What do you all think about his one? I like the idea of a small dSLR that would fit in my purse, although not at the $800 price. But I can wait a few months till the price drops.

Even at this price I suspect it will sell like crazy so if you're waiting for a price drop it may be more than a few months.

But still, the body alone is smaller than the Panasonic GH3 and only slightly larger than the Olympus OM-D. For carrying around a smaller, lighter package than the 7D, it seems not bad at all (and all my lenses fit).

Exactly. I have a Fujifilm X-E1. The "kit lens" is small compared to the kit lens that comes with the Canon (and L quality). The 35 mm f1.4 is a joy and my new 14 mm f2.8 is equally compact and of the highest quality.

I love it. Finally a true spiritual successor to the very tiny Canon XT back in 2005-2006. A small toss-able fun camera that you can take it anywhere.

I hated the BLOAT/FAT/LARD on T3i/T4i/T5i. If I want a Big Camera, I buy a 60d. I'm glad Canon is going back to its original root.

Like you, I'm not going to buy it at $800, but I'll pick one up 6-8 months later at cheaper price. I'm really impressed by the new 18-55 STM kit lens and the FACT that it is INTERNAL FOCUS, just like my Canon 70-200mm F4 IS. Put on an UV Filter and the lens is sealed practically from dust. I like that.

I`ll likely get one to replace my worn out 550D which has done nearly 3 years of backup duty, events etc for work .... the 100D's smaller body makes it easier to pack for backup (the days of carrying 2 1 series bodies around are long gone), I can pocket the 550D body in a big coat, the 100D makes it easier .

This camera is what the EOS-M should have been given canon`s inability to do sensor based AF properly on APS-C

Gets the thumbs up from me if the Price is right

yeah, I can relate. Don't forget the 580ex flash, 8xAA batteries, and a 8 cell chargers in a big camera bag.

Isn't EOS-M rather pointless at this point? There is no improvement in Canon Live View CDAF speed, and probably won't be for a long time. Doesn't the existance of 100d spill the eventual death of EOS-M???

No, different kind of user.

Yeah, they`re called NEX / Microfourthirds / NX users ...

those who want a small EOS will get the 100D . the EOS-M is likely to be the shortest lived mirrorless system ever (though both Pentax Q and Nikon-1 should have been stillborn) .......... unless they perform the miracle of getting it as fast as the fastest Panasonic G series of course - though I can`t see that

Ah, wait 'till you see M2.

Many buyers outside the enthusiast/pro camp are looking for a small and uncomplicated camera that will deliver in all situations (including sports & parties).

The 100D is right on the spot; as a 650D owner I have no doubt this camera is capable of getting good pictures and movies in almost all common situations. The increased hybrid AF area makes movie snaps even more easy.

The size shrinking is an art in itself, I admire the Canon engineers that pulled this off. If it were physically possible to cramp some kind of mirror mechanism behind an EOS-M mount then they might even pull off a lens shrink in the coming years. Call it wishful thinking...

We`ve been waiting for decent sensor AF since the 450D back in 2008 and the EOS-M is still laughable AF wise compared to Panasonic`s 2008 camera - the G1 - and panasonics got a LOT faster since then..

I really think that the 100D is the answer to this, they seem to have thrown their hands up and said "OK, we can`t do it so here`s a tiny DSLR" - kinda like the opposite of the Pentax K01 with hopefully for canon the opposite effect (as in it`ll be a HIT rather than a massive flop) .. Nikon need to drop the silly 1 series (all of which are blown out of the water by a Sony P&S with the same size sensor) and do the same .

Hmmmmhhhh... why not get rid off the mirror?'.....
Because that`s the bit which makes it all work for canon .... . otherwise they`d end up with an EOS mount Pentax K01 and we all know what a disaster that was !

I prefer optical viewfinders because:
- I feel more "in" the scene
- I can see/predict the right moment more reliably
- OVF focus is darn fast, also in low light
- EVF's drain the battery

The only thing I like about EVF is the "what-you-see-is-what-you-get" effect, but that is also delivered by the live view screen at the back. So the Canon approach with OVF and live view is kind of "best of both" for me. Maybe your preference differs; to each their own.

That is my thinking as well. 100D = canon way of saying they're given up on making CDAF faster. If there was going to be an M2, it will be based on the Live View system found in T5i.

Looking @the T5i/700d preview. As quoted by DPR, there is NOTHING NEW in hardware wise, and the CDAF Live View speed of T5i is just as slow as the current T4i and EOS-M1.

If there is ever going to be a M2, it'll probably be nothing more than a M1 with Software Filter, just like T5i is a T4i with more creative filters.

Yep - the 700D = 550D Mark IV . lets face it all the series has gained since the 550D is more cross sensors (which few of the target market will use and if like the 60D will be pretty unreliable anyway) a worse than useless flippy screen (Flip screens need decent CD-AF to be useful), worse because the LCD panel unprotected like the 550D`s fixed one and it scrunches up the buttons on the RH side -- err and stereo Mics . not a lot in 3 years, especially given the LCD Downers ..

The 100D however brings a really welcome size drop into the equasion - welcome to a working hack in need of a light backup body anyway - no need to carry lens adapters and hope the AF locks before nightfall ;-)

No agree. On my 650D the AF on the flippy screen mostly serves my needs (thank you very much :-p ).

Ha! At daylight it will. After nightfall it won't.
