What Digital Camera review the A58

The tests lately tell not even close to the whole story behind the sensor..even here it states around 2600lines resolution at 100iso...and holds to 2100 at 16,00 iso.

here is probably a more reliable resolution test 2900 lines of resolution...
here is probably a more reliable resolution test 2900 lines of resolution...

even at 1600iso the a57 looks a bit less than 2100lines compared to 2100 at 16,00 iso for the a58 according to their test...
even at 1600iso the a57 looks a bit less than 2100lines compared to 2100 at 16,00 iso for the a58 according to their test...

and the a55 will have a cleaner sharper image with more resolution than the a57 up to around 400iso then the jpeg engine starts 'killing resolution for noise control...

The a58sensor has more resolution, the colors look more natural, less sharpening artifacts on the a58. Obviously the noise control with the bionz sensor between the a55-a57 did wonders at high iso ...The a58 has an improved processor and more mps...more resolution all around.(and noise control)

Unless you want to shoot 16,000 iso all day long at 15 frames a second(and detail will be smeared or non-existant)..the a58 is going to put out better iq . If you shoot over 3200iso for regular shooting and the jpegs look just a bit too noisy, well then have fun and i am sure a noise free blob of tree leaves at 3200 iso is within reach at this very moment(no noise woo-hoo)

Sorry for being a wiseguy..the camera is going to be more/as capable than every alpha out there except the a99 in all around performance and iq ...and if you need the reach even more capable than the a99 in many situations.

If you need a nicer back screen or more frames a second then no its not......true story, brian

On the A57 with its high res LCD you can easely see if your pic is in focus, not so sure with the A58

not true :-) A58 screen still good (it's twice more the dots than A37 screen)

and you get the better higher res oled EVF on the A58 which should make MF better

A lot of people are saying that the a58 picture quality is better, so I was just wandering if the picture quality of the a57 with the new 18-55 II kit lens attached would be equal to the a58. Or is the sensor just that much better on the a58?

Thanks

btw, I have an a57 that I am very happy with atm.

I also have an A57, and the A58 is deffently an downgrade to the A57. In my country the A58 is also much cheaper

There's a few folks with this A55>A57 IQ thing, but it's never been proven out. The A55 doesn't have more resolution. It's the same sensor as the A57, and the differences in JPEG processing are relative to settings, not affecting RAW at all. The sample you show there gives the A57 a clear edge in the comparo-DPR images.

The A58 may well be superior at higher ISO, but we've yet to see actual apples to apples tests to conclude that; anything else is pure conjecture.

Features and performance wise, the A58 is simply not an upgrade to the A57, as has been pretty well established on all relevant discussion forums, threads and articles. That doesn't mean it's not good or worth buying, but for many A57 owners it's not a compelling or upward purchase.

http://www.digicamdb.com/compare/sony_slt-a55-vs-sony_slt-a57/ The a55 has a 16.2mp sensor..same as the a580 . I am not really praising the a55 in comparison but resolution and the newer bionz processor make a difference. Popular photography just reviewed the a57 saying resolution is sub-par for sensor size. Its lower due to noise control...and raw processing will give even more resolution with the a55 than 2900. The a57 is run through raw to even get to 2400 lines of resolution. But unless you want to process raw files with the a55 the a57 puts alot cleaner images with the newer jpeg engine. Knowing the differences the bionz processor made between the two, the a58 should have excellent performance with an 'up-dated' processor and keeping resolution high throughout every iso.

I could care very little about high iso honestly, it would be nice to see an alpha put out iq at 800iso that can stand toe to toe(or close) with the a57/a55 at 100iso....without having to raw process.

The a57 is a great camera..i like the punchier sharper jpegs and cleaner high iso from the camera. As for if it is an up-grade...probably not enough and waaay too many 'comprimises to bother. (for a57 owners)

I wouldnt trade my a55 for an a57 either....but if i shot 800iso and up often then i would. I think a replacement for the a57/a65/a77 is on the horizon. I dont feel the need to upgrade but i think the a58 is really going have stellar iq and capabilities.

No need to justify anything some alphas do some things nicer/easier/better than others. Different bodies for different wants/needs. If i shot landscapes at 100iso i would have a 16mp ccd alpha or an a65 and it would be 'the best camera' for me . If i shot action mostly(kids, sports) the a57 would be the 'best camera' for me. So sorry so long winded i think the a58 is somewhat the best of both worlds minus...the 'accesories' so to speak....thanks,brian

Considering this thread refers to the A58, I find it amusing that the same suspects with A57's rock up to defend their choices. Some people seem to want to use every opportunity available to say "I have an A57 and it is better/ just as good, so there..!"

Take it easy guys, no one is putting down the A57. It is a great camera with a great sensor.

Buying a back up / cheap vacation camera recently I went for the A58. Could have easily got the 57. I personally prefer the EVF of the 58. It works great. No regrets. Can't imagine any camera beating it for the price.

anyway, give it another year or so and something new and non SLT will be tempting us.

I'm really looking forward to see what Sony's new camera tech will be - time to start saving I think!

A58 scores lower than A57 on Senscore , not by a lot, but still. :-|
Would not give much weight to a site that says "Sony continues to fall behind in APS-C class sensor performance".
Probably because Sony at one point had the best APS-C sensors while now the Toshiba sensors are clearly the best with Nikon being equal or better than Sony depending on sensor rating lab.

DxO puts the A57 ahead as well.
