I just purchased an EF to NEX adapter off of ebay

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Electronic-...744&pid=100015&prg=1006&rk=1&sd=200822676987&

after doing some research on the company that produces them on their chinese website, I convinced myself to buy one as I had just bought the Canon 100mm f2.8L IS USM Macro also.

The seller emails me regarding if I wanted to upgrade for an extra $25 for AF, which I took. I saw the Metabones adapter for almost $400 with no AF but I figured to give this guy a chance...

O can always return it if I should not like it...

I will keep you all posted as if this product works as promised and upload a video of it as well when I receive it next week.

But anyone already use the Canon 100mm Macro? Thoughts? Sugestions?

It will be interesting to hear your observations on this. I would assume a macro lens is going to be slow focusing, but I have no experience with Canon gear to know this for a fact. It would be interesting if you could test this with another lens. With the cost of the Sony 24mm, I think finding a Canon 24mm would be the lens to add. Maybe a Sigma 10-20mm as the Sony 10-18mm at almost $900 is pretty expensive.

Thank you
Russell

I just watched a DigitalRev video on youtube and this lens focuses really fast (on a canon at least). I personally bought this lens for IS that the non L didn't have. I personally like to MF but for only $25 why not take the upgrade? Oh, btw, I already have the Zeiss 24 too.

I'm going to be looking into buying an UWA lens next for a possible trip to Tashkent, Uzbekistan in December.

If you're interested in the video

Below is the email from that same user when I asked if his adaptor is AF support. Anyway, please let us know when your adaptor arrives.

I used to own the old Canon 100 with out IS and it was a great lens for macro. Are you talking about the new Canon 100mm with IS?

=======================

Dear mrkhong,
Thanks for the message... No, AF is not supported...
btw, do you use NEX camera, or DV ? auto focus is hardly used when used with DV anyway... any for NEX camera (NEX-3,5,7), the 'manual assit' makes manual focusing a lot easier ...
Even AF is implemented, the focusing speed is hardly comparable to the original phase detect AF supported through original NEX mount lenses...

best,
R.J.

Very interesting and I will be very interested in your thoughts on this. I'll be looking out for your posts on it mate. For an extra $25 for AF, yep I would have done exactly the same thing ;-)

A few thoughts going through my head with AF and the CDAF in the NEX. Might be slow but in a lot of cases, it doesn't matter really.

The other thing that enters my tiny mind, is I wonder what AF will be like on the NEX-6 with PDAF on the sensor. Interesting one Alex.

Canon has some excellent lenses that the NEX lacks, no doubt about that at all. With the Canon 100mm I wouldn't use AF anyway for macro work. But thats just me. The Canon FD 100mm macro was a top macro lens and I imagine the AF version would be the same.

All the best and this is an interesting one to watch. Good on you.

Danny.

Saw a review of this EF adapter:

Seems a little finicky, but the video has some good tips to get this to work with the NEX-7. Definitely seems promising. Please post your experiences.

Below is the email he sent me:

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the purchase and payment... btw, we now also have the new version of this adapter, which will allow AF (auto focusing) for original native EOS lenses ! (focusing speed is faster than SONY LA-EA1, slower than the new LA-EA2)... All other features of this adapter remains the same. Do you want to give it a try ? the AF version does cost $25 extra though..

BTW this is the Chinese site that the company runs I believe. They have various adapters there and lists and descriptions for each. You might be interested in taking a look

Just have the page translated

Edit: They have 25 adapters for the NEX line!

Hi ChefAlex,

Any updates on your new NEX > ESO adapter?

Thanks,
Yes, I've returned it. Here are my issues with it:
  • Af was spot on only 15% of the time, usually would just focus to infinity and stop.
  • AF was VERY SLOW!
  • You wouldn't be able to use DMF
  • No DOF preview with live view
  • Aperture blades don't physically adjust while adjusting them through camera, they would adjust when you pressed the shutter button
  • In MF, focusing was difficult because the aperture was always fully open, until the photo was taken
Otherwise, build quality was excellent and technically, AF and Aperture worked but not how it would work with native NEX lenses

...with the Conurus smart adapter (FW ver. 03) aperture has two modes of operation, depending on the status of the Menu settings: Setup --> LV Display --> Setting Effect:
  • set to ON - iris closes to selected value as soon as it is set by Av dial;
  • also IS activated if lens is stopped down even one click from the wide open position (at wide open position IS is active only as long as 1/2-press is active = exactly as on any EOS body), which is handy in some situations, but of course eats batteries like mad :(
  • set to OFF - iris closes to a preset value only upon 1/2-press, exactly like you've described with "your" adapter;
  • also IS is activated only by 1/2-press;
it would be interesting to know how does it work with the R.J. adapter?
