The lock switch on my 5d3 does not appear to work. I have tried several settings in the menu, but the switch has no effect. I feel I must be missing something. Anyone got any ideas?

There are menu settings that control this function, you can find them in the 'orange' menu under multi-function lock. You can pick any one of three settings, and one setting is to turn them all off.

Thanks. I have tried all on, all off and each one individually on, but no joy. I think my switch must be broken. I seem to recall someone else on here had the same problem. Perhaps this is a common fault?

There's multiple ways to disable the AE Lock button.

I would start by testing the function with DOF preview button and see if AE Lock works there then I'd remap the lock function to a different button and test the original button with it's new function. That will give you separate test for the button and the function.

Focus Lock see page 50
  • AE Lock see pages 19 / 98 / 101 / 131 / 161
Depth of Field button AE Lock see page 93
Metering Timer AE Lock see page 111
Checking AE Lock see page 112
Cancel AE Lock see page 124
remapping AE Lock see page 182

I could be wrong but I don't think the OP is talking about the AE lock button, he's talking about the lock slider.

I'm not sure, if he is he'll have to read pg 47 & pg 319 and test to see if the switch is capble of locking any function to understand if he has a bad switch or a learning issue.

Mine works fine. When the appropriate menu options are selected, and the lock switch is pushed to the right, when you twirl the dials an 'L' appears on the LCD and the settings don't change.

im on 1.1.2 as i dont need the language update or whatever it was.
firmware isnt going to fix a switch though.
All these switches are just inputs to the camera's firmware. Unless it's a physical problem with the switch (unlikely, though not impossible) the remaining options are a software bug or user error.

So it's absolutely possible for a firmware update to fix an issue like this. (However, the 1.1.3 release notes don't mention anything about such a change.)

I have two bodies, both are 1.13, both lock switches function properly. Maybe you should try and update.

Oh come on!

if it was firmware then all the lock switches would have been non functional on the cameras release!

Ok. After a bit of playing around I realise the switch is working in liveview but not normal mode. In liveview with the switch in the lock position accessing the selection wheel displays lock on the screen. In normal mode the lock switch has no effect.

I can therefore conclude:

1) the switch is working electrically.

2) there is a software bug or I misunderstand it's operation.

Can someone please confirm the switch does function in non liveview mode on their mk3?

Thanks

T.

mine does not function in normal or live view mode.

My C.Fn2:Disp. Operation is set to lock for all three functions. I've tried all combos.

I think it's a user error on my behalf. It only works in some modes. Try pressing the shutter to focus on something and then turn the wheel with the lock on. This gives a red warning lock on screen.

The lock function does not totally inhibit the wheel function in all modes eg the menu. For some reason I was expecting the lock to block the wheel operation completely.

Mine works fine on two bodies. Not sure about the custom function mentioned and my camera is at home. The settings i used are in the orange menu
