Don't take photos of oil storage tanks

You do know that we're at war with a regime which has threatened
terrorist attacks, right?
"We're"? If any Iraqi's are reading this, they might agree with you.

Some things to think about :

Point 1: I think you'll find this is a global forum.
Poster's location is in the U.S. My location is in the U.S. I was speaking to him. Thus the use of "We're".
Please don't actually answer these questions.
No, just clarifying my use of terminology given that it was misunderstood.

I'm sure they are trying very hard to do so. When you stop to think about what an enormous job it is for people in the various security fields to cover every possible target that could be hit by terrorists it's mind boggling. If I were to be questioned in the manner that the original poster was I would not be surprised or upset.

Andi,

As much as I'd like to respond to you statement, this is not a political forum so instead I'll ask all of us to keep politics out of it.
Thanks

Interesting and scary. M.
Very scary indeed...
...but not very interesting because this situation was very easy to
forsee. The agressiveness and arrogance of the Bush administration
confirms the worst prejudices against the USA. The US are now
gradually starting to learn what terrorism is really all about and
how it affects the public life. I'm just hoping that reason will
find its way back into US international politics asap to prevent
further damage.
Otherwise, just look at the situation in Palestine/Israel to see
what your life will look in a couple of years... :-S
...reason is finding its way back in the UK - according to the
latest poll, already more than 50% of the population think that
starting the war was a mistake. So there is hope. People are not
that stupid!
Elections in the US are around the corner, so the internati.nal
community will be able to start working on sustainable solutions
very soon.

But the damage that was done to the reputation of the US will take
veeeery loooong to reverse, I can tell you that.

I pray for every innocent US citizen

You do know that we're at war with a regime which has threatened
terrorist attacks, right?
What!!!! Well, that explains why they keep interrupting "Friends" with news flashes. Thanks for the info. :-)
I'd love to sit in the Walmart parking lot not far from here and
photograph the transport planes and other aircraft flying in and
out of the airbase across the highway
I can do that from my backyard. I happen to be under the approach path for a Naval airbase. What's really impressive is the noise of the Russion transport planes that NASA contracted to deliver satellites (NASA and the Navy share the local airbase). I'm not making this up. I have a book that identifies airplane bodies. I asked my friend, who's a pilot, why those big planes over my house look like Russian, not American, transports. He said that NASA can't get any American resources to deliver the things, so they contract it out to the Russian Air Force.

How times have changed :-)

Andy

in the same dimension as the rest of us?
What part of the word terrorism don't you get?
They are ignorant of this subculture?
You think visiting a museum will help us fight terrorism?
What subculture did you crawl out from under?

Please get real and stop posting nonsense.

JL
d@mned if they don't.

So the authorities follow up on suspicious activities -- a tank
farm would be a very tempting target. Someone notices suspicious
activity and the authorities check it out to make sure the guy's
legit.
I don't see how any photographer would view industrial photography
for fine art purposes as a suspicious activity. There's a large
genre of such photography. In fact, there are several books of
industrial night photography sitting in the photography book
section of the Getty Museum this very moment. Law enforcement is
simply ignorant of this subculture and the subculture of train
spotting and airplane watching. They should buy some magazines and
books on the subject and learn something. Oh, and visiting a
gallery or two wouldn't hurt.

Thank God you had a receipt for your 1D, otherwise they would have... well what would they have done? Arrest you for not having a receipt for your 1D?

What if you were a terrorist? And they failed to at least ask
some questions? How would you feel about that?
How do we know he isn't a terrorist?

Elections in the US are around the corner, so the internati.nal

Will Bush still try to rig it again with the help of brother Jeb in
Florida? Can't have felons/people that have a similar name or share
the same birthday as a felon voting now, can we? I'm sure he'll
find some other way of buying votes
If you knew anything about out electoral system you wouldn't make such stupid statements as the one above. Elections are handled at the county level and the Gov. of the state has very little to do with them. Please tell me how Jeb rigged the election? Did he hand out stupid pills to all of the morons who couldn't figure out how to vote? Please show us a little more intelligence in your next post.
But the damage that was done to the reputation of the US will take
veeeery loooong to reverse, I can tell you that.
What about the damage France, Germany and Russia has done? How long until the US forgives those knuckleheads for their foul play?

Iraq was armed primarily by 3 countries: Russia, China and France. I wonder why they were going to veto the UN vote. Maybe because we are about to eliminate a large customer of theirs? Or find all the illegal arms they has been supplying to Saddam?

Maybe the US should stop aiding and feeding the world? How will you like it then. Maybe all of the 3rd world terrorist losers should starve to death without US aid, then we won't have to worry about them bombing us?
I worry for every innocent citizen
You should worry if you are a terrorist!

It really starts sounding like a police state over there :)

They wanted to see my receipt because I said I was trying out my
new camera. If I lied about having a NEW camera, I guess that

I'm surprised the receipt didn't lead to further questions. For example, why did you decide to purchase this expensive camera right around when the war started? Was it just to take pictures of those oil tanks?

I guarantee that if this had happened to me, I would be in jail right now.

Hello Mike. Thanks for sharing your experience. You just made me aware that I have to be more careful about my choice of subject. There are some storage tanks I had thoughts of photographing ever since I saw them about a year ago. Definite potential, but . . . * ploop * . . . the sound you heard was that of my plans being trashed. :-(

Knock, knock.

