People keep saying "Nice Leica" when I shoot with RX1R

People that will steal $13,000 worth of Nikon gear will steal $13,000 worth of Canon gear too.

Little pieces of tape isn't going to convince them that your gear is valueless.

In fact they are smart enough to understand the impetus for your camouflage.

For people getting by on a couple of dollars a day all gear is valuable.

My impression is that most de-branding is an affectation but if it makes somebody happy have at it.

IMHO, it looks hideous, while for you it may be functional.

I'd love to black out the all the lettering, and maybe cover the copper ring, but I wouldn't want to botch the overall aesthetics of the camera.

I think maybe you are somehow a more interesting or attractive looking person than average so that people are looking to engage you in conversation. People just pretty much ignore me. Or maybe people really are a lot more attractive holding a Leica than a Sony. I would not know.

But anyway, I occasionally I have used the line "Oh, its just an old prototype. I don't think we sold any of these."

Hideous? Rather silly and strong language just because I used the same material to cover the entire face of the camera. How would this "botch" the aesthetics of a camera. Strange comment; to each his own.

I do wish that camera makers would include PIN protection that bricks the unit if the wrong code is put in more than 3 times. It would be very easy for them to do.
+1, and worth repeating.

I don't know what it is about my RX1R, maybe it's the Leica-style Fotodiox hood that I use on it, when I'm out shooting, from time to time people keep shouting at me, in one of the following ways:

"Nice Leica!"
Thanks, takes good pics too
"Is that a Leica?"
Sure cost enough, hope so... ;-)
"I bet you can get some great shots with that Leica"
I think so, I just point and shoot ;-)
"Which Leica lens is that?"
The one the camera store recommended or

The one that cost 3,000 dollars.
Since I don't know how to respond, so usually I just shake my head denying, but I think there might be a better way to respond. Any ideas?
Funny stuff, just like the 'your camera takes great photos'. ... well it does but.. ;-)

Suggested (tongue-in-cheek) responses above...

well, nobody has ever said it to me and if they did, i would be absolutely certain they knew nothing about cameras. but if they did, i would just respond "wish it was a leica" even tho i don't. it's just comments from passing ships. makes the day more fun.

Just expressing an aesthetic opinion, sorry about that. I think the original RX1 metal finish looks like it belongs with the lens, and that the 100% textured surface really doesn't. It creates a look that says that it has been covered up.

I guess I'll keep my opinions about looks to myself from now on.

I definitely prefer no labels.

I don't own a single piece of clothing with a logo or corporate slogan or image of any kind. I would feel like a billboard for that company. I never considered covering a camera or tool label however.

Meanwhile, I believe in the non-camera case look.

My rx100 case is a cheap looking sunglasses case, a perfect tapered shape for in/out of pocket, not an obvious item for theft.

My R1 accessory kit is a beat up toilet bag, nasty looking, batteries, external flash, accessory lenses, all kinds of good stuff. Seen in a car or hotel room, not a likely theft target.

I gave my R1 Sony leather case away, have a wide snug wrist strap so I can't drop it, and transport it loose so it is 'more ready' to use , then stuff it under some soft stuff in the trunk. Perhaps I should get a non-descript beat up box to put it in trunk or hotel room.

Prior to R1, the beat up toilet kit fit the S85 camera, conversion lenses, everything.

Personally, I have never had anyone comment on my RX1. People must think that it is just another P&S. But if someone ever does mistake it for a Leica, I may respond with a snarky comment about how I left my Leica at home, because the RX1 is so much better. The only untruth in that statement would be that I actually own a Leica. ;-)

Nonsense. I agree with you.

Stick a Leica decal on your P&S?

True.

"Which Leica is that"

"I'm testing a prototype M10 Cartier-Bresson special edition - it will be out next year and cost $50,000 to invited customers only."

I think that my wording above is not very clear. In truth, I do not own a Leica. The untruth would be claiming that I do.
