Hi,
Is there a charger included with the c5050 here in
Europe (Austria)? Whats with the so often mentioned
Remote Control?

thanks,
  1. suri

In Europen and in Asia your C-5050 does not include the remote contro RM-1, the 4 AA Ni-MH rechargeable batteries and the battery charger. Instead, you get 2 one-time-use-only Olympus CR-V3 lithium batteries. The RM-1 remote control, rechargeable batteries and the battery charger are included only in North America (U.S. and Canada)

Hi
I bought the C5050 in the UK and received all but the remote.

Slàinte, Norie

Perhaps due to Americanism? I got my C-5050 including everything (the remote control, rechargeable batteries and battery charger) two months ago in Toronto Canada for $1129 Canadian (about $740 U.S. or 685 EURO)

James,

You are wrong. European version contains all, but remote control. Asian version does not include charger + batteries and remote control.

That's a discrimination!

PoiSoN,

Yes you are correct (I got my wrong conclusion on the RM-1 control unit), and yes it's discrimination and Americanism.

James, does the CAD1129 include taxes? And where did you get it?

I have got family in Canada coming over for a visit soon and maybe they can bring a 5050 with.

Unfortunately, where they live in BC they can only get it for CAD1200 + 14.5% = CAD1374 from Futureshop or London Drugs.

This is pretty expensive compared to USD609 at BuyDig.com, but if I bought it there I would have to pay another USD100 for delivery, and about USD230 for import taxes.

Jola,

I got mine from Henry's in Toronto for $1129 Canadian + 15% tax (7% GST + 8% Ontario PST). Henry's are perhaps the biggest retail camera stores in and around Toronto (in Ontario only) http://wwww.henrys.com . Another big one is Vistek Canada with retail stores in Toronto and Calgary http://www.vistek.ca .

And yes the current official retail price of a C-5050 in Canada (from Henry's and Vistek for example) is $1199 Canadian plus sales tax but there is usually a room for bargaining. I got mine at a Henry's for $1129 Canadian when the listed price was $1199 Canadian and got some discount on an Olympus 128MB xD-Picture card. And no I haven't seen any C-5050 in a FutureShop retail store in Toronto (but I have been in Stockholm Sweden on a business trip for more than 2 weeks so perhaps FutureShop got it by now?). There are no London Drugs stores in and around Toronto (they are in British Columbia I believe) so I can't say anything about it.

And something strange about this discrimination from Olympus! I mean Olympus is a Japanese company headquartered in Tokyo Japan in Asia not anywhere close to North America.

They've been ripping the Brits and europeans off for years with high prices, smaller cards, no or less accessories and no printed manuals .

Couple this with poor service and high prices and you can see why Sony and Canon are so popular - we get 12 months warranty on Sony (3 months in the USA) and top service from both companies, they give the same accessories as the USA too..

I'd stick to buying grey (from the USA) with Oly in UK / Eiurope because the repair turnaround is 6 to 8 weeks from experience, you'd get teh camera back quicker if it had to be sent to the USA and the repair departments are far better over there.. Franky it's just easier NOT to buy an Olympus camera though unfortunately no one else makes an "E10" let alone at the price - a used one from Jessops is the way to go there ..

James,

Thanks for the information.

Yes, Futureshop does appear to have it now (it is on their website), they didn't have it when I was in BC in December.

Future shop will pricematch with nearby locations, but I'm afraid that Toronto is pushing it. If I can find a store near Kelowna (possibly as far as Vancouver) that sells it for less than CAD1200, then I could either get it from there or get Futureshop to match the price.

Not quite sure why these guys have to sell at official retail price, that gives them huge margins (should I say obscene margins!!!).

In the USA the official retail price is USD800, but the 5050 is sold for USD609 or even less (admittedly internet pricing!). I'm sure that the markup of the official retail price over cost is the the same as in Canada.

Are retailers in Canada greedy, or what? Maybe there are some other hidden taxes in Canada that I'm not aware of.

That's true, James, but many companies have applied differential pricing between Europe and the USA for many years. I think that having split markets / currencies helped them.

Now that Europe is becoming more financially integrated with the Euro this may have to change, the European market is as big as the US one. But it also depends on pressure from buyers - so go for it Europeans - if you don't get the service, just order from the USA. The manufacturers will get the message at some point.

Tough luck UK, you may love the pound but it's going to cost you!

Good News! Go to Camera Canada's page at http://www.cameracanada.com and enter the search on "C-5050" (on the upper right hand corner of the page) and you will see C-5050 for $1100 Canadian. Print the search result page and present it to a FutureShop to get the price match. For your information, FutureShop will price match any Canadian on-line or retail store's price. Good luck!

James

No it isn't, we'l just order from Germany, been doing it with Synths for years, guess what happened, the UK price of synths dropped. it's almost as cheap carriage wise to get stuff from there as it is from London..

Yes you should go for it. In any case I believe you should be able to get one from Canada cheaper than from Europe. Beside you will get the RM-1 remote control unit included. And I believe the battery charger looks coolor (it is thin and stays flat as the plugs can be folded back, with no attached cord) but you just need a plug adapter for your country.

Thanks, the plug adapter is no problem, they often come with a variety of electronic gizmos, and you can also buy them at trivial cost. I also have an energizer one hour charger that I bought at Walmart in December that works fine with 220v with a plug adapter. I just sometimes feel that it charges the batteries too warm, so it would be useful to check out the Oly one as well.

I wil set the wheels in motion to try and pick up a 5050.

Thanks for your advice.

Well, if you poms buy enough cars and cameras from Europe I guess that you will arbitrage the prices into line. But the Europeans also need to get their camera prices in line with the USA and Asia. Certainly the buying power is sufficient.

One little problem - if you guys move all your economic activity out of the country, there won't be enough cash left to support your property market!!! (sort of tongue-in-cheek - but half serious!)
Tough luck UK, you may love the pound but it's going to cost you!
