So many complaints about 10D. Is anybody happy?

  • Focus problems - yet to be proved here by anyone who's opinion as a photographer I trust
  • dead pixels - few and far between happens to all cameras
  • hot pixels - as above
  • error messages on different lenses - specific case unable to be replicated
  • too soft processing - rubbish the detail is there ...it just needs USM

Check these download and try it and you can easily decide for yourself.

Hi
I'm considering buying a 10D.
I now own a eos 5 with 28-105 and a G2.
I don't like the G2 AF, although I love digital.
I love the eos5, although it's not digital.

Now all I read about is complaints.
"Shall I return it?" is all I read.
  • Focus problems
  • dead pixels
  • hot pixels
  • error messages on different lenses
  • too soft processing
Is anybody happy inhere with it's 10D.
I played with it in the store and I loved it.
So is it worth it?
Or wait for better? (a never ending story)
Is there somebody happy out there????

Any tips on how to do a quick test in the store?

To date my 10D seems to autofocus better than the previous EOS film cameras I have owned, and the high ISO works well. Of course, I have realistic expectations from previous camera experiences.

I have owned one for about a month now and I think the camera is great. I have owned several other under $2000 cameras and this camera beats the pants off of them.

Buy one. Buy it from a dealer that will let you exchange it if you have problems, and who will let you get your money back if you're not happy with it (even if Canon has tried to fix it and can't).

The likelihood is that you'll get a camera that meets your expecations. Failing that, an exchanged unit will probably be better. If not, Canon can almost certainly fix the problem.

If you still have issues, then maybe a 1D would be better, or maybe you're just asking WAY too much of the camera (as I do of my 1D).

Only YOU can tell if you'll like the camera or not. Odds are, you will. Unless you constantly shoot in conditions like these:

http://www.neonlightsimaging.com/TinPanSouth2003

The dimmest venues were ISO 3200, f/1.4, and 1/30 sec. The brighter venues were ISO 1600, f/2, and 1/60 sec.

Photography -- just another word for compromise

collecting data in a web forum (where people are likely to go to find help with problems) is likely to result in biased sampling.

20 reponses out of what is possiblly 10's of thousands of cameras is also not a good sample.

I haven't owned one long, but I'd say I'm 90% happy with it. I see some chips on shoulders on here sometimes when people talk about those of us who have upgraded from consumer digital cameras to SLR cameras. So, all of these folks were born with digital SLRs attached to their rears, huh? Hmm, interesting.

I have experienced a few focusing issues with the camera. I bought a Canon lens with it as part of a package and it's the 24-85 Ultrasonic lens. There have been times when the camera is showing me that it is focusing on the spots I want it to, and when I see the final print, I find that it has focused instead on something a few feet behind it. This is happening on about 15% of the photos. I am going to experiment however with center focusing to see if that does anything, but haven't had the time to do it yet.

I've read posts lately about various Canon models that have problems with crooked pictures, focusing issues, and soft images. I know someone who took a Canon back because of one of these issues being pretty bad. I've read the other brand forums on here and see fewer complaints like that with some of the other models out there. So my complete novice's take on it is that from observations at least, Canon does indeed seem to be having some real control problems with their products.

I'm keeping my 10D and plan on taking some great shots with it, but I'm not going to be one of these people with a huge arrogant chip on their shoulder and not call a problem when I see it, or slander someone who's posting about an issue. I think there are some folks who freak out over small issues for sure, but I do think Canon has some quality issues with various things they need to look at.

I have an EOS5 great camera. Watch the function dial though!
Got a G2 and still love it. AF doesn't bother me as it seems to work well.
Had a D30 and regretted parting with it.

Until I bought the 10D. Very pleased. All I was hoping for and more.
Only fault is I can't find enough time to use it. I keep having to go to work.

Great Camera no problems, other than I don't get enough time to use it.

No problems at all with mine, works superb as does my D60.. the 10D represents amazing bang for buck..

Add a decent lens and Capture One LE and you've got a hell of an imaging rig..
