Hi all ----

I have a Nikon D1X. Takes a pretty good picture. I'm pretty upset about the 1.5x thing and the battery life stinks (300 RAW pics per battery).

Also the lenses are expensive!

Here is what I have so far:

Nikon D1X
Nikon SB-80DX Flash
Nikkor 50mm f/1.4
Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.4-4.5
Sigma 17-35mm
Sigma 50-500mm

Am I in too deep to make a switch to Canon?

Would I benefit from switching to Canon or should I wait until the next DSLR from Nikon later this year.

What would be the benefits and loses if I switched to Canon?

I also hate how the D1X has white noise at long exposures. I can't even do decent night shots.

It makes me mad to think I spent this money and can't even do what cheap film camera can.

If you like the "teast" of Nikon, you would't like Canon!

How much is 1Ds? it also will have noise for long exp!

unless you mainly do action AF photo, you will switch back!

You cannot possibly have checked cannons prices for their good lenses if you think Nikon lenses are too

expensive and the 550EX sucks compared to the sb80. How would I know - I switched to Canon - got the D60 and a 550

EX - I just switched back after shooting Canon film and digital for 3 years - And I couldn't be happier to be back. by the way the 1D has it's own problems its users compain about and the 1ds is way too expensive. read their forum - it's not all smiles and happy faces over there. If you want a D60 - I've got one for sale.

man if i were u i would have bought the D100 and spend the rest of $$
on nikon glass! the 17-35AFS and 28-70AFS are simply unmatched by
any other makers. canon's come really close as for resolution but flare
control and build quality (plastic vs metal) there's simply no competition!

I would wait until after PMA and check the new offerings. Provided that Nikon doesn't come out with a better multiplier I would recommend you do.

I'm saving my pennies to get a 1D (1.3x sweet) for around $3600 - today's street price. I can't afford the 1Ds.

You sound like a guy who is more concerned with gadgets than photos.

Nothing wrong with that if thats what you like. Just remember people were taking brilliant photos with much more primitive cameras than what you are using now many years ago.

If you don't like the 1.5x then you can either get a Canon 1Ds or wait for the Kodak 14n. Battery life is an easier problem - get a spare. But the Canon lenses will be expensive too since you will need L glass to make the most of the IDs.

Guess what? L glass is expensive too.

d60, d30, and 1d have fov crops.
1ds is insanely expensive.

Why switch?

i was talking about the build quality of pro-calibre lenses. As for body,
since you want Full Frame, 1Ds is the only choice. it's a solid camera but so
is its price tag. So... selling both D1x and D100 and some lenses to get
the body, then what lens? Since you said FF is important to you I assume
you need super-wide like 16-35L, which isn't cheap either and more important,
the larger sensor requires better chromatic aberration correction and 16-35L
simply isn't there yet...

am not trying to talk you into sticking with nikon, actually i've been doing

researches too because i need FF as well. But there just isn't a 'dream system' yet. kinda like what they say about spouse, a new husband won't be less problem, just a NEW SET of problem =o)

Any I think you post at a wrong forum.

I'm concerned that for all the money I have invested, I perhaps made the wrong choice.

I'm really close to buying an F5 and getting back to taking pictures.

You are clearly upset. Life is too short to be unhappy. Switch to Canon if that will make you happy. However, given the rapidly changing landscape of digital photography, a year or so from now you may be upset with Canon, because Nikon has the best thing around..or Minolta, or Kodak or someone else. IMHO, with emphais on the "H"..if your pictures are not up to snuff do to the equipment, dump the equipment. If you are happy with the quality of your images, but are upset over the lag time of the manufacturer of said equipment to keep pace with another manufacturer, that can change in a blink of an eye.

Ultimately...is the equipment..the machinery.. aiding you in achieving and communicating your vision of the world, or is it not. If not..unload.

You should wait a few more weeks to see what new DSLRs Canon and Nikon announce at PMA.

As for the 1.5x thing, your only choice at the present time is to fork over big bucks for a Canon 1Ds.

The DCS-760 is 6mp, and has a 1.3x FOV crop as well. Also, it's a bonafide F5 body/AF system, so it's built like a tank. Best of all, you can use all of your lenses!

Here's a new/demo unit on eBay right now that ends tomorrow afternoon:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2911707847&category=30020

It's also cheaper then the 1D (and certainly 1Ds), is built just as well, has more resolution, has the same 1.3x FOV crop, and won't make you go through the pain of a switch.

Heck, you could probably sell your D1x and MAKE money on this deal!

Now let's see whether you're blowing smoke or what ;-)
