I would put this in the Storage forum (actually, I already did) but activity is fairly slow over in that forum. Besides, it'd be nice to hear from actual Sony users either way. Most people are CF users.

So as my title suggests, I'm looking for a PDA / image storage solution. I have read about dual PCMCIA expansion slots for the iPaq and such PDAs where you could hook up a HDD to one of the slots and the memory stick (via adapter) in the other.

Does anyone know of a good solution? My reason for going this route is that I actually have use for a PDA as well, so this would shoot two birds w/ 1 stone for me.

Thanks for any help!

Dear fonebone,

You might want to look into this setup. Buy

1) Compaq iPaq PDA
2) Memplug Compact Flash/Memory Stick Expansion Pack
( http://www.pitech.com/hardware/iCFMS/ipCFMS_index.htm )
3) 1GB CompactFlash

with the Compact Flash/Memory Stick Expansion Pack, you can use your PDA to transfer your images from the Memory Stick to the 1GB Compact Flash. Even better, maybe you can purchase the new 4GB Compact Flash card when it hits the market.

This is really cool! have you tried it? If this works well, I am definitely getting my hands on one of these. Because for one, I'm hoping to get another small camera or (whenever the time comes that I get better and/or more money) upgrade to a DSLR w/ CF.

Again, thanks for this awesome find! This is much more beneficial.

Hey fonebone,

Yes, I have tried it. I have the exact setup. They work fine but the only draw back is that you can't view the pictures on your iPaq. Actually, let me rephrase that, you don't want to look at the picture on your iPaq because of the low resolution of the display. But as far as for storage purpose, it works. But just keep in mind that it's not cheap. For example:

iPaq (~$350) + Expansion Pack (~$80.00) + 1GB CF card (~$200.00) = ~$630

I have had many palms. I currently have a clie and I love it but as a form of a storage solution, I don't recomend it. The previous set up sounds much better. I would consider the price, as you are getting close to what a laptop would cost. But a PDA size, fuctionality, and convienence is hard to beat. If a PDA is what you are looking for and need go with that, but personaly if it was mainly for photo storage I'd go with laptop as you see the pictures on a larger screen and even burn a backup on to CD.

Yeah.. that's the reason why I like it because of portability and the fact that I wanted/needed one. True a laptop is nice, but a PDA's storage capabilities is much nicer.

Looking around, I've found
iPaq 3835 ($210)
Sleeve ($80)
1GB card (~$170)

which comes out to about ~$450

My previous idea was
sony clie sj30 ($250)
10GB Laptop HDD (~$30)
X-Drive II ($120)

which comes out to about ~$400.

For the extra $50, I don't mind getting the iPaq as it is better PDA (IMO), and I have an "extra" CF in case I ever get a camera that uses CF... which I think I will some day.

hey fonebone,

I have the iPaq 3835, Memplug Expansion Pack and Sandisk 1GB Compact Flash Card. If the 1GB SD card's price go down, maybe you can use that as the storage, but that won't be for awhile.

A few weeks ago I bought a NX60 Clie at Compu USA for $424. I just love it, big upgrade from my old Handspring. Beautiful big screen and I love the clam shell flip screen.

At the moment not a storage solution as there is only the memory stick slot, but the NX and NZ series have a communication slot which is really type II compact flash slot. At this point there is no driver to use a memory card but sounds like a lot of people are working on it. The slot works with a Wifi 802.11 card and also some compact flash modem cards. I got a bluetooh memory stick module from eurpoe so I can send and recieve email using it and my cell phone.

In my view mutch better option than the palm Tungton, at least for my needs. NZ is crazy expensive at 8-900 so unless you need it seems overkill, and its bigger than then NX.

Now once this works the probelm is (or I guess not probelm but good alternative option is) that mem stick prices for 128 are getting so inexpensive that they may be cheeper than compact flash.

I don't like some of the hard drive solutions as I have had them crash on me, the best solution down the road may be CD/DVD based. Nixvue has one comming out with built in memory stick slot, and I'm sure there wil be more. (I don't know if it will make you burn CD with only 128 mb on it if you use that stick, and I don't know about support for mem stick pro, but they do say somethign about support for cards larger than 640mb by disc spanning.

yeah.. i wanted a clie at first but timing is actually important. I need a solution soon because I know I will be traveling at some point soon. The iPaq just seems more practical right now since the clie doesn't have an external expansion option.

Just found this thread while searching. Here is a note of caution to future searchers about the Memplug MS/CF expansion pack.

Unless they have changed their design since they first came out, DO NOT EVER insert an IBM microdrive in the Memplug CF slot. Their brochures warns that it may be difficult to remove because the microdrive does not have the ridge on the edge like a regular CF card does.

"difficult" doesn't begin to describe it. The drive inserts so far that you cannot remove it. (the ridge on a regular CF card sticks out enough that you can pry it out with a finger nail.)

After trying every thing I and my resourceful tech person could think of, the only way I could remove it was to grip the edge with some needlenose pliers and pull-- hardly recommended handling for a delicate device like this.

I was doubly p* d when I wrote to the company to ask how THEY recommended removing a microdrive-- and they never responded. Mine got sent back.

Hi,

I've solution for you. I've Toshiba e740 Pocket PC. I've expansion pack along with it. You can download drivers for allowing your DSC-F717 to directly communicate to e740 from here http://www.deje.gmxhome.de/download.html

Toshiba e740 has dual SD & CF slots. You can connect DSC-F717 to e740 using expansion pack and copy images from MS to CF card which is comparatively cheap. Even you can connect USB harddisk to e740 and use it as a MP3 player. I'm using mine as a storage solution with my DSC-F717. Search on http://www.fatwallet.com and you may find some good deals on PDA.

Hope this helps.
