When at full zoom the closes down the aperture to F4.0. So getting shallow DOF is going to be a challenge.

How have you been Manlung? It's good to see you in here after so long.
Thanks a lot.

In case if you can try the camera again, would you please try to
shot at somebody with full zoom (4x) and largest aperture i.e. f4.0?

I am really interested to know if it can have shallow DOF for
portrait shots. Thanks a lot.

Thanks, Helen. I am told by Dell my V1 will be shipped June 30th. Another cam that has 5X at 5mp and is pocketable is the Pentax Optio 550.

Have you ever tried that camera to the point of noting any comparison between the Pentax 550 and the V1?

The indoor shots on the V1 were something I was expecting a lot from...

I know with longer zoom handshake is a bigger issue, but carrying a tripod seems like I have to have a bigger purse!!

I do have a great mini-tripod tho!

Thanks for spending so much time in helping everyone.

Hi Ulysses,

Don't know about the dust yet, but haven't seen any so far. I do know that I never experienced that phenomenon with any of my (many past) Sony cameras, so I think there is hope, although this design is pretty different from the others.

Well, luckily, I guess, I probably won't be shooting that much indoors after I leave Okinawa in July. My days of the diplomatic/military/political social whirl will have ended, and I'll go back to just being plain old me, who never goes anywhere :-))

Yes, I sold the S45 about a month ago. I hated the red eye and the dust, but otherwise thought it was a nice little camera. My purse really feels empty (and just too darn light) with no camera in it, and I'm always afraid that I'll come across that "special picture" sans camera (thus I lug the 717 everywhere, which isn't that bad, actually).

Helen
Helen -

That's exactly the point. Particularly when shooting indoors, there
is NO small camera that will produce great results. For that
situation, you need a larger lens, and most importantly much better
LIGHT and control of that light. Otherwise, all small cameras are
going to look very much the same (with the exception of how they
handle things like flash power, white balance, noise, etc.)

I wonder if you'd have less of a reflected dust problem with the
V1. You got rid of your S45, didn't you?

Hi Linda,

I haven't really looked at the Pentax Optio 550, although I recall seeing it in passing. Maybe on my next trip to the camera store (probably this weekend; I can't seem to stay away), I'll check it out.

I can't believe your V1 won't be delivered until the end of June; how could it be here on May 25 but not in the States until over a month later??

It was pointed out to me today that perhaps I should be shooting in ISO 400 for indoor shots. I imagine it would solve a lot of the problems I have experienced at ISO 100, but since I almost always shoot at ISO 100, I just don't think to change the setting. But for you, that would eliminate the necessity to carry a tripod everywhere you go :-).
Thanks, Helen. I am told by Dell my V1 will be shipped June 30th.

No, you're right. I never had a real problem with the size of the F707/F717.

It's nice to be able to put it in your pocket or other small carrying space, but I guess the F717 has a way of making up for its large size by giving such satisfaction.

Still, I think there is going to be some hope for the V1. It's definitely a part of the Cyber-shot family when it comes to image quality and features.

Oh, I definitely think there's hope for the V1. I'm not really disappointed with the camera, but there are other factors causing me to think twice about buying it (cost, especially when undergoing a terribly expensive move; and having a Japan-only warranty that I can only easily use for the next six weeks or so). But you know me; always a sucker for the newest camera! So I suspect when I am able to actually get into my Japanese bank account, I'll probably just go buy it. It will sure beat having to go all the way up to Kitamura Camera every day to take test pics!

Guys,

I've become a real Sony fan, starting with my S70 and continuing through the F707, the F717 and now my new P72...but I'm sorry to say the V1 really disappoints me so far. I'll wait until Phil does a full review before passing judgment, but wow, what a letdown right now.

Here's to whatever replaces the F717!

Todd
Went back to the camera store today for another go at it. They were
kind enough to open up a new box and let me use the battery
(instead of making me buy one). The guy never left my side when I
was outside and kept wanting to look at the LCD (so I had a lot of
distractions and couldn't think much about what I was doing), but I
just shot as much as I could while the battery held out. Excuse the
boring pics! I also shot some more inside; still got some blurry
images, particularly when zoomed. Anyway, hope these help people
decide; I still haven't!

http://www.pbase.com/helenpb/sony_v1_outdoor_test_shots

This time I just uploaded resized (but not sharpened) pics; if
anyone wants some full res ones, just let me know.

Gotta get to work now; I've been playing around long enough with
this camera!

It is only a new introduced digital camera. It was not intended to replace the 717. They are intended for different people and purposes. Sony is not expecting you to sell you 717 and get a cheaper V1!

