What "pocket" camear to accompany 10D?

In my opinion, you have the high MP 10D so anything else is a compromise. If you wanted 5 mp shots you would take the 10D. What you want is a small camera. For me it would be the canon 230, small, light, uses compact flash like the 10D and captures 3.2 mp . I don't see an extra $100 for the 400 to get an extra mp and a little more zoom (okay, longer movies too). If i didn't have the 10d, then the 400, with the 10d...S230

What pocket sized digital camera suggestions do you suggest looking
at, to accompany my 10D on those days when you just don't feel like
lugging around the weight....

-examples of those which are small, but still give good picture
quality (manual abilities are not a necessity)

-examples of those which are compact, but also have manual
abilities (apperture/shutter priority) and give half decent pictures

I also have a 2500. As one can surmise from Phil's review, it really IS a pocket camera - the lens is well protected in a real pocket. Be careful to keep your fingers off the lens.

Advantages: good macro. good pix given enough light. Uses CF card. Battery life not a problem, charger uses same cord as 10D.

Disadvantages: The anti-reflective coating on the viewscreen is wearing off. Lens is slow. Flash is adjacent to lens, major red eye. Too small and light for some shots (shake).

Would like to see a review of the 3500. A follow-on with a faster lens and sensor with 10D noise would be nice. IMO the camera could grow slightly, allowing for a faster lens, and still fit in the pocket.

On a huge stroke of luck, I ran into a Nikon Coolpix 2500 on
clearance at my local Target for $119 with 20% additional off for
being an opened box, and another 10% for registering for their
charge card. Can't remember my final price, but after the $50
rebate, it'll be almost free.

I'm really impressed with the photos it takes, and it's quite
small... though it only has an LCD for the viewfinder, which is a
bit quirky and hard to see in bright sunlight.

Anyway, if you can find a similar deal, you can't beat the price.

What is this obsession with batteries? The battery for the S400 is about the size and weight of a Mercedes car key. I can put one in my pocket and completely forget it's there. If you really want something pocketable, I don't think choosing something that will require you to tote along an extra four or eight AA's is the right way to go.

I suppose if the pocket digicam accepted 10D batteries, it would be
alright. But I think only the G2/3 series uses the same batteries
as the 10D

We agree yet again. I don't know how many Gold Dots I've launched at targets. I pretty much started carrying Gold Dots in all my carry guns after our department done the research and chose it to issue to all officers. I also use them for practice. If you shoot enough and really get a feel for shooting you can tell that there are differences between brands as far as recoil, report, point of impact, etc... I really want my actions to match my practice if I ever need to use my guns under stress so I like to elmiinate as many variables as possible.

Ya know, if one of us ever makes it to the other's home state we really need to hook up. One can never have too may paper punching buddies. Give me a heads up if you ever head anywhere close to the Atlanta, Georgia area. The range time will be on me. :-)

Thanks for the offer.

I've been through Atlanta airport once. Well, twice (return trip went through there, too).

Gold Dot, huh?

I've been using Federal Premium 125gr JHP in mine

They call it Hydra-Shock there, but it's not really Hydra-Shock.

They have Hydra-Shock in 158gr, I think.

Same camera as s50, except less MP. This is a welcome trade off though as there is less noise, which in my opinion is more important unless you plan on doing some serious cropping or enlarging. I havn't seen any oter P&S with less noise (or even equal). I would get one if you can still find one..."its an oldie, but a goodie!"

Not true, The Nikon 3100 takes AAs' and is pocketable. I still say go with the Pentax though.
You won't find a true pocketable camera that takes AA's.
OK... let me re-phrase my needs again

I am looking for a pocket sized digital camera that takes AA NIMH
batteries (if possible) with at least 3X optical zoom, and at least
3 MP (perferably 4+ MP). Manual abilities is not a necessity, but
picture quality, size and 3X optical zoom is a must, Compact Flash
memory usage and also preferably one that takes AA NIMH batteries
if possible. Price is also an issue. I probably do not want to
spend anymore then $400-500.

Well... not obsession with batteries, but I have a surplus of AA NIMH that I like to make use of. Don't want to have another 3rd standard of battery.

I suppose if the battery life is good on a camera, it would be fine. Its just that my last small digicam was a Canon S10, and boy was it a battery hog. I'd be luck to get 20-30+ shots with LCD on.

It seems that all these tiny digicams don't seem to offer any shutter/apperture priority/manual features... Anyone know what is the smallest one that does?

I suppose that AA support is not important, but long battery life is though.

Do any "small" pocket digicam offer shutter/apperture priority?

Do you work for Canon DavidP? :) j/k

Does Canon offer the best in this case over the other brands?

Felphamlad-I am in just your quandry, dipping into buying a pocket camera that gives me what I consider the basics. I have spent a year looking and researching, which is why this site is a Godsend. Time is on our side they are getting better and cheaper and Foveon for compacts is only 18 months away. Will follow this thread since others have had a good headstart.
