With the apparent demise of Minds at Work and the Mindstor, I am looking for the "next best thing". I have read various posts on the alternative image portable mass storage devices and am confused. I need (or want):
  • NEF compatibility
  • CF II (Microdrive) compatibility
  • Firewire interface
  • 20-30GB of storage
  • reasonably long battery life
  • true portability (not a second PC)
Any suggestions?

After comparing my options, I just ordered a 20MB Tripper. It was between that and the Digibin, but I liked the idea of having USB 2.0 downloads.

I'd probably choose the Tripper, but as far as I can tell it's not Mac compatible. The only one that had Frewire was the Mindstor unit. I'll probably go with the Super Digibin or maybe the Image Tank and bear with the USB1 transfer rate. If anyone knows of something coming out in the next month or so that has Firewire and is affordable, please let me know!

I bought the Image Tank for several reasons:
(1) Light and small
(2) Can change the HD if needed - I got a 20 GB but could go bigger

(3) Simple power supply, external, which powers my Minolta 7i as well if I run out of AAs.

(4) Very light and versatile charging for travel abroad - small transformer from 240 V to 12 V with a car plug in which will let me use my small 4 AA charger for camera batts.

My aim was for a complete digi system which is light and multi use. So far, so good!

I have only heard of the Tripper recently. Is there any experience with customer service or reliability, both of which were awful at Minds at Work (Mindstor)? Any experience with the Nixvue Vista?

I just received my 20GB Tripper from Mydigitaldiscount last night. I did some test and transfer speed from 1GB microdrive to Tripper are almost exactly on target for what they claim (about 12.5 minutes) . I am doing some battery test today after cycling the battery a few times. The Tripper to PC speed clocks in at about 14MB second. I did a long test and found I could fill the 20GB tripper in about 20 minutes! I couldn't even download 1 GB off my Digital Wallet in that amount of time!

I will post more details as I gather data. I will be field testing the Tripper in the great NorthWest (Seattle) over the next four days.

I purchased a Super Digibin last week. I think it is the way to go. It does not have firewire or USB2 (it is USB 1). It is however the fastest at transferring from the card to the device. I am very happy with the Digibin and the customer service I recieved from Charles at Inside Computer.

Here is the URL where I purchased mine:

I look forward to reading the report on your experience with the Tripper, Dennis. Have a great time in beautiful Seattle.

These are all nice gadgets, but damn, I sure have a hard time justifying the price. This isn't rocket science or even "new" technology. It's a flipp'n hard drive with some firmware installed and a $10 LCD. What the heck am I missing?

Hi Dennis;

I live in Seattle. If you'd like some suggestions for places to go to shoot, let me know. Kerry Park is a "GREAT" place for night shots of the Sapce Needle. Check out my shots from there last week at: http://www.pbase.com/phred426 . Have a good time out here!

Fred.

PS: I'm going to buy the Nixvue Vista 20 GB from B & H. Also, I spoke with Jerry at B & H and their not selling Minds@Work products anymore.

I have been checking the weather and it appears that Seattle has enjoyed unprecedented dry and sunny weather in the last few weeks.

I arrive Thursday afternoon and depart Sunday afternoon. I understand that Sunday is the day they expect "normal" weather to return.

Thank you all for you comments and suggestions. I will now have to make the decision and spend the cash. I think I've narrowed my search to the Tripper and the Nixvue Vista.

Fred:

Thanks so much for the photo idea. Unfortunately, I will not be able to haul my Bogen 3021BN with me. I don't know if I can hand hold it, but I might have to try.

By the way, just what do they inject into space with that big old needle?

Those are some GREAT shots. Where is the Russian Sub? Will it be there on Saturday afternoon when I have my only break of this meeting? Looking at that view from the park I might have to figure out a way to tote that tripod with me!!! FANTASTIC!
