Went back to the camera store today for another go at it. They were kind enough to open up a new box and let me use the battery (instead of making me buy one). The guy never left my side when I was outside and kept wanting to look at the LCD (so I had a lot of distractions and couldn't think much about what I was doing), but I just shot as much as I could while the battery held out. Excuse the boring pics! I also shot some more inside; still got some blurry images, particularly when zoomed. Anyway, hope these help people decide; I still haven't!

This time I just uploaded resized (but not sharpened) pics; if anyone wants some full res ones, just let me know.

Gotta get to work now; I've been playing around long enough with this camera!

The results seem like they came from a P10 with a clearer lens. I guess that's basically what the V1 is. I'm not sure if the added features are worth the extra size. I wish dpreview could do a complete review so we could have a professional opinion.

Thanks for the photos Helen.

I think the outdoors are not as bad as the indoors....but....hmmm....I don't think this is what you have been expecting is it?

Could you post some full sizes ?

I dunno -- it's about what I've always gotten from small Sony cameras -- I didn't have great expectations! I just want a camera that will serve me well enough when I can't bring my 717. Outside is definitely better than indoors, but with such slow shutter speeds in many cases (indoors), what I got was not surprising.

Please let me know which pics you are interested in, and when I get a break here, I'll upload them.

You're welcome. If you didn't see it before, there is another gallery of all indoor shots taken last night at:

I imagine Phil will do a review on it soon. Yes, I agree, it would be good to see what he thinks of it, although I have found over the past few years that the bugs start to emerge only when actual users get their hands on it and really give it a workout!

I remember you had a p9? what happend to it?

I would like to DSC00057.jpg and DSC00046.jpg, as there seems to be some jpg comression distortion (could be because of the resize you did).

Thanks a lot Helen.

I sold it after only two weeks; I really disliked the camera, especially low light performance. Of course, I replaced it with a P7; go figure (but it did seem better to me)!

Will upload those for you ASAP.

Thanks for doing this Helen

If these shots were taken in good light, then there seems to be quite a lot of noise for ISO 100?
(have a look at the sky in both DSC00046.JPG and DSC00057.JPG)

Not sure if I am expecting too much.

Have you tried increasing the ISO setting yet? I didn't see anything but ISO 100 in the EXIFs.

Some indoor/outdoor shots at ISO 400 without flash would be very interesting to see.

Thanks for your good work so far.

Wolf

Thanks, Wolf. I sort of felt somebody had to get some pictures out from this camera, and since I had the opportunity, decided I would take advantage of it. (Well, plus I am thinking of buying it...)

I shoot in ISO 100 almost exclusively, so no, I haven't tried anything else. Maybe if I have another go-round with it, I'll do that (think the camera store will be running out of patience, soon however :-))

Thanks a lot.

In case if you can try the camera again, would you please try to shot at somebody with full zoom (4x) and largest aperture i.e. f4.0?

I am really interested to know if it can have shallow DOF for portrait shots. Thanks a lot.

I wasn't sure whether you had purchased it yet.

If you do get another chance a higher ISO would seem the obvious choice to me for the indoor shots. There is too much ambient light for the flash to be effective, apart from fill in, and the shutter speeds are very slow = risk of blurr/soft focus effect due to hand movements. The higher ISO will allow higher shutter speeds and we also get an opportunity to check the noise levels.

Better not "push it" with the store, though.

I too shoot exclusively with ISO 100 since that is all my S70 will do. The V1 will change that for me I hope. looks like the middle of June before the UK sees any deliveries :-(

Thanks again for your help
Wolf

Helen -

That's exactly the point. Particularly when shooting indoors, there is NO small camera that will produce great results. For that situation, you need a larger lens, and most importantly much better LIGHT and control of that light. Otherwise, all small cameras are going to look very much the same (with the exception of how they handle things like flash power, white balance, noise, etc.)

I wonder if you'd have less of a reflected dust problem with the V1. You got rid of your S45, didn't you?

Yes, you're probably looking too hard. The full story on the noise has not been told. :-)

Stay tuned.
