hi, i'm new not only here but i suppose to photography as well

i do have a canon powershot a 70 that i have been using but now i am needing to upgrade

i have to shoot my paintings for submissions to agents, manufacturers etc

i need to shoot in RAW or TIFF format (and then i need to use photoshop... that is another whole can of worms)

i have been looking at canon, as i know that their customer service was wonderful when i had an issue with my a70, (they fixed it without charge even though it was bought USED!)

and from the very limited research i've done i got the impression that for shooting art it's either canon or nikon

i also know that i need a large amount of mega pixels

i am so not a photographer it isn't funny.. (it's ok if you all are laughing now, cause i am too)

but i really need to figure this out. i have been looking and reading online,

and right now my camera savings account is at 270. with a possible 200 added in the next few weeks (best buy gift certificates)

i did read that the body is one thing but that the LENSES were really what made the shot.

i have a tripod and plan on using that to shoot with, probably in my studio with lights

i would be grateful for any help you folks could give me

thank you

Solution
I agree with the other posters, in that you could look at compact system cameras.

You need something that performs well in live view.

Sony NEX Series.

Samsung NX Series.

Canon EOS M.

Micro Four Thirds cameras from Panasonic and Olympus.

Forget Nikon 1, as they don't have enough resolution for your purposes.

the 5R has a sale on BHphoto right now for $450

you can price match it at bestbuy.
oh my...thank you......how sweet of you!

i got a quote on paper of 449.99 from bestbuys

thank you again

I too am an artist. On your budget I would go to B & H Photo and video link: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/

And I would by a bridge camera like the Nikon Coolpix P7700 or the used Nikon Coolpix P7100 get Best Buy to match their price.

Below is a pic taken in low incandescent light in my dining room with the Nikon Coolpix P7700. This is a hand lettered piece in slate light gray ink on linen parchment with hand water colored water marks. The colors in the pic match to art work 100% and the image is under glass notice the reflection.

how wonderful! i love calligraphy, one of my uncles was a calligrapher and my grandfather on my mother's side was a printer (i never met him, he died in 1920-he owned a print shop...i would LOVE to have inherited his presses and type)

here is a tiny jpeg of one of mine, watercolor on 140# hp it's actually 8.5X11 IRL

edited to add... thank you so much for your suggestion

also.... i love your work

AND my painting is actually much nicer in person and at a reasonable size (see why i need a better camera?)

If you are going to go with a Sony, I would wait for the Sony A3000 to be released. Should be in stores soon.

Sony - A3000 DSLR Camera with SEL1855 18-55mm Lens - Black

Also don't forget you can buy from BestBuy.com too.
i don't think i saw this post (i am so sorry-i'm sort of new here)

i am a bit concerned about too much camera for me, even at that price. as that is a standard dslr right? ..... but i am continuing to do research and i do realize that with a standard dslr, i would have more of a range of lenses down the road to expand. i am not a good photographer, and for me it's not a passion like all you folks, but just a way to get images to either paint or painting images into a format that i can use.

how complicated will it be for me to learn or is a lot of it wasted on me?

i am not opposed to a dslr, i am thinking i may be afraid of them! i see them as for serious photography people and for pros

the other thing is... i was wondering when it is going to be released?

thank you so much

i also see on pre-release it's about 50.00 cheaper then the nex 5r

i am so sorry, this is another post i missed

i can't buy anywhere else at the moment as that's where i have my gift cards

my initial impulse was to go with canon as i have a powershot a70 that i bought used....when it had a problem with the view screen, canon fixed it for nothing and even paid for shipping both ways!

i was sold on their customer service

unfortunately with the reward points, i couldn't get a gift card for the amount i got with anyone else but bestbuy

again thank you so very much

and i am so sorry i missed this post

The cameras are similar. Both are mirroless, using the same kind of autofocus system, the A3000 has both a Electronic Viewfinder and a Rear LCD, some NEX cameras only have the rear LCD.

The A3000 gives you more megapixels, and should have the most up to date technology.

I would NOT expect the A3000 to be any harder to use than a Sony NEX.

thank you so much

i am reading that review now

plus i compared it at bestbuy.com

compared at bestbuy

(i am learning my way around the forum.can you tell?)

i can see why you recommended it..it's standard format is RAW (which is what i need)

it has no touch screen so clumsy people like me can't mess things up

i don't really care about video and i haven't ever used the view finder on the a70.

it is also less expensive..and i was wrong about using regular lenses ....it still is with the lenses from the nex line

(i do actually go look at everything you folks have suggested- i know nothing about this but you all have helped so very much to narrow it down to a reasonable few)

i did get to touch the nex 5r and a few others. this one i won't be able to see and touch for about a month from what i can see

i realize that this is huge and not something to be rushed into because this is going to be the way i get to show my work to agents and manufacturers to not only get future work but also to deliver images that they hopefully will license

according to sony, it should be available 9/08/13

so about a week

which is probably why they have the nex5r on sale today

(please forgive me, i am doing my thinking pro/con here in this reply)

there are a few things i see better with the a3000 ( why do i keep thinking of the broom 'nimbus 2000' from harry potter) i wish however i could handle it in person

and you're right i could use my gift certificates and preorder this

thank you again

vi

who is now torn between....do i wait..or do i go?

vi here again,

with another dumb question

some of the camera's i've looked at say they are compatible with windows vista

however, i have windows 7 and will be upgrading to 8.....

eventually my plan is a mac for the studio and photoshop

is there a way to upgrade for these operating systems?

(yes i have a digital photography for dummies book on it's way)

again thank you all so very much

Operating system compatibility is only relevant to the software that some manufacturers use for transfering or editing files. In my experience this software is a big pain. I usually avoid all of this by using a card reader. Card readers ($5 and up or sometimes built in to the computer) let you copy files regardless of the operating system. So you can take a card from any camera and load the files into any computer.

ok thank you so much

i had a card reader on my desktop (alas it is no more.... the motherboard fried)

not on the laptop but i know that there are usb card readers that i can pick up

and i got the sony nex5r

i got an even better deal on it as it had an 'opened' box- they gave me more money off it

the reason i didn't wait for the a3000 which i did look at online was because it's new...

and i don't know how folks in the real world will review it

i tend to like tried and true ....

now all that being said

i am reading the owners manual, and i hope to start working with this over the weekend

i really don't currently need something for actual motion shots but if i find later that i do

i have learned (thanks to you folks here) that THEN it is the time to get the dslr with a telephoto or something to be able to shoot photos of the birds in the back

i am hoping to learn enough about this camera to begin to photograph my portfolio this week or next so i can upload to the copyright office and a few agents etc

if you all don't mind a non photography sort of hanging around and lurking to try and learn a bit

i wouldn't mind sticking around here

thank you all for your patience, your kindness, and for answering me and my dumb questions

Congratulations on your new camera!

Glad to hear you got a very good deal on it.

You're already starting out on the right foot by reading the manual.

Enjoy!

If you post your question about the battery door, on the Sony NEX Talk forum, you'll probably get a quicker answer to help you.
