Nice stuff in a backlit situation. Obviously a great , long lens (do tell). More importantly, tell us what you did to keep focus and maintain exposure. I'm guessing servo and spot exposure, but how did you select the focus point?

Excellent shots as always! Once again didn't get to Duxford this year...maybe next year???

All shot using the Canon 100-400 f4.5/5.6 IS L with IS in mode 2 and handheld.

Servo AF, using the Centre Zone AF points and Evaluative metering with +1 EC.

Shutter speeds of 1/250 for prop planes and 1/1000 for jets.

Plus a lot of panning to keep the planes in the frame :)

Hope that helps.

I wondered why the ball kept getting bigger, then it hit me.

Phil,

Great shots. I am looking forward to your ground shots as well

Great photos, I like the P47. One crashed through a brick wall and the pilot survived in WWII.

Yes, I like the P47 this one has only been flying recently as it had a major rebuild. It looks a tough cookie and they can throw it around a bit in the display. So I can quite believe one crashing through a brick wall and the pilot surviving :)

Beautiful shots, way crisper and cleaner noise-wise than my Oly gear. And panned really well at the lower shutter speeds.

This is the setup I plan to be using next year. It looks shorter than my E3/E510 with the Bigma. But I think the hugely increased quality is worth it. Light cropping here and there is always possible if I feel like it!

If you're curious, I threw a load of my shots into the Oly forum...

Great shots. What I want to know is how you managed to get those static shots without crowds of others getting into the picture; perhaps you got up early or you had special access! Thanks for posting. Jealous John

Duxford hosts the only airshows I've ever been to where you can get airside with the aircraft that will be flying that day, all for the bargain price of £4!

There are a hell of a lot of photographers there, but everyone is really polite for the most part, so all photographers get a fair share of clear space before making way for others.

I've managed to get 15-shot panoramas of entire rows of aircraft, without anyone in the way. Everyone just waits for their turn at the front!

Yep. Screw you guys, I shoot Olympus.....I'm special!!!!

Although I do plan to be using a 7D and 100-400L next year (hence my lurking in the Canon forums!), unless anyone has any better ideas in that price range?
If you don’t want a zoom then the 300mm would be cheaper you can always add an extender, that’s what I’m thinking of doing and selling my 400mm.

I had considered a prime.....but them something like the Vulcan flies past and makes me realise I need to zoom out a bit!

In a perfect world, I'd use two bodies to cover it all, but if the 100-400/7D combo is significantly better than the Oly E3/Bigma setup, I think that's the direction I'll go in.

Did you use OM1's 2's in the film days, they were a really nice camera and quite small for a 35mm.

In all honesty for the reach and flexibility I don't think you can beat the 7D and 100-400L combo. I have found it works very well for me. I got myself a 5D3 shortly after they came out and although it's a stunning camera it does not offer that extra bit of reach. So I am sticking with my 7D for the time being.

Now if the promised 200-400 f4 with built in 1.4x eventually materialises then that on the 5D3 might just work. I will get 1.4x extra reach rather than 1.6, but then the same lens on the 7D would also be very good..... All pipe dreams as I would probably need to sell both kidneys, my liver and an arm and a leg to even think about affording it!

The only thing to bear in mind is next year there may be a 7D Mark II, but then again pigs might fly, so keep your ear to the ground on that one.

I haven't added any of the static display shots yet, they should be up in a day or twos time, although the statics were shot with a 5D3 so not relevant on the 7D forum! :D
