only 1 reason why E-M5 not ready for prime time

I guess the fact that the 3rd party battery doesnt give any kind of warning about low charge in the camera...
This is the real problem. Those like me who have actually used the batteries know that your statement is false, but sadly there are to many people here spreading these urband legends, rather than seeking out the actual facts.

The charger that came with my betteries not only can charger the Olympus ones too, but doesn't have the long silly cord needed to plug it in. This is another plus.

One other thing. The seller I bought my "generic" batteries from has about 500 transactions for the batteries on ebay. There is not a single review/rating that says they caused a problem with the camera. I have used my for over a month and have not had a single issue.

It would be for me too, but some tech oriented guy disassembled the third party batteries With pictures of it all and came to the conclusion that 1) the battery had lower capacity than indicated and thus should last perhaps 75% of the time of Olympus batteries, but also 2) that the third parties batteries had a lower voltage than the Olympus batteries which are made with a new chemicals. Thus the reason you can't charge the third parties batteries in the Olympus charger is that they show a lower voltage, not a higher one. (Don't ask me for a link, I don't remember it where I read it.)

Well, if I had not received the original batteries, I'd take the third parties batteries as spare batteries in the between time.

That said I'm not only waiting for the batteries, but aso for the E-M5 with kit lens (cancelled the previous order of the 5th March by Microspot after it was delayed three times, the last time without known delivery date; I have now ordered from another dealer while they had a special 10% rabate on all Olympus products, the E-M5 included; the difference will almost finance the grip). I have already got the grip, the eyecup and the Bestbatt battery, but I'm still waiting for the Olympus battery and the kit; It is supposed to arrive around mid July. I have been waiting for so long that my impatience has diminished.
I think the issue for many is that this is a new battery that has not been used in other cameras. The batteries won't charge properly in the Oly charger. There are voltage differences. I don't claim to be any sort of expert on batteries but until it is all sorted out I know I'm only using Oly batteries.

Others obviously have made different choices.

I do use generics in some of my cameras but there haven't been any red flags with those. And to me the inability to charge the battery in the Oly charger is a red flag.
Hi Thomas

So other than the issue with batteries you like the E-M5 and would use it for pro work. Not bad I guess?

Have Olympus changed something with the E-M5. I've been using 3rd party batteries on other gear for a while. Sure the results are variable i.e out of 7 batteries I have purchased 2 of them rubbish (both from same supplier). I complained to the seller but it only cost me £18 so I didnt waste my time on it just gave him a bad vote on ebay.

I feel a little naked only have one power source for my camera!

I bought the 3 DSTE batteries for $39. Not a single issue and I like their charger better. The indicator works perfectly and they charge in decent amount of time.

When the indicator does get to the red bar, I can still take at least 50 pics too (maybe a lot more). That depends more on the amount of time the camera is turned on.
Clearly my experience with the DSTE batteries is a bit limited, but, the first usage with one was very good . . at least as good as the OLY battery. The OLY battery does charge in the DSTE charger. AND, the E-M5 DOES recognize the DSTE battery with its' icon.

Also, the DSTE set is not very expensive.

What happens is now people will think the DSTE batteries only last as long as 75% of the Olympus ones and from other posts, the indicator lights won't work. Next they will you about their cousin who was stuck in an elevator with Lionel Ritchie's dogs...

I found the DSTE batteries and the Olympus ones to be very similar in how long the last. Honestly, I haven't noticed a difference.

Let's see actual users report.

How do you know that the charger you are using for your Oly battery is charging it correctly and fully and is not doing any harm to that battery?
. . . He of course doesn't know anything at all about that. My take on all of this that when you spend $1000 for a camera, it doesn't make too much sense to try to save $30 on a clone third party battery unless you're in a bind and have to buy something no matter what. I was able to get my 2nd battery from Olympus but I also sympathize with those who haven't been able to get one. Hopefully, Olympus will solve this problem sooner rather than later.

Yeah and probably why now he has ignored this post. :)

Do you have a link to these 3rd party battery suppliers as I only have the original battery and would like a couple more. I'm in the UK so make / model would also be good.

Thanks

Without putting words in the OP's mouth, I took away that he liked the camera but until his battery situation was solved, the OMD was not ready for critical professional use.

Many people on this thread have drifted and forget the original point.

I would totally love to hear the story about being stuck in an elevator with Lionel Ritchie's dogs. What kid of dogs are they?

Hi! How do they hold a charge compared to the OEM? Also, does the charger also charge the OEM battery?
For the DTSE batteries I got, capacity is close enough that I don't notice the difference. From the tear down someone did, they should have about 80% of the capacity of the Olympus original BLN-1 battery.

The charger will charge the OEM battery.

Many things dealing with Olympus and their OM and Pen cameras, plus my general photography and musings http://omexperience.wordpress.com/

I'm in the UK.

I've just ordered a set of two with charger and delivery for £27 from the digital media store who look a reputable company.
If you google BLN-1 battery you wll find similar offers.

Be aware that despite what some sites say none of the third party batteries will charge in the Olympus charger but nobody has reported any real problems with the third party ones.

There was a thread on here that suggested that they held slightly less charge than the Olympus battery, not the higher rating that they advertise, but not significantly less.

I got 3 batts, 2 chargers and the car adaptor yesterday. All batts charged up, and will check the charge. Nice to have a charger for the car...

If the OP is taking 5,000+ shots at wedding then he/she "is not ready for critical professional work" (I'm hoping there wasn't a 2nd/assistant wedding photographer there who also took a similar amount of photos... OMG) with his 5 batteries...

Make sure the battery is FULLY charged, that should help. I put mine on the charger overnight. I shot around 400 photos for a wedding reception with no problem last weekend on one battery. Still showed 1/2 full then.

I ordered one of the 3-battery, aftermarket kits from Ebay. Showed up this week, all batteries work fine in the EM5 and the HLD6 Grlip. They don't last as long, but are great spares when the OEM battery gives up. They'll be permanent backups when my BLN-1 comes.....if ever!

Ever shoot a wedding for pay? The third party batteries have no indication of battery life. I have two. You can't use that for work. I need some indication that the camera I am trusting for a once-in-a-lifetime event isn't going to run out in the middle of something essential. You can't say to the minister, "oh wait, my battery unexpectedly ran out. Can you give me a second to change batteries."
Have you checked the settings in the K menu? There is an option "Warning Level" where you can chose at which battery level the warning should show.

An easy way to extend battery live on a shoot is to enforce the 'no chimping' rule.....

though probably not tomorrow.

This is not the result of a bad design.

Nor is it a problem with the batteries.

It is the result of unprecedented demand, which bodes well for the future of M43 in general. The demand turned out to be far stronger than originally forseen, and the high demand in the face of uncertain global economic conditions is an extremely positive sign.

Only this forum could take a positive and make it sound as negative as possible.