Uly,

Do you honestly mean that you've not had a problem with the size? No, I know you mean that honestly- erm, to put it another way have you ever kicked yourself that you didn't have a smaller camera?

I've been awaiting the V1 with baited breath (like so many it seems), but I think really I should be getting the 717. It is such good value for money, and will definitely improve upon my qualms with my S45- they are: slow shutter speeds causing blurring in dim light; and poor autofocus in dim light- both due to a small lens.

I know the V1 will suffer the former but I imagine the HAF will improve the latter. I expected the resolution to be excellent with the V1-- however, it seems to my eyes that many of the outdoor sample pics posted on the web suffer from pretty severe purple fringing- in comparison to the 717, at least. I HATE purple fringing- it really annoys me that a lens on a camera can't handle that, but the one in my eye can.

What to do, what to do? If the 717 wasn't the size of a brick, I'd have owned one now for 6 months. I want a camera to be good for my artwork (ie high res. and 'honest' with its colours), good for taking snaps at parties (so p&s), and also good for holiday pics.

Still thinking about a G3.

Maybe I should just get two cameras? A V1 and a 717. It's amazing that you probably could get both for the price of a 717 eight months ago...

That's enough from me. Thank you for listening to me rant. I know you can't tell me what to do; but I wish you could!

Best wishes.

Thanks, Greg, I know that. My statement about looking forward to whatever replaces the F717 wasn't meant the way you took it. I just wish the hot shoe on the F717 would fully support the new flash.

I'm not comparing the V1 images to my F717, I'm actually comparing them to my P72 and I'm just not impressed.

This is sony "style" the V1 is really set at almost the same price as the 717, plus sony is up to the same old tricks concerning the memory sticks,a 1G stick will cost almost as much as the camera so now were at the $1,300 range it's all in the way that sony tries to step outside the box and make you pay more, does anyone remember when sony did the same thing with the Beta vidieo vs VHS, so given they make some good cameras, but watchout because they are great at changing at mid stream and leaving the person to make a choice to buy the next one out because of the memory issue. To be honest it's all about marketing, sony could make a 15 MP camera like yesterday if they wish and could sell the thing for under a $1,000, but where then would they go next? It's not that the technology is not there it's just marketing plain and simple.

Having said all this I will be buying the VI mostly because of the size and the increase memory.

I am sure when Sony announces the 717 replacement the price of that camera will be around the $1200 to $1300 price range. Why would Sony put out a replacement camera for the 717 and only charge $700? It is to compete against the S-50 and the other camera's in this price range.

It could be the photographer, you know ;-)

It's probably not fair to the camera to judge it on my pictures alone, taken under trying circumstances at best without much thought or preparation. I would imagine that whenever Phil does a review of the V1, you'll see some far better images that will give you an idea of what the camera is capable of.

No, I know you mean that honestly- erm, to put it another way have
you ever kicked yourself that you didn't have a smaller camera?
Yeah. Really. I meant it. :-)

You have to remember, I come from the "old school" of guys who thought the F505 was really hot stuff. The F505V was better. And then when the F707 got bigger, I just about bit my own lip off after seeing it. I had no issue with the size. I wasn't self-conscious about carrying it anywhere. Matter of fact, I felt worse when I had it in a case because I always felt like I had it in a gun holster. And THAT made people nervous, especially in elevators.
will definitely improve upon my
qualms with my S45- they are: slow shutter speeds causing blurring
in dim light; and poor autofocus in dim light- both due to a small lens.
I'm not so sure the lens size has anything much to do with it. The V1 has a similarly sized piece of glass, although the lens may look larger due to the armature around it.
sample pics posted on the web suffer from pretty severe purple
fringing- in comparison to the 717, at least. I HATE purple
fringing- it really annoys me that a lens on a camera can't handle
that, but the one in my eye can.
You can get it pretty badly on the F717 shots, too. I've gotten to the point where the only cameras that I would say are characteristically worse than average are the Oly cameras. But most others, Sony included, are all nearly the same in this department.
What to do, what to do? If the 717 wasn't the size of a brick, I'd
have owned one now for 6 months. I want a camera to be good for my

You may be thinking about it way too hard. You need to get away from it all for about a month. Then walk into a Best Buy, and just buy it. :-)

Am I pure ee-vill now? :-)
Maybe I should just get two cameras? A V1 and a 717. It's amazing
that you probably could get both for the price of a 717 eight

Well, the prices aren't quite at the two-fer level just yet. :-)

I'm definitely a believer in the two-fisted brand of shooting. That's what I would do.
