I paid her to strike a pose. I gave her $3.00 + a bottle of water she requested. Her feet were rotting and she smelled bad.

She was very friendly and told me her hair was a mess.
I told her she looked great. Then I snapped 3 pics of her.

I admire her.

How wrapped up do we get about trivial things we miss what is really important?

I'm going so deep. my feet are out of focus!
What a tragic person. How she smiles when she's in such a state
I'll never know.

That's a fine lady. I was trying to make up my mind about the green broom, but then the image loaded completely and I saw the pink slippers.

What type of lens did you use for that pretty lady?

I dont know whether to laugh or cry. It seems funny, but I've been walking around Manhatten with my new 10D and L glass shooting photojournalistic style and deciding if I want to shoot homeless or not.

This pix really says a lot if you look at it. I dont know the circumstances, but I am reading a lot into it.
Of course this is after my third glass of Glenfiddich.

Some of us aren't happy with over $10k in camera gear in our pack, some 'need' even more. This lady can come up with a smile without even $10 worth of worldly goods. I hope, by 'paid', you mean YOU slipped HER a few bucks?

Sometimes, it's hard to know who's better off. Sometimes. There's more to life than material goods, no?

You seem to be enjoying making fun of that homeless woman as if she is a clown.

Do you know her? Do you know what circumstances lead her to such life?

Don't make fun of people. You reversals of fortune do happen.

I agree, Mishkin. She looks full of courage and character. I'm sad, not for her but for those who feel that they are in a position to mock. I don't think they realise what they are doing to themselves and how small they have become.

it's nice that you helped her out.

A psych professor once admonished me for pitying an old man, stating that you can not judge someone elses state until you have walked in their shoes.

What also comes to mind was an interview with the former Sugeon General Koop who was asked if he would give a dollar to a homeless person if he knew he would use it to buy booze. Dr. Koop replied that he would if he thought it would help the person to get through the night.

Interesting.
