In the instructions for installing the firmware updates it states to provide a formatted card. The question I have is, formatted with the computer or with the camera? I have tried both ways and receive different results. With the camera formatting, besides the update file, I also receive a DCMI file. If I format with the computer I receice the update file only. Which is the correct formatting? Why do I even get a DCMI file? I would appreciate your help on this, thank you.

Format the card using the camera.

Format in the camera, turn camera off, remove the card, place in computer, copy the firmware file as indicated in the instructions, safely remove the card from the computer and shove it into the camera.....

The camera will check the integrity of the firmware prior to applying it and complain if it does not like what you have done. Its not rocket surgery.

I usually format SD card in the camera, then put it in computer, delete DCMI file, and copy an update.

As others have indicated, it is easier and probably more reliable to format the card in the camera although you can do it either way. When you format in camera, a "DCIM" folder is created. The camera will store any images you take in sub-folders of DCIM (Digital Camera IMages). When a computer formats the card, it doesn't create a DCIM folder because it treats the card as a mass storage device just like a disk drive.

Do not place firmware updates in the DCIM folder. They must go into the root directory of the card or the camera won't find them.

I formatted the cf card in my D many times and the camera still retains the updated firmware because i have checked this each time just to make sure.

I have always formatted the card on the computer, then just drag the *.bin file from the computer to the card, then stick the card in the camera and proceed to update the FW.
