Ping Pong Soft Box

How well does it work? Before and after pics? It will cost 30 cents and a trip to the sporting goods store to find out. ;o)

Dane, I posted your picture that I saw over at Fred's without knowing you posted it here as well. I even searched under the spelling you used there "ping-pong" and came up with no recent hits. I should have simplified it since "pong" alone would have produced results. I don't want you to think I was trying to rain on your parade.

No offense taken Garrett...my intent was to share the idea anyway. Best regards, Dane.

i'm curious to know if a hard stock vellum paper will also do the job? please post any experiences you've had with this experiment.

I like the idea of the ping-pong-ball for a diffuser, but they are
made from cellulous and are a bit flammable. I don’t know if the
flash produces enough energy to cause ignition or not. Just a word
of caution…
Yikes! I don't think the flash gets that hot...but I will certainly check that. I did notice when I pieced the ball to start cutting out the receptacle in it, a most noxious gas exuded from the ball...one I am sure was flammable.
Thanks very much for this intelligent warning.

If you have a spare pp ball hit it with a match! You will be surprised!

It is with great interest that I have been reading this thread. However, quite obviously attaching a pin-pong ball in front of the flash unit will result in rendering the camera totally unable to record any pictures. Judged by the length this thread has already attained, and by the number of experts having contributed, I simply cannot think of any other explanation for the fact that nobody seems to be able to post any comparison shots! :-)

And it's not retarded looking.
I don't know how to say this tactfully.
You see, I have a handsome mentally retarded son.
The phrase "retarded looking" is repulsive. Let me suggest that
you delete it from your lexicon.

Greg,

You said it VERY tactfully. You are so right... I'm feeling terribly uncomfortable!

Warmest regards, Yehuda

Is this trick - if it works - any better than placing 2 white tissue paper layers on the flash?

What a great idea!

I'm gonna draw a "smiley face" on mine to distract people from the HAF laser light. Wonder what would happen if you used one of those fluorescent yellow ping-pong balls? As farf as the heat build-up problem goes, try cutting a small vent in the top of the ball. Maybe it will work as partial bounce flash as well! :)
