Maybe I shouldn't be on the Canon forum just yet but I put off buying a D60 until the PMA. Depending on what is announced will determine my purchase ie. D60 or successor!

Have watched this forum for a while and I like the comments and advice - you all seem an OK bunch of people.

I will participate more when I'm Canonised, in the meantime I am just getting my head around PBase and have uploaded a couple of images.

I will post more as I become more able.

Thanks for an interesting and informative forum.

Hi Chris

Welcome to the forum, I frequented the forum for a long time before I actually got my D60 and got a lot of helpful advice here (and still do). If you do decide on a D60 I am sure you will love it, on getting mine it has renewed my love of photography and as an amateur it get results that I am vey happy with. Just had a look at your pbase site are you from Holmfirth?

Cheers
Ian

Yes, born and bred

Hi Chris,

Nice to hear from you. We're all newbies at some point. I started the same as you, I was hanging around here towards the end of the D30's production. It didn't quite have enough pixels for me to cough up the cash. So I stuck with my EOS300. But then came the D60. After that well I've been here every week since. Mostly reading, but a bit of posting too. I think I'm about half way to being able to play it like an instrument, and about on level 2 (out of 10) with my photography.

I look forward to your first post, explaining to me how to do something or other. Or your opinion on the 70-200IS+TC Vs 100-400IS :-). In the mean time you can count on me chipping in once in a while, but only if I have the answer or a strong enough opinion.

Simon.

A black box recorder and a silver one :-)

Loads of glass: A conservatory, a greenhouse, a set of 12 matching wine glasses, and a nice decanter to go with them.
A table and a whole bunch of other stuff.

Welcome Chris, have a good read up on the lenses etc and when you get your camera (whether it be a D60, 1DS or the "new" one) and you'll be set .. there are quite a few of us in the UK all looking for good glass prices, if you need links to relaible shops with the best prices I'll post some links :)))

Welcome aboard, Chris.

I did like you, looked and tried to learn whilst deciding whether or not to go for my D30. Most of what I know came from here ;-)

Thanks Adam, I appreciate the help! I will certainly be looking for new lenses, I am going to treat myself to some L glass, it will have to last for a long time!

Some really good deals at CW, this is where I got my 28-70L new for £799, so watch them for blowout deals, they also have the best price on the Sigma 15-30 - they say that they're Web prices only but I use the telephone, they won't turn down a sale!.

Best price on the Canon 16-35L and other lenses

http://www.ajpurdy.co.uk/erol.html

Probably my fave shop, they're great for Used "L"s, I recently got my 80-200L for £450 from their used section as they have a 25% off most used lenses til the end of the month..

It's better to ring these shops than use the net as you never know what's in stock or otherwise especially with used stuff --- hope this helps

Hi guys,

I've bought my D60 and 100-400 from http://www.warehouseexpress.com . Rang them up as I wanted to use their buy now, pay in 9 months. I've just paid the £1800 balance for my D60 even though I had it last april and have taken over 7000 pics. The best bit was it was only £2000 in total and the going price at the time was £2199. I also got it in 3 days, when everyone else was waiting months. Maybe I just got lucky.

http://www.digitalfirst.co.uk/ is good for accessories.

and http://www.7dayshop.com cant be beaten for consumables, batteries and film etc, (as far as I'm aware). They're based in Guernsey so save you paying VAT.

Don't flame me for this... don't forget your local (or regional) Jessops. I got a used 28-135 last year for £270. Found there was a problem with the focal length data being returned to the body just before xmas. It was all fixed on their free 1 year used warranty. Exceeded my expectatation based on the fact they are a big high street chain. Also got a 550EX from the Brum branch. They price matched the best I could get in Amateur Photographer £249.

Last tip, the big ASDA Wallmart's (my nearest one is Minworth) have Fuji Frontier printers now. You can take a long a CD, pop it in the machine, select your print size and go and do the shopping. 1/2 hr later you can pick up your "real photographic" prints. All at 3.99 for 24 or 4.99 for 36. It get's cheaper the more you have.

That's what I LOVE about Jessops, they have a 12 months warranty on used kit - they'll also haggle on used stuff, I spotted a mint 28-105 Mk1 for £200 on the shelf in one store and laughed, I told them that the lens was only £229 new in Mifsuds which it IS - they said "Ok then, how does £140 sound?" - I paid by switch and my EOS30 now has a good walkabout lens! WITH a 12 month warranty.. they're also good for pricematching from those shops we mentioned BUT if it's not in stock within the Jessops stores, FORGET IT, they're useless at getting stuff in ..

Somethings are laughable, their CF card prices are a joke and believe it or not, are DIFFERENTLY priced between the two branches in the same damn town!! .

Why not order them from Park in the first place?, Jessops state 14 days for getting stuff in which isn't in stock, and believe me, I tried this with the 28-70L and they never got it -

They took longer than 14 days to try and get Rach a 24-85 replacement for the duff one they sold her and by the time it arrived, we'd already sorted everything out and she had a Sigma 28-70EX DF from them - Luckily we were able to borrow a GOOD 24-85 from a collegue to truly assess the lens as if we hadn't she probably would still be waiting, everyone else can get deliveries from Canon in two days to a week, Jessops are another matter....... I Wish you luck with your 1D batteries, but from experience, if it's not already in stock in another Jesspos branch ot the main store - buy elsewhere.

trying to save myself 6quid by avioding P+P. if jessops insist in adding park's P+P costs then i will order them from park.

Excellent, you should have them then :)) and I very much doubt that they'll add Park's carriage charge as they'll be stuck with two 1D batteries if you walk out of the door ;-)

When I bought my used EOS 1n, they had a HS model priced at 1p less than a 1n body plus a new booster. The guy didn't realise until I told him.

I went for the new booster.
