Still on the fence about Samyang 7.5mm

Hello there!

I own a Panasonic 7-14mm but I have been curious about Samyang 7.5mm for at least 6 months. I don't mind the manual focus as I have two Voigtlander lenses. A fisheye lens looks so fun to use but I already have the UWA lens, 7-14mm.

Can someone convince me to get the Samyang?

Thank you

Go on, just do it! You know you want to. Because you are worth it. You DESERVE one.

Does that help?

I want one!

Thanks. I have been looking at all the sites relating to Samyang.... want one but I am not sure if I should save the money for something else. e.g. Camera upgrade from GH1 to something new.

But... Samyang is so cheap yet so good!!! This addiction to lenses needs to stop!!!! :(

With the 7-14mm you don't NEED the Samyang.

Still, it will give you a new way to see the world, not to mention your fingers.

2 caveats:

1. Opposed to what many say about DOF, the Samyang is sharp enough to show on which distance it is focused. And much worse, on which it is not.

2. The FE is not easy to focus because of the large DOV. Even my 2,8/28 MF lens is easier to focus.

These points seem to be contradictory, but practice shows it is more some sort of circulus vitiosus.

Peter.

PS: I like my Samyang very much!!

It is a ridiculously good lens for the price. Really spectacularly sharp. Sharp enough that it handles a whole range of de-fishing very well that allows you to tune the distortion to taste in post processing.

Two ways to look at owning it along with the 7-14:

1. I've already got the 7-14, why do I need a fisheye?

2. I've already got the 7-14, so I must love UWA and would enjoy a fisheye.

The Samyang is one of those lenses that I don't think many will tell you not to get, even if practically you don't need it. I don't use mine very often, but I always enjoy using it.

Maybe I might find enough money under my sofa....such a difficult decision to make.

My Rokinon branded version just arrived on Tuesday, but I'm already in love. If you're planning on defishing, stick with the 7-14. But if you want a little lens that alters reality, get the 7.5. Jmho.

WOW!!!!!!

As I said. Just buy it. Even if you are not into Fisheye or UWA, this is one of the best Lenses for M43.

Paired with a Flash (with a diffuser) it even is a great Lens to shoot your family on a day out in a museum.

it is permanently mounted on my IR modified E-P2. I think I will buy another one and glue this one on. :-)

Buying the lens is not an issue. I just wish I could buy Dirk's photographic skills. He sure knows how to use the little Samy!

Hyperfocal distance is somewhere around 1 meter wide open. So its easy to shoot. Still, I like it more on my GH3 than in my GH1 because with GH3 i can look through the EVF and focus by magnification area and move that magnified area touching the screen. Very quick and powerfull tecnique.

Btw closest focus distance is less than one inch from lens surface so with Samyamg you can take very intresting shallow dof pictures :)

Thanks, but seriously, I mostly just walk around with that thing and use it like a snapshooter. And as I just set it to infinity it is really quick to shoot some hundreds of images. Sometimes I am lucky and have something like the pics I posted.

I bought it on an Amazon Gold Box deal but eventually sold it on.

Everybody is right: it's a super sharp lens and a great value, but it still locks up $250 that you could spend on something else. If you already own the 7-14, any marginal sharpness improvement from the 7.5 doesn't really seem worth the money.

I wound up spending the same money on an FL-600R flash, which improves my indoor photography tremendously. The 7.5 was more of a novelty.

Obviously, YMMV.

Yes, buy it! It also works in portrait mode! Here are two from last week end:
