If you looking at buying a G3 READ THIS.
I have been a keen photographer for a few years now and have finally decided to upgrade from my old Kodak Dc4800 digital camera to the G3. I also have been shooting with a manual SLR for a couple of years.
-First of all the G3 is not an SLR but does exhibit some SLR like features.
-Image quality is EXCELLENT a massive improvement over my old Kodak Dc4800!
-Control layout is easy to use and navigate. Male users will like the layout compared to say a Sony f717 which feels cramped in it's layout.
-The LCD screen is absolutely fantastic, forget about using the viewfinder! Using two eyes gives a better sence of depth anyway and with the clarity of the LCD their should be no reason to use the viewfinder.
-The LCD also has a very fast refresh rate, when comparing to the Sony F717's LCD the G3 is superior in speed and sharpness. (Funny considering the specs are similar, as written in the dpreview their is definetely some sub-pixel trickery going on) Magic stuff!
-Image quality is SUPERB I can effectively upsize images to full A3 photo quality using Photoshop Software IMPRESSIVE, negating the need for more megapixels
- Construction is good but not as well built as say the Olympus C5050 (Feels solid enough though) hence the .5 drop above
-Features are impressive again for a compact digicam. I love the ability to roll the jog dial and display equivalent shutter speed and apertures
-The extra lenses are also well enough built and give fantastic results.
Generally:
- Shadow detail is very good.
- Images are crisp and show good colour detail
OVERALL:
I am positive I made the right decision in buying the G3.
One day I'll own a digital SLR (Nothing beats DOF preview through a large viewfinder) but the G3 is a great compromise for the price.
Problems:
When using Manual focus and jog dial (Canon refer to this as their 'Main dial') it doesn't always register.
I have edited this review to say the jog dial seems to have 'broken in' and is now working without hesitation.
-Low light autofocus can be slow (Although using the manual focus fixes this situation)
-4:3 aspect ratio means some cropping in 6x4 / 5x7 prints
It would have been nice for Canon to include a 3:2 aspect ratio...
