After reviewing and re-reviewing my options I've decided to go with a Super Digi Bin 20GB model for ~$240. This was more of a coin flip than anything else.

To be used with a Canon S45 with one 128MB and two 256MB Simple Tech CF cards.

Will be used perhaps at greatest 4-5 days away from a 120 or 240v electrical outlet from where I can charge it. Probably at most 640MB transfered to it per day in 'no hurry' conditions.

Reliability is important as is robustness and ability to handle traveling not so lightly - in backpack for example. But would perform the CF to SDB transfers in a careful environment.

Don't care too much how long it takes to transfer data from unit to home PC. After being away for a while I can wait hours if needed.

So based on what I said is there any reason not to go with the SDB? Or does a different manufacturer seem worth giving another look?

Thanks,
Al

Al,

I too was moving back and forth with this decision. I chose the Tripper even though I too am using simpletech. I posted my reasons as to this choice here:

I would like to hear more about the reasoning for your choice.

I don't think you made a mistake--just a different choice. For me, it boiled down to feeling that the Tripper was generally superior excepting the simpletech compatability issue and the lack of battery power. I believe that both issues have been resolved leaving me believing that Tripper is then indeed the better choice.

Just this guy's opinion and BTW, I haven't yet received it so this is all theoretical.

frankly it was just out of frustration of not finding that one clearly stood out over the others. For most other technical product decisions this is easy for me - I think its the imaturity of the market for these and the fact that they are only really meant to do one thing that makes this the case.

Anyway the SimpleTech and WinXP issue worried me a bit - i wanted an out of the box working unit with no fuss - to much other stuff going on in my life right now.

Also I didn't want to (althought I am very capable of) mess with hacking together an battery solution.

I think SDB has tranfer complete/sucessful verify as well (again not verify file)

Maybe I missed what is superior about Tripper other than Tripper to PC transfer is fast if using USB 2.0. What else?

Well, one thing I can't stand about the SuperDigiBin is that it runs off of battery when connected to the computer (According to the FAQ and the manual. Please prove me wrong if this is so). I intend to using the device connected to the PC as a portable drive, which means ON when the PC is on..period. I don't want to have to reconnect the thing everytime I wanna drop a file.

Of course, this is a picky PC user... ;)

Just my thoughts. But whatever you do, buy when you need it, and what you need...understanding that these things are going to get better and better...

So for me, it's probably going to be the Tripper from Charles at Insidecomputer.

Well Al, I can't really say that anything else really makes it superior IF PHD to PC upload times are irrelevant. If the simpletech issue is indeed not handled, I also would go to SDB as my plan B. I tend to be a little more adventerous than is prudent so I may indeed be panicking at the last moment to have a working unit up, running, and ground truthed before the 16th when I absolutely need it. I will post results, however. I agree with you that given the state of the science, there is more than one correct choice!

OK - I just ordered a Tripper from IC and requested the firmware upgrade so I wouldn't have to deal w/SimpleTech and/or WinXP issues.

Hopefully it will be here by Tues. I'll be taking it on a test trip Thurs-Sun to begin learning details and gain confidence in it for the real need of 4wks traveling starting late May.

Reason I decided on Tripper was faster PC communications so I could better use it as a third/portable HD.

Indeed a difficult choice. Did you consider the X-drive II, which is now USB 2?

That's great, Al--now we'll have a test sample size of two! Mine shipped today (I'll bet they upgraded the firmware on both at the same time). You'll probably beat me to a serious test but I'll simulate field tests next week as well. It'll be great to see these in action and to see if all of the issues have indeed been dealt with.

Eric,

I was going to go with the Super Digibin but was told they have a new version coming out soon that has USB 2.0 but then I found out ti was going to be delayed for my trip so I started to look at the tripper until I found out that it didn't work with my simple tech cards. So I am still deciding on what I am going to do. I have a few more weeks to decide on what I am going to do.

MIchael,

I should get mine in the next day or so and shoot only with Simpletech. Supposedly, Insidecomputer has already done the frimware upgrade on the unit I ordered to fix the problem. I will report ASAP on performance as soon as it gets here. Stay tuned my friend...

Eric,

Thanks for responding back. Not having much luck with people on the Canon Forum responding back to my questions. I was told a while back that SDB 2 was suppose to be out soon so not sure when that is happening.

Thanks again
