My NEX-6 is only about a month old. Until now, I have thought that connecting via Wi-Fi is a fairly useless feature for me. In fact, the camera shop sales rep told me that WiFi on the NEX-6 wasn't fully baked and should be ignored.

What I really wanted was to copy directly to my iPhone when no Wi-Fi is available. Now I discover that I can and the feature works great. The NEX-6 acts as its own wireless access point (WAP). Now I can easily backup and email photos from the field as long as I have a cellular connection enabled for data as well as voice.

Download the free iOS app, PlayMemories Mobile to the iPhone. In the Playmemories settings on iPhone you can select the resolution of the copied photos: VGA, 2Mpixel, or Original.

On the NEX-6, Menu->Playback->View on Smartphone.

On the iPhone, connect to the NEX's wireless network using the SSID and password supplied by the camera. Then run the PlayMemories app. The SSID and password always remains the same so the iPhone will connect the next time with no data entry required.

Very nice!

ok THAT i didn't know. Geez

I've been figuring ways of getting SD card readers into iphone...etc. Couldn't find anything, Wasn't aware of this. Helps TREMENDOUSLY while out in the field.

Please note that it copies a lower resolution jpeg to the phone, not raw or full resolution jpeg (as far as I know).

That's not entirely the case. Go into the app settings, you can choose to have it transfer full res jpegs. It does not transfer RAW, however. If you shoot only RAW it will down sample the image on transfer. Best to shoot RAW + jpeg if you are going to use this method.

Jesper, in the settings for the iOS PlayMemories app one can select Original resolution, which I assume is what it says it is. You would only want Original to use the iPhone as a image backup. 2Mpix setting is sufficient for sending in any email and displaying on a recipient's monitor.

I did not know that. Thanks for the info!

Wow. This is awesome.

Exactly the functionality I had imagined when I bought the camera....nice to see how easy it is to execute.

I'm really impressed that the camera creates its own wifi network. So much easier than trying to work it the other way around without a touch screen.

Does it transfer the RAW files or just JPGs?

It's a very well known feature, but it's horribly clunky in practice.

How do you do that.? I have nothing more than basic copying functions available.
You need to download the remote app to your NEX-6 to use the iPhone as a remote. It's a nifty little tool, too bad it only shoots JPEG.

On the phone: you need the PlayMemories app, which is free on Google Play or iTunes store.

On the NEX-6: you need the Smart Remote Control app, which is free. You get that by going to the menu, then select "Application" and "Play Memories Camera Apps". You'll need to have set up your WiFi connection, which you can find under "Settings" toward the bottom.

Solid explorer allows you to copy any files from your SD Card including RAW. You need to get a mini-USB card reader (they're around $2 on dx.com). I haven't seen any 95MB/s transfer SD Cards that do wifi as well.

The RAW comment was pointing towards the fact that the use of the Playmemories remote app causes NEX to default ti JPG even if you had RAW or RAW+JPG selected.

Does it take anyone else about 3-4 minutes for their NEX 6 to connect with iphone 5 (it does for me)? Once it's connected it works fine, but wow, it takes forever to connect.
I should clarify, the long connection time is when I'm using the smart remote app. I have no issues transferring photos to my iPhone.
