My First PAID Model Shoot (+pics)

I think that's a great shot. Her smile is something else. I bet that lady has some stories she could tell us all and some lessons we could learn from her.

Your model was a lot more difficult than those that Paul uses. With all the young men around here I don't find it surprising that pretty girl pictures get a lot more attention, but the world is not full of young, pretty people, whether guys or gals. So it's nice to see some candid shots.

Olga
I paid her to strike a pose. I gave her $3.00 + a bottle of water
she requested. Her feet were rotting and she smelled bad.

She was very friendly and told me her hair was a mess.
I told her she looked great. Then I snapped 3 pics of her.

Mini

Sad, and somehow inspiring. Despite her obvious hardships she still manages to smile and do so without apology or embarrassment. Looks as though she's been homeless for some time.

There but for the grace of God go I!

Whatever caused her current circumstances, be it alcohol, mental disorder, drugs, whatever - we are all lucky to have escaped so dire a predicament. I'm not saying she doesn't bear responsibility for her circumstances or that our efforts to help wouldn't actually worsen the problem which I believe. I am saying that we've all been awfully lucky in the genetic lottery.

Hello,

I find this picture very engaging. The smile is bright and full and genuine looking. The eyes have sparkle.

The pose and the wardrobe (what she is wearing) tell us a story. Her feet must pain her yet she smiles.

She is wearing a nice outfit with a necklace...she looks likes she does care about her appearance and her sense of dignity. She is erect and standing tall (not hunched in a corner). She has confidence it appears.

And, even her feet are in a classic "ballet" position for balance and poise.

Overall, I think she is an excellent portrait subject and I do like this pic. The subject (the woman) in this case is what makes this an interesting photo and something more than a snapshot.

What I don't like is the insensitive comments and mocking that some of the forum members here show in their comments. Their comments tell us all something about how they see people, how they consider others less fortunate than themselves, and something about their own hearts.

Occasionally, some people ask me why I don't post some of my own pics on a forum like this. Frankly, it is because I don't want to subject my own clients/subjects to the same juvenile commentary that some make about women (or any type of person they don't like).

TO the photographer: I think you have a responsibility for the use of this photo. When it becomes a subject of mockery and comments in poor taste, I believe you should "pull it" or delete it. How would you feel if your own mother's photo received such poor comments? Surely you respect your subjects enough to not make them a laughing stock?

Sincerely,
Steadman

--Mini, let me give you a piece of advice: Never ever lie to your model.
You are supposed to be their mirror in the shooting.
And: You don't need to say that her feet were rotting and she smelled bad,
the picture its supposed to speak for it self.
I like the picture, and I love her smile.

I'm serious. You never know. She doesn't have much, but maybe she doesn't need much. Look at us, working hard just to get another piece of glass or magnesium alloy. Whining about focus-schmocus.

She may have all she needs right there: something in the carriage and a peace of mind, and this long empty road in front of her.
This may be one of the most artistic threads here, without mini-me realising it.

Steadman,

I disagree with you on this. If everyone pulled a shot because of immature, or inconsiderate comments, what would we be left with?

I think it's more appropriate to point out inappropriate responses to those who just don't "get it."

Olga

(in fact this is the first time) but I wouldn't pull my mother's picture if a few people made fun of it and I'm sure she wouldn't want me to. The rude comments are a reflection of the person making them, not the model. "Put your head up, carry it high and walk on" she would say.

Now that I've set you straight =)) let me say 'tis good to see a post from you. Haven't seen any in a while but then the character of this forum seems to have changed - most likely a reflection of the dramatic price reduction in Canon's entry level prosumer digital offering.

Describing the transaction as pay, implies a professional respect, which is negated by the smelly feet comment.

I like the picture very much. It captures this enigma of a lady in a world of hert choice or in a world of disorder, against her choice.

she smiles, because she's thinking about you needing expensive gear to realize nivana.

she smiles because she's gonna have $3 to spend

she smiles because she wants to show you she can smile over her pain

she smiles because she's out of her mind and thinks you are the Messiah!

However, its not appropriate as a professional or decent guy/gal to use the homeless/street people as object of derision.

you set up the openings for cracks about her with comments on feet rotting or the smell.

I dont think her feet are rotting. She has varicose veins and ankle edema. Her feet are more comfortable in the slippers.

by her dress and beads I would guess that she may well be recently released from a hospital, dispossessed of her home or be psychotic or depressed and simply wandered away from her family and home.

Concerning the release: I doubt whether it would have any standing as there is a great chance that she was/is incompetent to sign away any personal rights in her condition.

Stiill, as I said, I enjoyed the picture. Perhaps you might present it less about your triumph and leave the interpretaion to the viewer.

I was amazed by her. She was smart and could carry on a great conversation. She cared about her looks and she kinda blew my mind.

I really wanted to get a picture of her. I drove by her 3 times before I stopped. I asked he permission to take a picture and she said yes. I would have given her more money if I had it on me.

Because I was standing close to her and those things were over whelming to me. I pointed them out to give the picture empahasis. I was not saying those things to be funy or to make fun.

I actually felt incredibly sorry for her. But I left with respect.
She impressed me. Did you notice the large diamond ring on her finger?

Well Mini-me, glad you didn't take offense by my comments.

Your picture is actually good enough to not require the added comments...trust your composition to speak for you!

Maybe it is a diamond on her ring; could be junk.........that is part of it all...an enigma....a lady stuck in a strange world!

It's not just 10D's that miss focus, some people’s minds are out of focus, and I'm not referring to the lady in the Photo but how people perceive her, her eyes tell me she has a heart of corn, Thanks for sharing this Photo Mini-me , she reminds me of my Mother who died an alcoholic, she also had a heart of gold.

I don’t find the humor some of this board has expressed in response to the photo.

I don’t feel the original posters intention was to capture the character of this lady, but instead was trying to make himself feel big at her expense. The fact that he captured a very interesting image was coincidental (or at least secondary to the motive of serving himself).

I don’t like the posters lack of respect for others. He also seems to always try to create a shock-value in order to draw attention to himself.
You seem to be enjoying making fun of that homeless woman as if she
is a clown.

Do you know her? Do you know what circumstances lead her to such life?

Don't make fun of people. You reversals of fortune do happen.