I hope not.
Last night, 2 FBI agents came to my house to discuss photos I was
taking of the oil storage tanks near my house. They are quite
beautiful, painted a bright white which stands out from the rest of
this residential area.

It seems like there is a security risk for photographing things
like this. These officers were very serious. Definitely not
people to joke around with. They mentioned having to investigate
other photographers who take pics of birds because there was a
controversial site in the distance.

I had to show my receipts for my new 1D, show them the photos--to
exif data confirmed I was where I said I was--and otherwise prove I
was an artist and not someone to worry about.

Interesting and scary. M.

I'm not showing you/your country any disrespect...I'm just worried about Bush, for someone with so much power it worries me that the 1st country he decides to liberate is the one with the largest supply of oil yet to reach it's full potential, there are far more countries with worse human rights records...I suggest you read the book Stupid White Men by Michael Moore...even if you don't like the guy he rasies interesting points, and from what I've seen in our media and what I've read in his book, he seems to have a good case

I don't have the time or the inclenation to go into the full story, but if yer in a book shop it's pages 3 - 15 (uk edition) look it up, it's well worth a read...No I don't work for him, a book shop or book publisher, :-)

Eliminate? Sadam or Iraq???...Just kiddin'

You have guts...I must admit when cops showed up behind me I was surprised. I was in a public park where everyone in town takes pictures. I took the 10D to the park to take sunset pictures, behind the bridge.

Cops showed up and said that they got a report that someone who "looks like a terrorist" is taking pictures of the bridge. They were very professional about it, but got all my information and left me to take more pictures.

I was going to go to the historic district and take pictures this spring -- meaning the next few weeks. I am not sure what I should do now. Call the police first? I do not know what to do. I do not want to sit and home and feel like a prisoner, but I do not want to get thrown into prison, for no reason, and become a prisoner either.
possible I suppose. I live in Manhattan and shoot everything,
including the Brooklyn bridge, machine gun armed guards outside the
Stock Exchange and in the subways, police on 'orange' alert... I'm
always observed, but never questioned. Its just typical NYPD
routine.
I guess it depends on the local area and the circumstances.
We all have to do our own thing and not assume based on random
incidents our rights are being oppressed or restricted. I still
shoot oil tanks too.
just my two cents
Patricknyc

they told him he couldn't take such pictures. Just that they needed to follow up on someone probably having called in what they (the caller) considered "suspicious activity". But I could be wrong.

Wonder what would happen if, a day or so before you planned to go out and take pictures of the storage tanks you mention, you call up your local police folks and tell 'em you're gonna be out there making some photgraphs and you'll be in such-and-such color car, and to feel free to stop by if they like.

Heck, you might even make sure you bring a dozen donuts to share. :)

I wouldn't give that Piece of Sh_t a single penny. I really could care less about any points he may or may not have. If we wanted oil, we could've pointed our guns at the Kuwaities and 'Taken' their oil. I find it so amusing that people think the US is going to steal the oil. Last time I looked, we (the US) has to pay for oil. Iraqi oil too. As far as human rights issues go, we also have to look at what threat they are to the entire world. Some small african country that tortures its people isn't going to get much attention, unless they harbor terrorists or are producing WMD's.
May be the US shouldn't have backed Iraq against Iran (Iran Iraq

Which side should we have been on then? Which side was France or England on at the time? Do you remember the hostages that were taken in Iran? Have you ever heard this saying, "My enemy's enemy is my friend".

At that time we were more than happy to see the Iranians getting killed. Please advise what weapons the Iraqis used against the Iranians? Which country supplied them to Iraq? Russia? China? France? Bingo, all three. How many US tanks are/were in Saddams army? None. How many US made planes does he have/had? Zero. All French Mirage and Russian Mig's. What type of weapons do his troops carry? M16's? Nope. AK47's. Do we make them in the US? Nope. If you were to ever read the accounts about the meeting that took place between Rumsfeld and Saddam, you would know that at that time we did not trust him, we really did not like him, but we did supply him with photos of Iranian troop movement with the hopes that he would kill them.

Your cynical outlook on the US is way off base, and you should really try to find out the whole truth about matters you write about.

so instead I'll ask all of us to keep politics out
There is too much implicit and expicit politics in this forum - I'm afraid that's not possible.

In the beginning, I also wanted to stay quiet, but the number and the tone of "US-centristics" postings / opinions here is hard to bear. It would look very funny if these postings (like this one here: the "victimized" US hobby photographer...) were left unanswered.

It's not so much about "politics" here anyway, it's more about "venting". I prefer US nationalists preaching bombs to solve problems here, rather than in other places. Chances are small but intact that they might learn that the world is about people, and not political slogans and what you hear on TV.

That's my motivation. Feel free to contact the forum manager and submit a complaint.

New York City and Washington DC, USS Cole, 2 US embassies in Africa as examples. What countries did those terrorsits come from? The US? France? UK? Nooooo. A hodge podge of 3rd rate, 3rd world countries. What countries do you think they came from?
I worry for every innocent citizen
You should worry if you are a terrorist!

I did not address my post to you Andiboy, why did you ask that stupid question. But if you are a terrorist, I would worry.
I'm ashamed, ashmed, ashmed...
You should be, your cowardly approach to how the world should deal with terrorism IS shameful. Please continue to keep your head buried deep in the sand and watch as we send a very powerful message to ALL terrorist regimes in this world.
