I thought some of you might want to see some images I took last Saturday with my 10D, 24-70 2.8 L and Qflash with Norman Frosted Dome!

I rarely post over here anymore because I got tired of people bashing equipment all the time but I think these prove the 10D to be a capable tool for my candid work.

Here is a link to a thread I posted on Fred Miranda's site;

B/W lover, but color is seducing me

Nice to hear from both of you again.

A camera is just a tool for me. Nothing more! They all could be better but so could my lighting techniques, my steady hands and my eyes.

I'm shooting like a madman! I setup a studio in my garage and have been shooting beautiful models, ads, babies - you name it and I'm shooting it!

I spent almost $3,000 setting up my garage studio but I've lerned more in a month than I did the past 10 years!

I'm having fun and so are the models I'm working/playing with. It's awseome!

How is the noise level over here? I miss you two but I don't miss the noise!!!!

PS - I still come over here an search out your posts!

They really print up well! The bride and groom are already enjoying a few of them!

DSLR's have come a long way in a short period of time. A 10D for $1500! Pretty slamming if you ask me!

I disagree. I think there is too much angled framing. Each shot looks the same and what bride wants an album full of angled shots? Only a couple should accent the album, not an overwhelming about like this display.

Our 10Ds will be getting their "feet wet" next weekend as my wife and I were asked by a friend to take the shots at a rather informal backyard wedding. The cameras have been top notch in their performance so far so I feel confident they're up to the job. And seeing your shots cinches that feeling. Thanks again.

Hi Mark -

If you read the thread I posted on Fred Miranda you would have seen that I was not the "Paid" photographer. The groom, Kurt, is a fabulous professional photographer and my good buddy. He loves shooting 'Dutch". Sooooooo - for my buddy - I shot a lot of "dutch" candids, knowing the "paid pro" would be getting plenty of the traditionally framed stuff for the bride and groom. My images will just be fill!

The problem with this Forum is that a lot of people are very critical of other's styles and they don't even read the threads. It's why I stopped posting here months ago. I want to contribute but there is more bashing of style than sharing of tools that work, sometimes.

I decided to add some threads because I am so happy with the 10D and 24-70 and this combo has been working out great for me. The Qflash setup rocks!

I don't care if anyone hates my style or my composition but I'd appreciate if people read the threads before passing judgement.

BTW - The bride loved my angled shots - all of them that she has seen and she is hoping I have more which she has not seen!

David,

Great pictures...kudos to you.

Looks like the Wayfarer's Chapel in the Portuguese Bend area of PV (I grew up a few miles from that church). What a beautiful place to get married.

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks for the kudos Mike! That indeed was the Wayfarer's Chapel! A beautiful place for a wedding!

Nice place to grow up too! You lucky dog!

David,

I happened to read the entire thread and all the praise comments you received there and you were probably hoping to receive nothing but the same here. But, sorry I'm honest. I was only stating my own opinion. Also, your thread only states that you were there shooting pics at the the wedding and no where does it say that you weren't the paid pro. So, only one could only assume?

Kurt's Wedding Day

Our very own Kurt Jones tied the knot last night in a small ceremony in Palos Verdes, CA. I feel blessed to have been one of those in attendance along with fellow FM Forum participant John Eckert. The wedding was perfect! Great fun and tons of warmth! I am very happy for Kurt and his most beautiful bride, Breanne! Congrats Kurt – the lucky dog is on the 1st day of his honeymoon at this very moment!

Besides being a truly gifted lensman, Kurt is an awesome person with a huge heart and that East Coast, tell it like it is, attitude. Very refreshing to this So Cal native! I respect him very much! I admire his photo skills and his love of dogs speaks volumes to me. The way he talks about his family and Breanne shows total respect and deep love! Everything that is Kurt reflects in the images he shares here. We are talking true passion.

I captured a few images after the wedding and I figured that some of you might want to share a little bit of Kurt’s wedding day experience!

Again – Congrats to Kurt and thanks for letting my wife Karen and I be a part of your most sacred day!

and

Thanks Bengt - I shot tons of images dutch because Kurt loves and shoots that style, and it was his day, after all!

Take care,
Mark

  • when too much too many, it's like shooting everything with fisheye - the eye gets tired.
but it's just MO... whatever YOU like. Nothing, absolutely nothing matters if you achieved the result YOU wanted.

If you read the entire thread then you missed this post on it

camerapapi wrote:

Very nice series and I do like your style. I am sure the couple was more than happy having you as their photographer. Only one objection; how come you did not stretch that wedding gown away from the bride's back in frame # 10?
William Rodriguez
Miami, Florida.

Thanks William - I was not "THE" Wedding Photog! I am just a bud who brought my camera and grabbed some candids after the ceremony. I did not pose them for any of the shots I took and that's why the wedding gown in image #10 is as is.

I also stated later in the same thread;

The paid photographer's name was Mike and he was a very nice guy who was also very talented. I thanked him for letting me use his setups but stayed out of his way as much as possible. He was glad I was there to get the snatch and grab shots so he could concentrate on the $$$ shots! I'm sure his images will rock!

And then I posted this in the same thread;

Here are a few more images in case Kurt shared this link with friends and family. These should hold people over until the professionally captured images arrive from the wedding photographer, Michael.

And what about this quote from me in the same thread;

Thanks for telling it like it is Mitchell! I always appreciate that!

The groom shoots a lot of "dutch"! It's his style and he does it better than I do! I like his work very much but try to never copy anyone. I did the tilts for him and he emailed me and thanked me for considering his "bent" vision!

BTW - I like the tilts on some of the images and have incorporated those shots in all my shoots for quite some time. I just don't shoot the majority of the images in "dutch" like I did for Kurt!

So to you - Mark - flame on! I'm glad you were able to get a few flames in on me! That's why this forum is less valuable than it once was. To say I'm digging for praise is ridiculous!

Having read this forum and being a participant for the past two years I figured some might like to see images taken with a 10D, 24-70 and a good flash! I could care less if you read only what you want to read and then claim I never disclosed I wasn't the paid pro at the event! Whatever makes you feel better!
