I refuse to believe the A99 will have an ISO hotshoe

How about dual hot shoe? Not enough space to accommodate two hotshoes?
Perhaps better something like the interchangeable viewfinders on cameras like the Minolta XM/XK or the Nikon F3:

Rather than replacing the entire viewfinder, it would just have to be the hotshoe that slid off and on.

True, but you can bet your pants that this is going to be a more unversal change across the A en E mount ranges. Otherwise they would have most likely used either the dedicated NEX flash port or the ilSO one seen on the NEX 7.

Good point...

I hope it's because they consider the NEXes more likely to be used for video than a big SLT will, but it does look like the battle's lost.

Well, that will only mean that I've bought my last SLR and my last NEX - and I won't be getting an SLT. When what I have stops functioning, I'll sell my lenses etc. and get a very small compact, if that.

Damn whoever thought it was cool to put video in an SLR!

P.S.: I'm still hoping that the SLTs will have the iISO hotshoe. There's no sense in going for high quality video if you use an on-board lamp.

if this is a dumb hot shoe with no communication there is still a chance this could be interchangeable. looks like maybe a release button under the thing? Or Sony is going to use something else to communicate with the flashes. maybe bluetooth or something similar?

Now that is a very interesting thought.

... it has a lot of contacts under the front edge, but it's certainly not an AIS or IAS hotshoe, so all possibilities are open.

...I sure hope there is some way to still successfully use/communicate with the current line of flashes. It will significantly add to the cost of kit if I've got to get new lighting if I purchase the a99.

....On the brighter side, if the change means more accessible programming for 3rd parties it will probably be a good thing eventually. Especially if it is taken across the entire software platform on the a99. Would love to be able to use specialty devices like the Gigapan and the Promote Control to their fullest.

Has there been some improvement on the old hot shoe or in
the way flash units clamp on to it?

I remember when the Minolta hot shoe came out --
it was a big improvement because there were fewer missed
shots due to bad contacts between flash and camera.

As I remember, to get a standard flash to make good contact,
one had to screw down a knurled ring on the flash-- which sometimes
broke or got so bound-up it was really hard to remove.
The slip in and click Minolta system was a better idea and still
works well.

Don't forget other rumor. The A99 is supposed to be very well equipped on the video side. Then changing to ISO socket is not a bad idea as users of Canon and Nikon DSLRs will keep using accessories if they switch systems. The new flash will also emit continuous light (via LEDs). I have no doubt that Sony AF system in video will surpass the competition.

For the video side, i am pretty sure that Sony will make a serious dent into the Canon and Nikon niche (semi-pro video).

... and then they ruin it all with that horrible hotshoe?

I said before that it wouldn't make any sense whatsoever for Sony to change the hotshoe unless it was to ISO. Finally!!! Thank you Sony!!!!

I'm sick of having to either buy adapters and remembering to take them then later remembering where I put them.

Going to ISO will mean it's easier to use for accessories and removes a disadvantage for those wondering if to switch from Canon/Nikon.

According to SAR (SR5) the A99 is going to have THE SAME ISO hot shoe of the new NEX-6.
that does not look like it's even the "standard" ISO hot shoe, if there is such a thing. Actually there is not a standard, particularly when it comes to contacts and their assigned functions. Wonder how many "ISO" hot shoes won't fit?

And for others, there is no standard locking mechanism for ISO hot shoes. Usually you have to have a some tools along for when the locking wheels or whatever get stuck. And if you don't tighten them enough to get stuck they will loosen and fall off. And then there are ISO shoes with no locks at all, just a weak spring or less,
