Can anyone suggest a nice camera bag? Messenger type if possible.

Hey guys, I just purchased a GX1 which should arrive in a few days. I already ordered a nice leather case, and wrist strap for it. Only thing I can't find is a nice bag to carry the camera, and maybe 2-3 lenses, along with a few minor things. I prefer a messenger, but not in leather. I'd like to get a nice fabric one if possible.

I did check out the Crumpler bags, but didn't see anything I liked or color combinations they offer. If anyone can lead me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

The Beard

Check out the BBB-E bag, it's made by courierware. My only gripe is that the fabric is a little rough (but durable as hell). Not that big of a deal, but it 'pilled up' a couple of soft cotton shirts. Other than that it is just about perfect for m43.

I'm really fond of the ThinkTank Retrospective 5. It carries my GX1 plus VF, plus a G5, plus 12-35mm zoom, 25 f/1.4, and 45-200mm zoom, as well as filters, remote release, extra memory cards, extra batteries, and filters. It doesn't look much like a camera bag either which is a benefit in urban environments, and it has one of the most comfortable and non-slip straps I have ever used.

sorry to hijack the thread, but can you tell me the manufacturer of the lens pouch in which you store your Panny 20mm as shown in the pic you posted?

Tamrac Aria 3 (comes in 3 colors, brown, black, green). Or Aria 6 if you want something big enough for an iPad too.

I use the F5XB as well. Left divider holds the 7.5mm FE with a vertical divider and the 45mm above it. Middle pouch has the OMD with Milich grip and 25mm (sideways) and in the last divider I have the 25mm lens shade and the 14mm above it. Flash stand below the OMD. ND400, ND8 and CPL and spare memory cards in front of the cushioning material.

Originally the F5XB has 4 little pockets on the front but that was nearly useless. I pulled the stitching out of two of them to end up with 2 pockets on the front. In one is the FL300R with spare batteries, lens cleaning cloth and USB cable. The other has two spare batteries and the included OMD flash.

I also removed the Domke tag from the flap to make it a little more discrete.

Tenba Messenger, Mini or Small. Looks like a traditional messenger, well padded, plenty of pockets, access through the top flap so you do not have to unbuckle if you do not want to.

Rugged, comfortable strap, water resist, very light weight. Has ability to add on to sides if you want. I added a pouch that can carry a 28 oz water bottle. If you want it can carry a laptop. The size of the bag determines the laptop size.

I have a small (not a mini, which you might want to look at) and able to carry a GH1, GF1, 9-18, 20, 14-140, 45 200, large flash. I could add a 14-45 or with no trouble, stacked with another lens...this is all in the main compartment. I have room for charger, extra batteries, cleaning, off camera flash cable, and wireless shutter release. I have room for a laptop, but now it becomes very crowded, especially after you throw in a 90w power adapter. If I had an ultrabook, instead of a 5 lb clunker, I might think about it.

Raymond,

The pouch came with the Lowepro Compact Courier 80 bag and is not available separately. I purchased this little bag, kept the pouch and sold the actual bag. I believe that this pouch comes with both the Compact Courier 70 and 80 bags, and it is the perfect size for storing the 20/1.7. Highly recommended.

I have a LowePro Exchange messenger bag (this one: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/652808-REG/Lowepro_LP36124_0EU_Exchange_Messenger_Bag_Gray.html ), which is a nice light bag for when I'm going to be walking all day. I used to use it for a DSLR and two lenses; for a m4/3 you should be able to fit a three-lens kit, maybe four if one's a pancake, plus incidentals. However, be advised that it has no padding at all.

These days, I prefer a Rothco canvas messenger bag ( http://www.rothco.com/general/index.cfm/Description/Rothco-Heavyweight-Canvas-Classic-Messenger-Bag-Earth-Brown/fuseaction/itemdetail/item/6103/subcat/186/prodid/112/from/left ), along with a camera insert. It's rugged has several roomy side and front pockets, and it can be made to hold just about anything. With the padding in the camera insert and the heavy canvas of the bag , it's a bit safer than the LowePro, and it is totally anonymous.

The Domke F-6 Little bit smaller ballistic bag. Add the two part short compartment accessory. It comes with a 4 section.

The Think Tank Retro 5 is a great bag.

You can go to the Think Tank Retrospective 7 if you have an iPad or Mac laptop (small one).

I have many bags and a growing MFT's kit. Keep in mind any accessories you want to carry like a flash bracket, TTL cord, extra batteries, filters. Buy bigger than you need today and get a second bag for the minimum like body, lens, flash, batteries, filters, cards and the Think Tank Retro 5 will hold the GX-1 with lens attached and Two accessories on each side. All of their Retro bag features are the same so far compartments. The dimensions are different.

The reason the Domke F6 I mentioned is great because its is perfect for a small system. You can transfer the inside of this Domke F6 bag into the Retrospective 7, 10 and even thirty because the height is the same to match those inserts.

You can customize further using the Kata system of customized inserts thats easy to do.

I have had a 5xb for quite a good while and like it but found this Lowepro soft side messenger for a very inexpensive price ($25 range) and it might suffice as well.

I have a Lowepro Event Messenger 150 which allows for more lenses by stacking but its a more 'constructed' bag rather than as soft sided (which I prefer) and its my 'inbetweener' bag with a Tenba Mini Messenger as my travel bag with room for everything I need plus Ipad.

I also use a Rickshaw Ipad bag with a Domke 2 lens insert and it works very well as soft sided messenger bag which doesn't look like a camera bag (and you can choose colors).

I have a F-Stop Shibata from the Millar series
http://fstopgear.com/en/product/millar/shibata
and it's an absolutely wonderful bag.

I have at least other 5 bags of various brands (tamrac, crumpler) but this is my best bag.

1) it's very light at just 500 grams but still well padded and very roomy.
2) the outer fabric is nice, soft to the touch but durable
3) does not look like a camera bag

4) holds an ipad in the front pocket together with accessories (spare cards, batteries, etc)

5) has very practical side pockets (I keep a filter wallet in one and my cellphone in the other) and a big pocket in the main flap.

6) holds an EM-5 with lens with hood in shooting position + 3 or even 4 other lenses and a flash, plus an ipad, accessories, cables, cards, filters, etc.

I've been everywhere with it and I simply love it.

I have both the Think Tank Retro 5 and Domke F5X, both are great, Retro 5 holds more and interior organization is more flexible. Domke is lighter and a lot less expensive.

Semi-hijack here, I've stolen a Leica idea by gluing m4/3 rear caps together to make a stackable cap. M4/3 lenses, expecially primes, are small/short, and most of the bags available are considerably taller. My Retro 5 takes my GH2 or GF3 w/lens in the center slot, and I can easily fit 2 lenses back-to-back in each side slot. The advantage of the stack caps is it keeps each lens separated without the need for an additional divider between them. You have to be a little more cautious when grabbing lenses since you're always grabbing two instead of one, but I haven't dropped anything yet.

Maybe pix later when I'm back home...
