People keep saying "Nice Leica" when I shoot with RX1R

No-one has ever asked me anything about the RX1R. I assume that they assume that it is a common P&S. Exactly what I wanted. Even in studio settings, the camera is unobstrusive to the point of being ignored. The silent shutter helps with that, too.

The most common question I get is "That's it?".
...another thing that random strangers say to me often. Very annoying because i thought my camera is unique! :)
Funny ... but what I meant is, "That's it?", as in "I'm done posing for my picture? ... You actually took pictures?"

How did you trim it so well? The hole for the AF lamp, making it seem to be one piece instead of two, cutting away the notch in the left-hand piece (for the Canon "S110" branding)?

  • I'm not paid to shill for Sony (or Honda, et al.).
  • I can't stand advertising.
  • Branding is a visual excema, an intellectual crutch, and a social disease. It exists to undermine experience.
  • An unmarked camera is less noticed. A less noticed camera has less effect on the subject. My goal is not to photograph people being photographed; my goal is to make pictures of people.
  • (Somewhat abstruse:) The visual is readily subordinated to the verbal. Eliminating the verbal gives the visual a little more room to blossom. Imagime how much more people would notice (for example) the sculptural forms of cars if they weren't labeled. If enough people noticed the actual sculptural form of cameras -- who knows? -- we might one day get cameras designed to work with the unique structures of the human hand, face, and eye.

Since I don't know how to respond, so usually I just shake my head denying, but I think there might be a better way to respond. Any ideas?
Get some Leica stickers to put over the Sony name and buy a Hyundai Equus and put Mercedes emblems on it.

My version of the Stealth RX-1

No one know what this camera is!

Japan Hobby Tool Co #4040 (Canon EOS1 Type) grip material

Match Technical Lady Bug — Extremely comfortable and easy to squeeze slow shots

Ricoh GR leather strap — soft leather with suede on the inside

I have tried both the UN Grip and the Fotodiox and find having a larger grip area that doesn't force you to use the small grip area to be the most relaxing for all day hand carrying.

Very nice. I like that a lot. I shall see if that material you used can be obtained here in NZ.

If only it were possible to get rid of "Carl Zeiss" etc from the lens too.

Threadlock?
I was afraid you would go there... 6 months ago I had a loose soft release issue and per some forum thread guidance used a drop of Loctite 222 to make it stick. I've not been able to get the soft release off since. Someone said apply heat, like a soldering gun... with the risk the conducted heat could fry other internals... so have been reluctant to try.

I wish I was important enough to warrant de-branding my life.

I find people don't pay attention to me and my cameras. I get the distinct impression that they really don't care.

It is almost as if they thought that there were bigger issues in the world.

Silly people.

I was just thinking if putting some type of glue might help.

Usually just comes off with a twist. Alternatively liquid gasket compound (from a car supplies shop) is a bit like liquid rubber and when dry ought to hold the threads until you unscrew it.

Alternatively, superglue and leave it there forever...!

I read this thread this morning. Then this afternoon a friend asked if my rx1r was a leica.

I have shot quite a bit of the world myself.....

People that will steal $13,000 worth of Nikon gear will steal $13,000 worth of Canon gear too.

Little pieces of tape isn't going to convince them that your gear is valueless.

In fact they are smart enough to understand the impetus for your camouflage.

For people getting by on a couple of dollars a day all gear is valuable.

My impression is that most de-branding is an affectation but if it makes somebody happy have at it.

Exactly my impression of branding. "Oh -- a brand-name camera!" :-D

....is that they are all branded. True whether it is Canon, Nikon, SONY, Olympus, et.,etc.

That said I will not buy a polo shirt with a pony on it because I find it pathetic and trite and I associate it with wanna-bes.

On the other hand removing the badges from a Porsche 911 is a bit silly.

I've never had anyone comment on my Leica. With the number of people with cameras, they don't get the attention they may have had years ago.

Do get comments on my Canon and 300/2.8, but it's quite large and very noticeable ...
