor glass, some of which can be had at a real bargain.

The bottom line still holds: you could go for the D610 and save the money and invest it in lenses...whether the 750 differential covers the entire cost of a lens is not the point...even if you apply it towards a lens costing far more, it still makes that lens more affordable.

I don't understand this 'to help' comparison, except than for commercial (ads) reasons
2 totally different camera's with the only exception that they are both full frame and deliver excellent images.
One is aimed at being the high resolution most digitized all-in-one compact mirrorless solution for total media capturing, that is still images and movies.
The other is a camera aimed at those who prefers to have partly manual/mechanical control with their camera, which is aimed at 'pure' photography and photographers and not at all at speed or a total solution for capturing still and moving imagery.

This kind of postings remember me a bit of those comparisons between the 5D Mark III and D800 "which one to buy" and they had at least some reasonable related comparison.

Of course the consensus is Df. What else would one expect in a Nikon forum?

Ask the same question in the Sony forum with an A7R or Df title and the consensus will be inverted.

I asked this question exactly in the Sony forum last week, and I received many objective and helpful responses.
