I finally had a couple of days to use the 16-70 f4. It's a really versatile lens and used along with the 10-18 makes for a great combination. I also had a couple of primes and a longer lens but the 10-18 and 16-70 were all that I needed most of the time.

NEX 7, 16-70, 1/320, f8

NEX 7, 10-18, 1.6 sec, f9

NEX 7, 16-70, 1/100, f11

Really like number 2, looks like great country for landscapes. Nice one!

Cheers John

Out of curioisity, how does the 16-70 compare with the 10-18 at the 16-18 range? (I'm going to guess that the 10-18 is noticeably sharper, but the 16-70 has an edge in color?)

Hmmm... I really haven't tested them head to head and I'm not sure how much I've used the 16-70 in the 16-18mm range so far. My unscientific impressions are that the 16-70 has an edge in color and has about the same or better sharpness below f8. The 10-18 might have an edge above f8 but I still think it's close. Here is the only image I found with the 16-70 in the 16-18 range (16mm, 1/250, f8) . Maybe someone has some better examples or a direct comparison. I may try to do that soon if I get a chance.

A beautiful series, thanks for sharing.

I have not compared these head to head directly, but from an unscientific review of my pictures, I see no practical difference between the two lenses at 16mm; in fact IMO the 1670Z may be slightly better than the 1018. The 1670 is *possibly* softer at the edges especially wide open, but is much sharper once you start moving into the middle of the frame. And stopping down makes them virtually equal at the edges. I am getting better color and contrast from the 1670Z, and it seems much less prone to flare.

A little PP in Lightroom can easily help the 1018 significantly close the color/contrast gap; nothing you can do about the flaring.

Of course the 1018 is way, way, waaaay better at any focal length < 16mm, compared to the 1670. ;-)

thanks for the pics

i am planning on getting 2 lens for my 5N to supplement my 1855 and 1650 ... The 1018 and debating between the Z1670 or the 18105G.

I figure with the combo of the 1018 and the 1670 / 18105G, i have all the focal length variation I need for my style of shooting.

any experience with the 18105 compared to the 1670?

No, I didn't really look at the 18-105 because of the size. The size of the 16-70 is about as good as you can expect with a lens that covers this range and it balances perfectly on the NEX 7 IMO. I also really like the 16mm wide end vs 18.

This panorama photo is particularly nice and instructive. Was this an in-camera panorama stitch, or was it done in post-processing?

Also, it is curious that you do not allow access to full-resolution versions of these images.

Beautiful images, Clayton. I love the smoky mist and color tones, which really give that nice, cool mountain air look. Love the river shot too - nice and rich colors and good perspective. You make me want to get both of those lenses!

Thanks Russell. As far as the panorama this one is a stitch but I do sometimes use the in camera mode especially when shooting handheld and it works pretty good.

Are my permissions not allowing viewing the images larger or are you just talking about the size I have uploaded? (I will double check the DPR permissions). I have Lightroom defaults set up and I've found this size to be about right for internet viewing - plus it's friendlier on my hard drive. But if there is an image that you are interested in seeing at full resolution just let me know.

Russell - just changed the DPR permissions to allow download of originals. Let me know if that is better.
